The plastic adjustment knobs on the lanyard could be magnetic so if you don't want the lanyard to just be hanging, you could attach the magnet to a corresponding magnet area on the case.

I’ve never desired a lanyard but I’ve been thinking about it and I think I like the idea, I am always worried when I’m walking that I’ll drop my phone so I might give it a try. I’m not going to hang bling from my iPhone 😂

My wife and her friends use them. Obv nothing I’d put on my phone as a male but it’s super handy when you’re taking pics and need to free up a hand. It just dangles from your wrist. I get the appeal
 
While I don't see the appeal of a lanyard on a phone personally, I would have thought Apple could do something a little different like having a catch inside the USB port that could secure a lanyard. Then the weight would be more evenly distributed with the lanyard attaching at the centre point. It seems more 'Apple' to find a discreet way to add it.
