Too many clever words on that sign when a simple arrow would've sufficed (especially considering the number of non-English-speaking tourists that must visit that iconic store)

An arrow would've been more confusing, unless they put big Apple signs around the FAO building.

Hey Apple, how about signs near the World Trade area. That store has to be the hardest Apple store to find ever.

Love the written word on that first line.

"We're still here. Just over there."

Perfect. [hand clap emoji]

Great point. Isn't this supposed to be an "iconic" store?
Made me smile! I hadn't picked up on that. :D

But yes, two "icons" would do:

Perfect example for anyone new to Macrumors as far as what to expect in the forums. People will criticize Apple over the most ridiculous things and rarely is anyone happy.
Could this be a perfect example of how these forums have lost any sense of humour?

Pathetic, isn't it? I like to get into a debate and discussion as many others on here, but the volatile hate that people spread on this site is absolutely overwhelming towards Apple. I don't agree with everything how Apple regulates, conducts or handles certain situations, but I certainly don't come on here and Vehemently rip every possible negative comment against Apple. Most of those who do that, have nothing to contribute to the actual article or topic of discussion. It amazes me how technology can seriously devastate somebody's personal life where they are so bitter and angry at them selves or Apple for inconveniencing them.

"Volatile hate", "Vehemently rip", "devastate"? Wow.

Overreaction isn't pretty either, just FYI.

FAO Schwarz vacated its location in the General Motors Building in July 2015 due to the rising cost of rent. The space is just a couple feet away from the iconic glass cube, making the relocation largely seamless for frequent customers of the Fifth Avenue store.

Article Link: Apple's Iconic Fifth Avenue Store Moving to Temporary Location on January 20 During Renovations

It's news to me (and very upsetting) that FAO Schwarz had to close up shop.

That store is just as iconic as the Apple Store if taken in historic context. Zeitgeist may be Apple at the moment (or at least in more recent history), but FAO Schwarz defnitely has a strong historical legacy for NYC. I went there once or twice as a kid and, of course, it was featured in "Big" with Tom Hanks.

:(...

Yep, I think this is the tone of an overreaction.

The sign also amused me as a classic example of style over utility. Clever words, nice typography, but secondary consideration given to the user, who just needs straight info. Hey, just like iOS7 and up. An amusing parallel, that's all. Don't take it so seriously.

I know Wall Street and the myriad Apple-haterz continue to claim Apple is going out of business quite soon but these sort of things Apple is doing isn't quite indicative of a company going out of business. A company wouldn't keep renovating old stores and adding new stores at this rate. You can tell how Sears, J.C. Penney and Macys are having a financial crisis as they sell off stores and dump employees. Where is that happening at Apple. It's true I don't really know if Apple is having a financial crisis but spending more money on expansion wouldn't make any sense if they did have a crisis. So what is it that Wall Street knows that I don't? Of course, I also don't understand why Yahoo's share price continues to rise while the company's fundamentals are quite crappy. Yahoo has an EPS of -5.1 and yet the stock has risen over 25% this past year. Apple has an EPS of about 8.3 and the stock has risen just 3% in 2016. I just don't get it. There are so many mixed signals with Apple so it's hard to tell who's telling the truth about the company. If Apple were in financial trouble they shouldn't be doing any renovations or expansion.

What on gods green earth are you talking about lol. Financial Crisis?!?!? They are the healthiest company in the world. The reason I believe the stock isn't souring to new heights every week is because the "stock explosion" of apple has already happened. Sure they are racking in major amounts of cash and expanding but if you look at facebook, amazon, or google you'd see their growth pattern y/y is double digits. Apple has slowed to single digits and last year posted their first y/y decline. This is no cause for concern to be honest. Apple is growing in services and exploring new tech (billion $ investments in tech companies)
The worst thing you can do is trust the "analysts" on wall street. If you're an apple shareholder like me do your do diligence and you'll sleep much better at night knowing that apple is not standing still and they are extremely business savvy and smart. BUY AND HOLD

View it in the proper context though, I guarantee there will be at least 1-3 smiling Apple employees standing by the sign 24/7 to do the actual direction of traffic. It will not stand on its own.

I'm sure people will figure it out no matter what language they speak. Anyone who has traveled has faced language issues. It's understood even as you make travel plans.

Sweet prank, dude. Sending non-English speakers across the plaza in freezing weather 2 weeks early just so they then have to walk all the way back.

Should Apple set up a web cam so we can laugh at them until the 20th? Why am I asking? Of course that's the perfect way to top off your plan.

Apple wastes a lot of money in these remodels of perfectly fine stores.

No, that isn't how retail works, especially flagship locations. It's not like renovating a house. Retail stores have to constantly be updated to accommodate crowd traffic changes, to fit new product lines, and most importantly to remain fresh. I am sure Apple does not make these updates willy nilly. There are companies who specialize in updating stores to increase per sq ft revenue. The amount of $ Apple spends renovating is peanuts to the revenue it later generates, both at and away from the the store and customer evangelizing.

Good point. Directional signage isn't needed until the 20th. I guess this sign is just a heads-up then? That's good, and considerate, but I still think it's too wordy and contradictory:
  • How can you be both here and not here?
  • How can you be "over there" already (as the first line claims) when it isn't January 20th yet?

