Apple is set to reorganize its health and fitness divisions under its Services group, according to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The move comes as longtime chief operating officer Jeff Williams prepares to depart at the end of this year.

Services chief Eddy Cue will reportedly gain oversight of Apple's health and fitness teams, with the groups being consolidated under health lead Sumbul Desai. Meanwhile, Fitness+ head Jay Blahnik will report to Desai in the new structure. Both teams had previously reported to Williams.

Gurman suggests the reorganization is being timed with Apple's plans to launch a new Health+ subscription service, which he first reported on in March. The offering is said to feature an AI assistant providing personalized recommendations on nutrition, exercise, and sleep. Apple plans to launch the new service next year.

Elsewhere, Gurman reports that Craig Federighi will add watchOS to his software oversight, while hardware chief John Ternus – tipped to eventually succeed Tim Cook in the CEO role – will assume sole control of Apple Watch hardware engineering.

Cue already manages Apple's streaming services, iCloud, Maps, and other digital offerings, and placing health and fitness under his Services umbrella suggests Apple wants to transform its wellness initiatives into a more significant revenue stream.

Williams has been transferring his responsibilities since announcing his retirement in July, with supply chain and operations duties moving to new operating chief Sabih Khan.

Of course.

Subscription service and AI.
Apple 2025.

Cue gets a lot of crap for seeming like a moron during those post-Jobs Apple keynotes, but if you read some of Gurman’s reporting, the guy is actually much bolder on Apple’s direction. He’s been reported to have wanted Apple to acquire Tesla and Netflix years ago and has pushed hard for Apple to buy more AI companies. Not sure how that’s going to translate to health and wellness, but Apple should at minimum expand its wearables to include a ring (Oura acquisition?) and a premium fitness tracker with a smaller footprint that people can wear with fancier watches and jewelry. This is a category Apple can completely own top to bottom with a more encompassing product portfolio.

This sounds very promising yes of course as a business extension but also helping keep people healthier(basically a win/win). Your iPhone/watch is with you 24/7 so it’s a perfect mechanism to keeping tabs on your vitals etc. the more I think about this the more I think this will be a game changer. Good luck Apple.

If it involves Apple and AI, it's no "game changer". They have not shown any indication they can make AI work, other than letting the phone link up with ChatGPT, just a lot of promises and "coming soon".

Why - if someone retires - is there a need to transfer job responsibilities ?? Would not someone with necessary skill simply take over the retiree's role and keep the same responsibilities ?? Not that I care unless the retiree is Johny S. TIA, NSC

With his new reports, I expect Cue to soon have a washboard stomach like hairforce one!

(And I could do with their help too)

There are allot of services Apple could offer under the Apple+ umbrella to make it more attractive than just cloud storage, streaming media, games. Maybe they’ll buy AllTrails or TrailForks and expand those subscription services to more people.

AI across the board once they figure out how to create anonymity and privacy so clients can feel at ease exposing all of their personal data to the AI systems.

They just need to make their core services better. For fitness I would like them to buy an app like Keelo and add more hardcore fitness workouts. For gaming they need to buy a studio and work on bringing metal 4 integrating games to all platforms. For music buy pandora in order to make better playlists. For tv there have been talks to start there own distribution company.
