I have a Acer Chromebook 14 which is really nicely built, I think I paid $230.00 for it on sale at Best Buy. I would take it any day over my iPad Air 2 for productivity use as I really have not found anything it can't do and it's very very fast. Now for lounging around it's the Air 2 all the way.

I don’t really see the audience for the Pixelbook. Sure, it’s an interesting device, but I don’t see the average consumer plunking $1K for it.
Actually, there are some people that would benefit from this:
  • Students
    • Not all students, I am talking about the ones that are not super tech savvy, but need a bit more performance in order to do their work without having to worry about security issues.
      • Think those studying to be teachers, they need for example some basic photo and video editing, so the nicer processor will work well to keep the time needed to do so down, but they don't need to get too detailed with advanced editing.
  • Elderly
    • Here it is about simplicity, making it easy to just click on an app and it just work to communicate with others.

I am sure there are others and no, this won't be for everyone, but it will be for some people.

Elderly? Hands down the iPad.
Students? There are a lot more powerful options that cost way less then +1k$

That price point on a Chromebook made it an easy choice for our middle-schooler. They’re working on Chromebooks at school so there was that convenience of giving our child something familiar. It was also very portable, easy to maintain and won’t ruin our budget if it gets damaged in transit and we need to repair or replace it. It’s also pretty sturdy with a very good battery life.

The Pixel Book is beautiful but it’s very expensive and I think that’s going to narrow down the customer base quite a bit among all the people who are used to Chromebooks being practical, budget-friendly devices.

Eh. I always like to see more competing products, but for the price of a Pixelbook you might as well spend a little bit more and get a much more capable Surface. Though I guess theres a niche for people who don't want to use Windows or iOS.

Could be an interesting alternative to Microsoft or Apple in the coming years if they refine the design and make it more capable in the software.

I don't think ChromeOS has gained much traction other than in education where school boards can afford to provide laptops in numbers using inexpensive Chromebooks.

I find it funny the author mentions operating system limitations as a negative for the Pixel book. As if iOS doesn’t have many limitations itself. I’m happy with my iPad Pro and have no interest in a Pixel book. However, for real PC requirements then a Windows or Mac notebook is needed.

Staying away from Google hardware, after many expensive experiments with it. Including the beautiful but near-useless Pixel C.

Isn't ChromeOS useless without internet?

Who uses their ipad pro without internet...barely no one unless they are reading pre-downloaded kindle books or ebooks which can be done on chrome os as well??? And for the apps, stored music, documents, or video that don't require a internet connection, those same/similar apps etc. can do the same on chrome os due to android integration and native storage with a native real file manager unlike iOS. Most chromebooks even have microsd card slots so you can have all of your documents, videos, Music etc loaded on their that can be used at anytime without a internet connection. iOS on the iPad is full of compromises and work arounds to perform certain tasks.

At least, Chrome OS is actually a full OS with tons of potential and works just fine for many people. You would love a macbook with iOS app integration and touchscreen, many users on here have requested it yet this has not occurred yet.

But I do acknowledge after owning a Pixelbook and returning it, its not worth $1000 dollars and there are cheaper alternative chromebooks with the necessary speed and responsiveness to run chrome os and android apps well.

software/hardware implementation always wins out over pure specs. While Google's offering has the specs, the apps are not optimized for it. Which is a real shame since this is not a third market product. One would think Google would require devs to optimize apps for this before it hit the market.

Isn’t the Pixelbook just a vanity excercize by Google to show the tech press they can design premium hardware like Apple? I kind of feel the same about Microsoft and Surface.

No, it’s for the same reason Google made the old Chromebook Pixels. They’re basically making it for themselves, and then saying we can buy it too.

Then we have Google shutting down the Chrome App Store for Windows, Mac and Linux. Probably hoping to force people using those Apps on actual PCs to buy a Chromebook if they want to keep using them.

I don't see the point. Android apps are pretty bad on a phone and even worse on a tablet. I couldn't imagine how bad they are stretched to this size. Chrome OS isn't viable as a good solution either.

what do you mean Android apps are "pretty bad on a phone"? It's not 2012 anymore...

anyways yea this device is weird. It's kind of in my target market as I do digital illustration but even the lowest tier Surface Pro blows this thing away.

Why is this on the "News" feed? And no offence intended (I recognise this is a free site!), but this is hardly a review of the two devices...
Wouldn't pieces like this be better placed on the MacRumors Blog page?

Really, nothing like real comparison of the two devices in this article. No figures, no testing for some common use cases - nothing. Just "We've got a Pixelbook. It's a sort of a tablet". OK then.

No I think their ultimate goal is to start pulling people away from Windows/macOS. They aren't doing it for "vanity."

Surface is beyond amazing. Something I previously only said about Apple hardware. I was an Apple user for 13 years and the Surface Book 2 made me switch. Still have my STILL amazing 4 year old MBP which my fiancee now uses. Apple still kills it in the OS department IMO but Microsoft is making the better hardware these days.

On a side note, IMO, the ipad pro cannot really do anything PRO until you add a smart keyboard or apple pencil.

That being said if apple is going to label it as PRO they should include at least the keyboard and or the apple pencil.

What is the basis of this statement?

The Pixelbook weighs 2.4 lbs and has a volume of 39.67 cu.in.

The 12.9" iPad Pro weighs 1.49 lbs and has a volume of 28.12 cu.in.

This is before you attach the smart keyboard to the ipad pro and that brings it to a bit more weight than the pixelbook. Guess he was pointing out the portability factor by weight although I wouldn't mind either of those weights for a portable device.
