I wonder if this person went to work for Oura because they're excited about Smart Rings or because they got offered a crapload of money. I'm guessing the money.

Consumer tech is in a massive rut right now and it seems the hype gets stronger as the product offerings worsen.

I was hoping something like this would be the other way around. A great category for Apple to get into would be fitness bands and rings. A lot of us don't like the Apple Watch and want to wear our actual watches. A fitness band on the other wrist would be great -- especially one that doesn't interfere with workout equipment. I like Apple's fitness tracking. It seems they're really missing out by only focusing on the watch...

Why? This ain’t the Apple of old,..just look at how many staff have fled in the past 12 months.

Tim appears to be happy mandating work from the office, yet has no issues in continually gallivanting around the world on the company dime,..living his best life from F1 to Alecia Keyes.. 👌
If it was the Apple of old, it wouldn't be as successful. Bigger companies, even one as cool as Apple, can grind you down...

Although not at a promotional level, he’s now a big fish in a small pond...

Why is Tim the subject of your rant?
Apple employs approximately 170,000 employees globally, while Oura, in contrast, is less than 1,000. Given Apple’s volume it is normal for executives to often shuffle within the company or leave and new ones get hired.

From the outside, leaving before a major new product launch seems odd, but then no doubt healthy salary offer from Oura would be enticing enough after the Apple Intelligence fiasco...

I don't know about that.

upheaval | ˌəpˈhēv(ə)l | noun a violent or sudden change or disruption to something

If you take the definition at face value, I think the head of home hardware leaving Apple is a violent or sudden change or disruption to their home products.

Their home products, which account for so little of Apple's business I'd be surprised if Tim even knew this guy's name 😂

RE: Smart home stuff

I'd love to see Apple get into the smart home game. Not just with a "HomePad" or whatever... but all the accessories.

It's amazing how dozens of little companies can sell home products like door locks, light bulbs, and smart plugs... but trillion dollar Apple can't...
Agreed - except for locks: a one minute YT video from the lock-picking-lawyer and Apple would be all over the news for selling insecure locks.

Unfair, because pretty much all locks are insecure, but, well, it's Apple...

That’s my point 🙄🤦‍♂️,..he’s making the best move of his life.

Tim might think he’s the star of the show,..but it won’t be long till he’s collecting social security and relegated to just another board member. Apple are so far due for a change of CEO it’s not funny.

Nearly 4 months into the year and all we have seen from Timothy is 1 actual new product and incremental updates on all others. Enough said.

So, this guy is pulling the ropes, like Brother Dawn in disguise !?

I’d love an oura ring.

I wonder if they’re going to do a smartwatch? Or a watch like withings does ie a traditional looking smartwatch.

Or perhaps - again like withings - a smart scale.

They have the sensor tech & the design chops.

Maybe they're rightfully frustrated but I wouldn't being going to Oura right now, myself...
I love my Oura ring! Honestly been a game changer for my sleep and health. The UX and insights are so on point.

That said are you referring to the PR DoD kerfuffle from last year? Iirc the broader claims (about sharing data) were largely debunked (check snopes)

There is a lot of bureaucracy in a large company. You can’t even do step left or right without 20 approval. From my point of you he wants more freedom and space to work with

So is this:
1) He’s been blocked from really doing much this whole time and he’s leaving?
Or
2) All they have to show for home stuff is a lagging ecosystem and HomePods and appleTV, which are both lagging behind the competition?

Combine all of this with Apple’s clear inability to test their software before release and their AI woes doesn’t make me as confident in the Apple ecosystem as I might have been 10 years ago.

Apple might be at the point that they’re trying to do too much

IKEA now does too and they have agressivelly low pricing for an impressive quality. Also, in what I’d call a Cupertinoesque move, they don’t require third party app. All you need is the Home app already available on your iPhone, through which they also deploy firmware updates.

What do you do when you've reached as high as you are going to reach at Apple, but you still have ambition? You leave. It has nothing to do with Apple being a bad place to work. It has everything to do with there being no room for you at the top.

Im Not sad is this means home app and HomeKit gets better. It’s slow, laggy, feels like the people who make it don’t also use it.

One can hope. I agree wholeheartedly with the "feels like the people who make it don’t also use it".

I love HomeKit and find the app to be, well... ok. But, it could be so much better. Some of the design choices just don't make sense... like how a power strip or a humidifier are represented in the app. For example, when the components are combined it's a pain to get to each individual piece, but separating them all out is disjointed as they're not always placed together (in the case of a humidifier).
