Apple's iMessage will avoid regulation requiring interoperability with other messaging platforms under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), following the conclusion of an investigation by the regulator (via Bloomberg).

General-Apps-Messages.jpg

The probe concluded that the iMessage platform and Microsoft's Bing do not hold a dominant enough position to be brought under the DMA's strict rules for services provided by big tech's so-called digital "gatekeepers," which include Apple, Meta, Google, Amazon, and TikTok, according to the EU.

Apple and Microsoft said they welcomed the decision to not designate them as core platform services in separate statements following the announcement.

The EU has been working on legislation under the DMA that would have required Apple to make changes to iMessage to make it available on other platforms. The interoperability rules would have meant that Meta apps like WhatsApp or Messenger could request to interoperate with Apple's iMessage framework, and Apple would have been forced to comply within the EU.

However, the EU probe found that iMessage falls outside the legislation because it is not widely used by businesses. The reprieve for Apple is part of a five-month market investigation by the European Commission.

Despite the investigation's conclusion into iMessage, the DMA is still forcing Apple to make major changes to its app ecosystem in the European Union. For example, in iOS 17.4, due later next month, Apple is implementing updates that will allow iPhone and iPad users to download and install apps outside of the App Store through alternative app marketplaces.

That's very disappointing to hear, but honestly not that surprising, iMessage has never gotten a very large userbase in Europe, probably because it doesn't interoperate with Android.

What's funny is that Apple would be doing itself a favour if it did launch an Android app, a place where they could show Android users how great Apple services and software can be. However, that would also probably push it over the line into Gatekeeper territory... 😂

I hope that i can just use iMessage and RCS in the future and remove WhatsApp from my iPhone. Right now I HAVE to use WhatsApp because that's what almost everyone uses here in the EU.
That's another interesting approach, Apple could themselves benefit from the interoperability requirements of the DMA here, by requesting and implementing interoperability with WhatsApp.

I doubt that would happen, but that would be so nice!

It's Discord I'm hoping to be less obliged to use.

I'm actually quite happy to have an excuse to not join the family chat (which is on WhatsApp, which I refuse to use) where people actually send good morning and good night messages every day. Ugh.

I'd guess that when RCS has a proper, standards based (not Google-based) encrypted mode then WhatsApp will gradually die off.

I don't use WhatsApp. I also won't use social media apps or their messaging counterparts. If people want me they can get me on email, phone or iMessage. If that's a problem for them, that's their problem. :)

Well, I’ve followed that approach during several years, because I really don’t like having WhatsApp installed (or any Meta app for that matter), and all I got was be disconnected from society. Most social groups or organizations use WhatsApp as a gathering/coordinating tool. Of course, at a personal level people can always phone, but for some reason, I don’t get many phone calls, if any.

You could say “time to make new friends”, but again, it’s pretty widespread the use of WhatsApp for everyone here in south Europe. If you’re not there, you’re out of most social circles.

I’m going to install Telegram, but I’ll probably install WhatsApp again once the damn usernames are operative (why is it taking them so long??).

But having the ability to communicate with everyone, app-agnostic, using my preferred one (iMessage) would really be a blessing.

Exactly this.

Unfortunately this in turn also massively helped the ubiquitous WhatsApp (which was sadly gobbled up by the cancerous Meta/FB).

the RCS integration is a small victory, but this decision is a big loss.

To say there are not people sending business-related messages through iMessage for it to be popular or big enough to put into this regulation seems a bit unbelievable to me.

Its true. iMessage has some use in family iOS groups but beyond that Android has such a large marketshare you need a 3rd party to maintain friend groups. WhatsApp is the dominant platform precisely because it bridges the gap. iMessage is barely used by anyone at all in the UK, EU or anyone outside the States really.

hopefully they go after ‎WhatsApp now because that’s the dominant force in Europe and they show that they’re enforcing equally.
Exactly! I am waiting to be able to make an app that uses the WhatsApp communication

Overwhelming W for Apple honestly. I dont think they'll be as fortunate with the App Store changes though.

I think this might be a short lived reprieve. If Apple goes ahead with RCS interoperability as promised, then many people who currently rely on WhatsApp to bridge the gap might reconsider. I certainly will. And that might mean a decline for WhatsApp and an increase in popularity of iMessage and therefore....

Edit: Typo

I tried desperately to bin WhatsApp, but far too many people still stick to it. Especially when traveling around the world (Africa, Central Asia). It's the last bit of Meta that I'm still active on.

I'd love a phone that was limited to voice, Signal and the odd bit of web browsing. But I'd lose contact with half my friends (the other half I've persuaded to install signal but in some cases I'm one of two or three who they message on that platform).

Network effects are particularly strong with messaging platforms.
