Very well said nagromme. 😉

I also think that Apple will support Mac OS X on the PPC until around 2010.

Don't really see any reason to continue OS 9 past 2007 either. There is definitely software available in X now.

Wasn't the transition from Motorola to thee PPC also a major change?

If Win emulation will run at full speed on Intel macs.......

I've not had time to read all the threads so I don't know if this topic has been discussed, but it just occured to me that if it will be posssible to run Windows at full spead on the Intel Macs (as has already been discussed in the wider community) will it be possible for PearPC, or something like it, to run Intel compiled Mac Os X at full speed in the Windows environment? I know Apple head honchos have come out and said that it will only be Apple hardware that will be capable of running OS X but......c'mon......you can run OS X on a PC just now (albeit a lot slowwwwwweeeeer than on PPC).

If this is a realistic possibility then....gawd knows what would happen! Just a thought.

I would realy like to have a look at those intel equiped powermacs. Has anyone posted any photos yet??

Also SJ promised more PPC products that are yet to come, should we expect to see a Dual 3GHz Powermac?

I can't wait to get my hands on one of those beauties!! 😀
You'll be waiting. NO MORE PPCS, unless you buy one now!

I didnt have time to see the whole keynote, but does anyone know if steve said which mac will be the first to have an intel?

If not what are peoples guesses?.....perhaps finally give the powerbooks a decent chip? or would the powermacs have to be first?

Let the speculation begin.
Mini Mac will be 1st..

I just bought a Mac for the first time, and so far I love it! But what does this switch mean for me, having just bought a computer using the IBM two weeks ago? Are software companies going to stop making software for my version of the Mac, or will it matter? I'm I going to have to buy a new iMac a year from now because I can't find software for mine (I was hoping to get atleast 3 years out of this one)

And if you ask me...
Apple might as well just buy a toilet to flush their company down the drain, it'd be much faster than what thier doing now.
After all of this I predict apple will loose the qualitly they were once known for. And people running Windows on a Mac, sounds like a bad dream.
And if I'm wrong about any of this, or I'm clearly misunderstanding, please let me know.
You just got hosed my friend! For my the choice is clear: buy a Dell.

Some people will pirate and illegally hack OS X to run on non-Apple PCs. Just like some people pirate iTunes songs.

But it won't be easy, it won't be legal, it probably won't work all that well on the wrong hardware, and it won't be supported by Apple OR by software/hardware vendors.

So it will be a poor option, and few will take it. It won't hurt Apple's business.

More and NEW PowerPC Macs ARE coming. Watch the keynote, and read this thread.

This is a GREAT move for Macs... but it's ALSO not making PPC Macs obsolete.

Seriously--once the shock wears off you'll see the details of the plan and stop panicking 🙂

I agree. I guess this is what it was like for those people who were first told the Earth is actually round and not flat.

There's nothing to panic about, I really don't get all the negativity, there's no basis for it. Why the love-fest for IBM who's even bigger and more monolithic than Intel?

Some people just don't like change, no matter how good it may be for them. The status-quo can be a powerful thing.

I was just thinking about the VirtualPC concept. If an OS is loaded on VMWare, it is presented with 'standard hardware' no matter what hardware it's actually running on.

I wonder if VMWare or Bochs would (or could) make their virtual hardware the same 'standard hardware' of the Mac-Intel box. If they did that, it still wouldn't be easy (or legal), but all people would have to do is get OSX to work on this 1 machine (the VMware virtual machine). Alternatively/similarly, someone might hack darwin (and OSX Intel) to run on VMware.

At that point, OSX Intel would run on Windows XP or Linux on ANY Intel machine they supported. The downside would be not getting the new core image goodies.

Well depends.......Motorola also made/makes the G4 😉
