Apple's foldable iPhone is expected to arrive in September against a rival already outrunning its own forecasts.

ETNews reports Samsung is building an extra one million Galaxy Z Fold 8 units, after the 4:3 device took 70 percent of a record 1.44 million Galaxy Z8 series pre-orders. Apple's foldable display – made by Samsung – is rumored to use the same aspect ratio in the same book-style form factor.

That's not a Galaxy Z Fold 8 in the photo of the story?

EDIT: I see it's a photo of the Ultra version. But the new iPhone will have the form factor of the regular "Z Fold 8." Which one is Samsung producing more of?

In 2026, I think the amount of people who move between Android and iOS is fairly minimal. If you wanted a folding phone, I would have thougth you would go to Android a few years ago already. Is this really a big competition for Apple?
There is competition. If you're an Android user and was curious about Apple's foldable, you now basically have one in your ecosystem. For the people that were thinking of switching, probably not now. That's competition. And maybe it will make Apple wake the F*ck up.

Apple HAVE to get the price right. get it started at £1999 and they will be onto a winner.

hat's the key. The Z8 fold looks like it is about$800 more than the iPhone Pro, so it will be interesting to see where the iPhone foldable lands on the price spectrum.

"Slow" may better reflect "methodical" and "rigorous" than complacency.

Apple rarely is first to market, they are very good, however, at seeing things in the market and coming up with an innovated twist on that. The iPhone, iPad, and iPod for example were not new ideas, just much better implementations of existing products.

I highly doubt there is any noticeable amount of people that want a foldable, but only in the exact slightly different aspect ratio that the new Samsung and Apple foldables have. Sure the new form may be more popular than the old one, but popular enough to change ecosystems? Doubtful. People that wanted an Android foldable would most certainly stay with Samsung's old design if Samsung hadn't offered an alternative form. People that wanted an iOS foldable would have switched to iPhone Ultra. People are entrenched these days and even for those who are not entrenched, the slightly different aspect ratio is such a niche thing, it would be at the bottom of their priorities.

Samsung would go never released a bookstore fold if there weren’t any rumors of Apple doing it. Samsung is so pathetic.

This is great news for Apple. That means people love this form factor…. Unless they do something stupid like price their fold astronomically greedy, they’ll sell a ton of them…. If they’re smart they will price it only $100 more than Samsungs and keep it under $2000

I was in best buy to check the fold 8, as preview of the iphone ultra. I must say I do like the square ish design. and Drankly if the iphone air ever shrinks and copy's the external display of the iphone ultra, I would love it. I like two finder typing on the devise, and I love the shorter length. I can imagine it would be really nice in my pocket. I would welcome that come on apple. Iphone Air 3 (redux).

I would take it as good news for Apple. If the appetite is growing amongst Android users, then iPhone owners might be interested when Apple shows off their version.

What type of protective cases are availalble for these devices? I drop my iPhone couple of times a month and would hate to to drop $2000 device without protection.

The amount of crease visible on the Apple iPhone foldable compared to the Samsung will show you how far Apple needs to go to catch up. Something to consider in that 14 day return period unless you are an Apple diehard ecosystem citizen.
