I understand the screen area difference.. As I've stated on this thread a couple of times. But my point is... if a potential customer goes in deciding between the 9.7" & 12.9" iPad and the only difference between them is the screen difference.. I doubt that customer would go for the 12.9" iPad given the 300 price difference. That's my only point.

it was clear that the air would get the upgrade to pro features, however I strongly disagree with your comment. I have an iPad pro because of the larger screen [and considered it against a future 9.7 inch iPad with pencil], which makes the world of difference to me in its use. Well worth a $300 premium to me. My usage is as a designer for drawing and also using apps side by side.

This is why they have different models and screen sizes. Different uses for different people - I can understand portability vs size etc.
The current iPad pro hardware is perfect and as some others have said, spend time on the OS and it will be great.

Conspiracy? Erm no. In this case just marketing to increase profits to bring up that bottom line and make the slowing sales less painful and keep the shareholders a bit happier. I.E. business

If it's true.

Why?
Why is it only 'American' corporations supporting this stance?

Apple are very much playing this as some sort of PR stunt as well to advertise they are going to make uncrackable devices, they are on a marketing stint for sales.
But I have also read they do not have the full support of the American public, some accusing them of supporting terrorism.

I am pretty certain where this will all end up, but you carry on your wave of people power.

It's meaningless in the rest of the world anyway as I believe each country has different laws, pretty sure in the UK Cook would have been out in jail by now. So it is an interesting insight into American law.

Hmmmmmm all of a sudden I see this as nothing more than an excuse for Apple to slap on an extra $300 to the new iPad's price. So will that mean no new iPad Air then?
Adding the Pencil support is just providing some bluetooth support right? And no doubt they will start the storage from 16B.

I was interested in this product, but if they increase the price by more than £50 just to add 'Pro' on it's back then no thanks.

Well meaning Apple cronie:
Sir, iPad sales are faultering, should we add those features we've been holding back?

Tim:
No ... Just create a more expensive 'Pro' version and upsell the customer. Leave the poor feature set on the low end model at the old price point and punish uneducated customers. Hell, add an 8GB version and sell it for $100 less too. That way we can claim we lowered the price of the original.

Apple's product line-up becomes more and more confusing days after days. iPhone 5SE ( or iPhone 6s 4' ) is coming this iPad thing is coming, MacBook is already come to the market what are you trying to do Apple? Customers should easily choose product on your market. How you're tell the difference between MacBook and MacBook Air? Which customer buy MacBook after learn a single USB port and price? I missed good, old times...

Why is there so much confusion about the MacBook vs MacBook Air? If we think about it, this isn't that different from when the MacBook Air first came out. The MacBook was the "mainstream" model and the MacBook Air was the pricier model with a single USB port. Now the roles are reversed. What was clear then and is clear now is that the pricer "underpowered" device is the future direction, and the older model is being kept around temporarily only to maintain a price point. In another year or two, USB-C will be the dominant connector for those times when wires are needed. So expect the MacBook to be the new mainstream then.

..........

Sigh... so... by you logic you MUST and only MUST support Apple IN EVERY SINGLE THING THEY DO NO MATTER WHAT YOUR OPINION IS????

That's EXACTLY what you are stating. No, sorry, if you are incapable of coping with the notion that people on here can support a giant corporation on some things and not others, can think for themselves, that's frankly your problem.

You also appear to have totally forgotten Apple is a corporation first and foremost and is constantly marketing, all the time, because it generates sales, a good CEO will always know that. It's called business, not a conspiracy, although from my posts you quoted I have no idea why you concluded that?
Perhaps you believe it as you are an American? Isn't that a stereotype of Americans?

I understand all of that, I just do not believe it is all about marketing as you do. I don't support Apple in all things, I also don't bash them about all things.

Perhaps the constant mistrust of Business is a UK thing.

All good..!
Now we need an iOSPRO.. To complete the package,, with user manageable file sys, easy file transfer ..etc...
A less limiting iOS version.

And i think apple can market this iOSPRO as an upgrade for pro useres and charge for it.
I will pay in a blink of an eye!

And we need more robust, comprehensive pro apps...
Maybe more ram will help this area.

Not gonna happen. Been discussed to death.

Next.

The iPad Pro's screen has twice the surface area of the Air.

So what?

The iPhone has several times the surface area of the Apple Watch, but it doesn't cost that much more. Often much less.

I feel the iPad Pro is much too expensive in the UK. iPad Air 2 128GB is £560, iPad Pro 128GB is £800! It's not worth £240 more, particularly when it brings nothing more other than a larger screen. Most people won't need a physical keyboard or stylus.

