The idea is I don't want a single penny of mine going toward any google products or services, either directly or indirectly. My understanding was all iCloud data was stored on Apple hosted infrastructure. If it is in fact stored on Google infrastructure, I find that deeply disturbing.
Sell your iPhone. Do it

That's it?

Now I'm getting more skeptical about "what else is in it for Google"?
I concur!

AI’s potential is creepy enough, but then you factor in the big G.

Wonder if a few years from now or some other random timeline, a news item will surface “Privacy Breach…”

I want to believe... 🛸
I also want to believe… however

After years of being fully invested in the Apple ecosystem with a full complement of their products, I’m shocked that they would go all-in with Google.

In order to move forward with confidence in Apple, that requires trust.

After misleading promotions like a full year of “iPhone 16 built for Apple Intelligence” and other not so wonderful experiences, the trust has faded.

Now with healthy skepticism at the forefront, Apple is no better than any other suspicious company.

So 1 billion per year for 5 years =5 billion.

So….Apple’s in-house LLM won’t be ready until 2031.

Got it. Thanks for the heads up Apple.

You do know that the new head of Apple Intellgence is the guy who created Google’s Gemini ?

Coincidence…..?

Yes I am aware, as I’ve been following the entire push for AI across the tech landscape.

In regards to the topic here, it’s just one more reason to exercise healthy skepticism across the board. It’s becoming apparent that the relationship between these two giants is growing in its complexity at a very frenetic pace.

Would cost for Apple 5 Trillion to make it.
Some companies are just not good at certain things, it’s best to admit it and look externally for solutions and learn lessons for internal benefits.

I can relate to people complaining about the decision to work with Google on A.I. However, I trust that Apple will put safeguards in place to protect our privacy. If they don’t, Apple loses the high ground on privacy in a spectacular way.

You’re worrying about nothing.

Imagine you rent a safety deposit box at the bank. 25 of your family/friends take a bunch of pictures and use AES-256 to encrypt them before storing them on a single disc. You take this disc and put it in the safety deposit box.

Even if someone at the bank opened your box and took out the CD, how will they ever determine what’s on the disc or who it belongs to? All they know is you (Apple) put something in the box.

This is basically how Apple handles cloud storage from third party providers.

Do I trust Google? No
Do I have a Gemini pro subscription? Yes

If Apple can pull off Ai to that is 90% as good as Gemini/open Ai, but has actual privacy, they will be successful. And I think that is what they are trying to accomplish - even trying to do some processing in the device it self for light stuff.

I hope this bubble bursts and I hope it does it soon. The average person misuses AI and there is no training for them to use it properly. We’re just going to get lazier and lazier as a collective and more and more misinformation is going to spread more rapidly. I use it sparingly from time to time to give me a starting point on something, but I also only ask it what I already have familiarity with so that I can actually verify what it spits out. A lot of people don’t do that and take it at face value.

Originally I thought it was a bubble, however now after attending CES 2026 it’s apparent AI will continue on for some time.

Well said!

Keep seeing people link the "two deals" (search engine and AI model) but I feel like it's such a bad take.

I mean, sure, they are both 2 big billion dollar deals. But the similarities stop there.

One deal is Apple purchasing a product - actual legitimate R&D and IP: an AI model.
The other deal is just Apple locking in users by using software restrictions. In such case, Google didn't buy any IP. It's just a dodgy deal between 2 monopolies to entretch each other's market control.

Comparing both deals is insane. One of them should be illegal. Apple shouldn't be exploiting monopoly control, and Google shouldn't be bribing them to do so.

Glad we can still opt out on iPhone and computer but don’t know for how long.

It would cost Apple more than $5 Billion to make Siri capable, this is the most financially sound decision.

I'd guess and say that apple have already spent a lot more than 5 billion on apple intelligence just to get to where they are today. They would think that this is to buy them time for them to develop something good enough in house.

Sadly for apple, this isn't like designing an inhouse modem or a maps app; these things continue to grow; and while i have no doubt that siri will one day be as good as gemini or chatgpt is *today*, by the time that happens, the current AIs will be so much further ahead that siri will look last century.

These things grow better as they get used more, and learn more; the rate at which they grow will speed up; siri is already years behind and cannot catch up by growing slower than the others.