Again, all fine and good for English speakers who can cut through the logical knots and smile wryly at the playful wording, but confusing for tourists.

And since you raised it, I have absolutely no desire for your webcam idea. Who do you think I am? Mr Burns? :)

They better hurry! I'll be in New York in March and last time (and my only time) that I have been to NYC (2008) I couldn't actually get to the Store even though I very much tried to... Oh those were the times of young me trying to find the damn thing in a short time during a parade where crossing the street to look around on the other side took 20 or more minutes.

I'll make it this time after only having it seen from the outside.

I don't anticipate to only - if even - witness their restructured concept and not the mostly original concept.

Damn it.

I hear the store near World Trade is beautiful. Perhaps if you're down there you can see that one? I would definitely avoid the 14th, Grand Central Terminal, 68th and 74th street stores - not configured for insane crowds and honestly not much to look at.

Does this store make profits?

I'm sure the rent at that location is pretty high, but having that location itself is worth it for advertising sake.

But advertising aside, does it make profits?
It wouldn't be there if it didn't. It certainly wouldn't be renovated if it weren't generating a LOT of profits!

They probably cover the rent dozens of times over, conservatively.
[doublepost=1483713525][/doublepost]Wow. A lot of snark here.

And for those asking, for the scale of renovations necessitating a move to another location, I'd estimate 3-6 months of work. Sorry for those visiting from out of town. Personally, aside from the cube, I find this store relatively uninteresting (its located in the former GM executive garage under the plaza in front of the GM Bldg). The stores in Soho, Lincoln Center and in the Octagon (Trade Center) have much more visual appeal).

Ive and Angela Ahrendts are doing some stunningly amazing work with the new stores. Much nicer than the stainless and glass designs ever were considered. The marble, the stone, the colours, the circular leather seat pod planters with trees in them, the hidden technology for opening all kinds of things, the green walls, the open atmosphere, the minimalism, the lack of gaudiness, the elegant large display at the rear. I love it. I honestly think this is very important design work and believe it will influence our world physically and emotionally in the coming decades thanks to Apple upping the bar.

The location is described perfectly well.

Ya'damn right.

Well, it's always nice to make the judgement yourself though isn't it?

You regret what you didn't do more than what you did do.

I still want to see them, but most importantly the 5th Ave one.

Sure I can go to others [too] and probably will if I have enough time, but the 5th Ave one is THE most iconic one of them all.

It's not like I'll go there for shopping, so crowds (something I really don't mind usually anyways, I'm mostly indifferent to crowds) won't be a problem either.

Thanks for the hints though, at least I'll know to expect crowds at some stores more than for others. :)

True. All of them are busy, but 5th is particularly crazy unless you go very early in the morning. Hopefully our incoming President's ridiculous security a few blocks south of the 5th Avenue store will not hinder you either.

Grand Central is just built into an upper level staircase (GC itself is very beautiful so that's worth seeing if you like architecture). Since you're not going for shopping you'll be fine in not dealing with the unhelpful staff at 14, GC, 68th and 74th.

Not sure where the World Trade store is located, but I think you have to pass through the lovely new subway station there (the Occulus).

Good luck and have fun. I might be cranky about Apple, but not to folks visiting. :p Enjoy your stay!

I know its Apple's iconic store but I find the that the store in Grand Central Station is more impressive

Agreed: The Grand Central location is beautiful and a far better experience. I would go so far as to say that the Fifth Ave. cube store is my least favorite of Apple's Manhattan locations for actual shopping.

Thank you. For two reasons:

1.) For actually taking the time to read my
Post and not skim over it, without adding some snark Apple Anti-retort-comment.

2.) For proving my point that you are one of the many posters, short sighting exactly what I was indicating upon that either understands the trolling this website suffers heavily on or or the one who can participate in a substantial debate without back handed derogatory insults. The lack of understanding beyond the surface of what occurs on this site every day baffles me.

I'm nothing more than an Apple enthusiast. And again, I don't support everything Apple does and many reasons I feel they are a great company, but I don't come on here and viciously attack other forum members or Apple for that matter because how bitter someone is. And I'm not saying that's what you're doing here. I'm just indicating the factual points that occur frequently on this site every day. And if you fail to understand that or argue that point, then you truly don't have an understanding or read deeply enough into these comments to fully grasp of what I was talking about.

So I'm gonna go ahead and Assume my first post that you commented on, went straight over your head. I'm over willing to look that and Move on.

Back on topic: Apple always uses clever words for signage or marketing. They always try to be different, which we all know they do fairly well. But I didn't read too deeply into the sign, it is what it is. It's just a renovation and nothing more.

Yep! You pass through the subway station & the store is on the top level. That store is pretty nice.

Your definition of humor isn't necessarily shared or valued in the same respects as you see fit on this website. It's more subjective than having evidential nature how others interpret posts on here.

Speaking of which, choosing or indicating words listed from my previous post doesn't constitute over reacting. I could have used more mundane terms expressing the same values prior on that post, which you would have still posted "Over reaction isn't pretty either." So in theory, my post still stands without your snide remark.