But the worst thing is iOS. The iPad is crying out for a better OS. Apps are dying because of this restriction, and hence the iPad.

*cries after reading about the reasonably sized iPad Pro on his big ass iPad Pro*

Hmmm ... well that might bring me back to the original size iPad. Last year I switched to the mini and really like it since I mostly read manga and comics on it. But if I could use the Apple Pencil with the "Air 3", I'd have to think about that.

Can't wait.

I also hope the next version of iOS and iWork really expand iPad capabilities. I'd love to use my iPad more at work.

Yes, I'm a sucker who will pay an extra $100 if it's really a 9.7" iPad Pro with the pencil and smart connector

If the price point remains the same, this would represent a tremendous value.

I expect iOS 10 to bring even more power user features, making this a complete computing solution for the masses.

If the price remains the same it will be a good value. Here's hoping it does.

This is something to be positive about. Please do the same with the mini, I'll take both.

Hmm...I would prefer if they made the ipad pencil supported for the mini so i can carry it as a small notepad around work. But I don't like the Ipad Air 2 because Ipad pro simulates a full A2 paper size which is great because I don't have to zoom in and out. I don't like when i split screen the ipad pro and work with a smaller screen space;/

I'm not really sure you actually reduce the iPad matrix all that much.

Your proposal has 16 (or 20) models, depending on how you read (+100$ for Cellular).

The pricing structure you list has... 22. The difference looks bigger because of how you list things out is so different between the two. And in some ways, you actually have more choices to make, since you now have both the iPad Pro 9.7" and the iPad 9.7" which are both current generations. Since the 9.7" has taken the lion's share of the sales, this is actually a good way to make the confusion worse. The paradox of confusion arises when you have choices overlap. Ideally, you want the decision flow to be something like:

What Size Screen? -> How Much Storage? -> LTE? -> Profit.

Currently, it is complicated by the previous generation being available as a "Need it cheaper?" option.

And... if we were to follow Apple's current lead where they also cull sizes from the older models, which takes your 22 options down to... 20. So you suggest replacing what is more likely to be 20 models (assuming the iPad Pro 9.7" details are correct), to 16-20 models, depending on if you can get cellular on the smaller storage models.

Not much of a savings, IMO, and the paradox of choice isn't a great argument for justifying basically the same number of models.

And as an aside, we were already at 20 models before Jobs passed. So.... yeah, he did allow this cluster.

The Pricing Structure

iPad Pro 128GB Cellular: $1079
iPad Pro 128GB: $949
iPad Pro 32GB: $799
iPad Pro 9.7" 128GB Cellular: $929
iPad Pro 9.7" 128GB: $799
iPad Pro 9.7" 32GB: $649
iPad Air 2 128GB Cellular: $829
iPad Air 2 128GB: $699
iPad Air 2 64GB Cellular: $729
iPad Air 2 64GB: $599
iPad Air 2 16GB Cellular: $699
iPad Air 2 16GB: $499
iPad Mini 4 128GB Cellular: $729
iPad Mini 4 128GB: $599
iPad Mini 4 64GB Cellular: $629
iPad Mini 4 64GB: $499
iPad Mini 4 16GB Cellular: $529
iPad Mini 4 16GB: $399
iPad Mini 2 32GB Cellular: $449
iPad Mini 2 32GB: $319
iPad Mini 2 16GB Cellular: $399
iPad Mini 2 16GB: $269

HOLY CRAP

I'm feel fairly confident in saying that Steve Jobs would not have allowed that cluster. This gets into issues with what is known as "The Paradox of Choice", which basically means that when presented with too many options, consumers often opt to chose nothing. I've seen this happen with family members who want to upgrade their iPad, but are more confused than ever and never make the upgrade. They're afraid they'll regret picking the wrong one.

What I think Apple should do

Everything in only two capacities. Extra storage for current models. Previous models don't get cellular, and it's simplified to a $100 add on. Previous models also don't get gold and rose gold options. You could maybe even make it so that the base storage options don't get gold or rose gold across the board, but that might add confusion. Previous Pro models are not sold. 128GB chips are a lot cheaper these days. All the naming simplified.

iPad Pro Plus 64/256GB: $699/899 + $100 for Cellular
iPad Pro 64/256GB: $599/799 + $100 for Cellular
iPad 32/128GB: $499/599 + $100 for Cellular
iPad Previous Gen: 16/32GB: $349/399 (no cellular)
iPad Mini 32/128GB: $399/499 + $100 for Cellular
iPad Mini Previous Gen 16/32GB: $249/299 (no cellular)
