I was fast and got one, yes. Just received email that it's ready. Now I'm just curious if I had bought it for Feb 8 pickup whether or not I'd have gotten an email that it was ready today.
Awesome! :D

I think it's a combination of determination and sheer luck. Congrats and enjoy!

Which Chicago stores had it?

Also if I ordered today with a Feb 8th estimated arrival date will that be moved up if my selected store gets more inventory?
Lincoln Park and Bayshore were showing stock for just a few minutes. Gone now.

I was also watching other stores across the country have stock for literally a few minutes before it disappeared.

I wonder if these are unopened returns slowly trickling back into inventory?

Ah I don't feel so bad then, no way I would want to drive in Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park was the only place I looked. I didn't take the time to find out, assuming phone staff would even know the real answer about estimated date versus future store inventory, so I'd probably just buy it and see what happens. If your first purchase doesn't arrive sooner, but a newer order would, the remedy is simple enough.

I placed a personal pickup order with the Feb 8 date. My guess that is just a generic date they are using. I would anticipate I will get them much sooner then that. If I find some before then, I will just cancel the order. Nothing to lose by at least reserving a pair by placing an order.

well, yesterday, obviously people here in Berlin were able to reserve some and pick them right up at 10 in the morning, cause when I got there, that's what the genius told me.

February 8th? Meaning no store will get more inventory until then? Or will there be a steady trickle of them every day? I was hoping to go tomorrow on my day off when the mall opens at 9am, but it looks like that'll be a failed attempt if they aren't getting any more stock in.

To quote the person I spoke to in chat this morning, "Actually, there are two different types of inventory. In store pickup that you see on the website is February 8th, but the stores do receive them in random shipments daily. They will definitely get more in, but we aren’t sure of when that will be."

Have the courage to get rid of the jack, yet have no courage to ramp up the production to match the demand.
Over 4 months AFTER the launch of the phone before the Air Pods are available for pick up in store if anyone missed the first boat. That is a little excessive, isn't it?

If they had courage *and* a magic wand, they might be able to produce enough to meet market demand.

In case you didn't know, these things actually have to be manufactured. And I highly doubt that someone is stepping on the brakes to limit production.

I was thinking of doing this. When placing an order like this, are you immediately charged or is it when the item is ready for pickup?

They came available for store pick-up today in Georgetown. I ordered one and received the confirmation email that they were working on my order and it should be ready soon. So I decided to go ahead in get down there. Walked in and still no notification of my order being ready for pick up. So I looked on the app for my status and it was "CANCELED." Talked to a manager and they canceled my order because the "over sold." So frustrating.

NYCers, here's the deal: there is no point to "calling around to check inventory." Been there, done that. You'll get a different story every time, depending on whom you talk to.

Shipments are arriving at somewhat random times. The key here is to get there (by intuition, because I can't find a science for this) within FIVE MINUTES after a shipment shows up. I walked into the Grand Central Store today mid-afternoon, and was very lucky because the shipment had JUST arrived 5 mins earlier. "Go over to that table," they said. "Do you have Apple Pay?" they said. "Do you want one or two [pairs]?" they said.

You MUST have Apple Pay. You can ONLY buy two pairs (no more). The table I was referred to had a single box of (I think) only 20 pairs in it. It took less than 90 seconds to buy them. It took less than 5 seconds to pair them.

Good luck.

By the way, they are pretty awesome.

Exactly!
So given their track record with managing the supply of a new launch, you would think that they would give it some more thought before removing the jack, right?

Best Buy has it available again right now for delivery by 12/23/16, this Friday. Just ordered and going to cancel my Apple order which was slated for 1/30/17 delivery!

Can vouch for that. Was in store yesterday and they said that they genuinely don't know when/how many come in but to keep checking and check the website for instore pick up date as it will show available when they get them in. I checked this morning in my local store in the UK and there was some available so managed to get some. Just got back now. They got about 15 delivered this morning, first delivery since Monday.

Yesterday I ordered a set with Bestbuy.com that had an expected delivery date of Feb. 2017. My order is now showing a status of Expected Delivery 12/22/16! No shipping confirmation yet, but possibly a good sign that Bestbuy.com might have more on hand. Crossing my fingers that this latest order status is true... I will post an update if so.

Update: Just received my tracking number for delivery tomorrow!!

No. The jack was going no matter what. I highly doubt they made the decision to kill the jack dependent upon whether AirPods would be available when the phone launched.

AirPods are an accessory; phone works just fine without them.

You just have to constantly refresh your local pick up options on apple.com.

They pop up randomly as stores get stock through out the day. I found my local store had them...and sold out right in the midst of my checking out. And couple hours later another apple store went green with available pick up and I snagged those.

When will Amazon.com start selling the Airpods?

I can only buy from them... as far as I know, Apple does not accept international credit cards and do not ship to freight forwarders...

Which goes back to the point where killing the jack is bad for the customers.
It only benefits Apple to sell us dongles.
