Apple continues to have no close competition in the tablet market, earning 42.3 percent of the global tablet market share in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to a new report from Canalys.

Apple shipped an estimated 16.9 million iPads during the quarter, up from 14.8 million in Q4 2023. The company's closest competitor was Samsung, with 7 million tablets shipped in Q4 2024 for 17.8 percent of the market. Lenovo, Huawei, and Xiaomi were third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

For all of 2024, Apple shipped an estimated 57 million iPads for 38.6 percent of the market. Apple shipped over twice as many tablets as Samsung in 2024, with Samsung shipping just 27.8 million.

Apple refreshed its high-end iPad Pro with an M4 chip in 2024, plus it revamped the iPad mini with an A17 Pro chip and added an M2 chip to the iPad Air. In 2025, Apple plans to refresh the low-cost iPad and update the iPad Air yet again.

I use mine less now that I've shifted to a dedicated eInk tablet for note taking during work. I also reach for the laptop first for the majority of things.

The iPad needs some differentiating features to bring it back to the useful side of the pack for me.

I think that’s why mine gets no use. There’s nothing different about it from my phone but a bigger screen and my 16PM screen size is big enough to do what I’d do on the iPad.

I'm curious. The first few posts include stories of how y'all don't use or need the iPad. So what are the conclusions here? Yet "Apple shipped an estimated 16.9 million iPads during the quarter, up from 14.8 million in Q4 2023." What's it all about?

And BTW, I use my iPad Mini for a number of tasks, including reading in bed at night. The iPhone is just too small for that. And I regularly use my 13" M4 iPad Pro. Both are an integral part of my daily living. So, what's it all about? Why do so many people here have a dislike for the iPad and so many more millions appreciate and use it? Something unique is going on here.

It makes me truly sad how bad Android is

I don't think they stand a chance in the future . Apple vertical integration and monopoly just warrants them much better apps and love from devs

I don't see anything changing that frankly

To add to the distaster, Android native apps SUCK , especially in comparison with apple's . The lack of pro apps and good api on Android was killing me

Which just allows apple to adopt whatever policy they want , and inflate the prices (I mean the price of these iPad pros m4... come on)

The iPad is probably my favourite Apple product. I just love the touch screen. I use mine primarily for reading magazines, newspapers and internet. I would like a bigger screen option and better OS but otherwise it’s a brilliant device.

That’s interesting! I can’t find a reason to grab it. It has the same apps as my 16PM. My phone is always on me, so I use it for stuff. Then I use my Mac for things the phone can’t do. The iPad just doesn’t fit into my day at all.
I use mine to give my phone a rest and help the battery stay healthy.

Use it so much I got rid of my laptop. The only computer left in the home is an old iMac that I use for backups and taxes. With wifi calling no reason to even use my iPhone in the house.

Interesting. Phone screens are too small to be useful for me. The phone sits on the bookcase most of the time and it's really rare that it even leaves the house.

I really can’t see how people could do away with a Mac or PC for just an iPad. My Mac I can’t live without. Being a bit dramatic, but you understand.

I've developed with FileMaker Pro since 1988, and FileMaker Go on an iPad has made me very happy for the last 15 years. I started building solutions that ran on iPads the day it was released, and it literally changed my computing life, just like my first Mac Plus and my first PowerBook (170). I just have one client now (I'm 68), and we have an iPad with FileMaker Go on all of our forklifts in each of our four warehouses. Nothing in Windoze/Android world can do the things an iPad and FileMaker Go can do so easily.

I got rid of my laptop (2018 Intel Pro), use the iPad for mobility needs (Pro w/ M1), and got myself an M4 Mini for the desktop. It's tempting to upgrade for the OLED, but this M1 has some legs that can still be stretched. But in any event, the iPad not only serves the mobility needs, but it's making me question why I have more than 1 TV.
