So basically, Apple and Samsung had been collaborating all along. Samsung’s foldable was a proof of concept. Now, if Apple moves forward with its own device, Samsung can focus on its core business — making high-quality displays for Apple.

I really don't get how you can protect your IP when a competitor is also your manufacturer / part supplier like in this case. How can Apple retain that screen tech for itself and not have Samsung put it in their next Z Fold immediately after?
This is what patents are for. And they work. It’s why Apple Watch blood oxygen sensors are deactivated-they used another company’s patented technology and got sued. If Samsung copies it, the same thing will happen.

If they do release this then it’ll be in 2027 for the 20th anniversary of iPhone.

It’ll still be a pass for me.

IF however they release an iPhone Classic with home button or the same size and style of the iPhone 4 then I’ll gladly pay a premium for that.

"nearly invisible" probably in Apple promo videos. In the meanwhile in the real world...you are holding it in the wrong lighting conditions.

Because Apple is developing this tech and are the inventors of this.

Samsung here is a supplier not a brand.
Ummmm, No! 🤔

Very first sentence of above article...

"Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone will feature a new type of display panel developed by Samsung that has never been used in a foldable product, claims a source with links to Apple's supply chain."

Honest question: Can someone explain why this gets Trademarked to Apple and not Samsung?
Not trademarked to Apple. SOLD to Apple.

Because Apple is developing this tech and are the inventors of this.

Samsung here is a supplier not a brand.
There’s nothing to indicate Apple developed this tech or invented it.

No. That’s not what’s happening. Samsung is a manufacturer and supplier to Apple of the panel. Samsung’s cell phone group isn’t permitted to use this panel. At least, not now or not soon.

There’s a lot of incorrect language used to describe what’s happening with this panel.

Apple likely has an exclusive contract to purchase this panel for one or more years. That’s why they will be the only one’s using it.

Apple didn’t invent it. They didn’t develop it. Samsung did, most likely at Apple’s request per a contract.

Apple possibly paid Samsung to develop this and assumed the burden should it fail. That’s what developers do when funded by outside organizations.

This is what happens when one wants better tech than what the industry builds. They pay someone to work on it. They reap the benefits of having paid for it through contracts.

I’m beginning to become interested in this product if it is as great as claimed. Not for a phone, but an iPad.

If this gets me an iPhone and an iPad mini in my pocket at the same time, I'm in.
I just hope the device & inner screen uses iPadOS (with its multitasking abilities) rather than just iOS.

I have to agree. I don't really see much benefit, unless you consume a lot of media, to ios on that size display. It needs to be able to run ipadOS. If that was the case, they could definitely push the price limits.

Will be interested to see this rumored ipadOS update.

Money

Samsung could very well have a contract where Apple paid some of the development costs in return for exclusivity for some period of time. Apple could also own the patent rights, depending on the contract terms.

With five years of experience using various foldable phones under my belt, I believe their widespread adoption is inevitable, particularly with Apple's impending entry into the market. I anticipate the familiar narrative of initial skepticism followed by enthusiastic demand once the announcement is made. It's a pattern we see repeatedly. As for me, I'm sold on foldables and won't be returning to a conventional smartphone.

I suspect a bifurcation of the market - some people will just want a phone and others what is essentially an iPad mini as well as a phone. Cost will be a big driver of adoption.

If this gets me an iPhone and an iPad mini in my pocket at the same time, I'm in.

While I get the appeal, it is potentially a UI nightmare, with some things working one way on iOS and another on iPadOS; and some features exclusive to one OS, with users frustrated they 'can't do X on yOS'

What? Samsung makes phones and will continue to do so. They also make fridges, TVs, washing machines, chips and lots of other stuff. They are an OEM manufacturer and one of the best/ biggest in the world. Their core business is not just to make displays for Apple!

I was told to "just wait and see" with Vision Pro, because surely Apple would not bother entering the space unless they had a truly unique and game-changing vision for the product. Surely Apple had something up their sleeve that we couldn't see, and it wouldn't just be a bulky headset that runs iPad apps. Turns out, it was a bulky headset that runs iPad apps.

I'm not convinced that Apple's watch and wait stance with foldables will result in them coming in and disrupting the market with the first "true" foldable that isn't a gimmick. Theirs will be a gimmick too, because Apple is not run by product people anymore.

Yeah, I'm sure Sammy is going to give Apple their best foldable display. Good one!
Why wouldn’t they if Apple provides them higher margins. Also, iPhones have a higher global market share than Samsung smartphones, so more panel sales for Samsung Display.

In a price-sensitive market, how many will buy a $2k phone?
There are close to 60 million millionaires in the world. That’s about a quarter of yearly iPhone unit sales. There are enough affluent potential buyers.

Of course, one might argue that they didn’t become millionaires by buying expensive smartphones.

I just don't see Samsung wanting to lower their global sales of foldables by giving Apple their best foldable display tech. But, cash is king, there's no doubt about that.
