the 4 did not have a unibody. it's main design elements were comprised of a wrap around external antenna and a glass back. the 5 design is new and does not share those attributes.

youre just upset because it has a similar shape. oh nos.

You're right, the iPhone 5 looks nothing like the iPhone 4.

Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better.

As a 4S owner who always gets every other generation, I'm looking forward to the 5S! Though I will admit I am not crazy about the 5's design. It's nice, but nothing like the leap from the 3G/3GS casing to the 4/4S design.

Two years for the price of one, that's actually pretty cool.

MacRumors has received several images that appear to show both the interior and rear shell of Apple's upcoming iPhone 5S. The device appears to carry the same redesigned logic board that appeared earlier this week, suggesting that this is indeed a new iPhone.

Among the interesting observations from the images:

- Based on the observable features, the logic board appears to be an exact match to the one that appeared in photos earlier this week, with a slightly narrower profile and a new layout for connectors and other components.

- The main chip on the logic board is interestingly not labeled with an A-series name such as on the A6 seen in the iPhone 5. It is unclear whether the chip name has been removed somehow or if it was never printed in the first place.

- A date code visible on the bottom of the main chip reads "1243", signifying that the chip was manufactured in the 43rd week of 2012, corresponding to late October. This would seem to be much earlier than would be expected for a new handset, so it is unclear whether this is a very early prototype that could still be running the same A6 chip found in the iPhone 5 or if it is in fact a different chip.

- The battery carries a more recent Apple Part Number of 616-0652 compared to the iPhone 5 battery, which has carried several different part numbers including 616-0611 and 616-0613. The new battery also has a higher capacity of 5.92 Whr, compared to the 5.45 Whr capacity of the iPhone 5's battery. The battery also has several blank boxes printed on it where various regulatory logos would be, suggesting that this is a prototype battery yet to receive final certifications.

- The rear shell photo shows a vertical pill-shaped window for the LED flash as opposed to a round window, supporting rumors of a dual LED flash for the iPhone 5S. A similar pill-shaped flash window was depicted on a case maker's design drawings that also leaked earlier this week.

- Regulatory identifiers shown on the back of the device such as the FCC ID appear to be placeholders, in several cases reading X1234X.

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 5S later this year alongside a lower-cost iPhone with a plastic shell that will be available in an array of color options. Rumors have suggested that Apple is likely to release the new iPhones around the September timeframe.

Unless they do some cool hardware upgrade you get two years out of one single purchase, unless you're like me and upgrade every year just because I like to have the latest and greatest. But the fact it's a free IOS upgrade, I'm not complaining.:)

Why are you people so against advancement in technology? I talk about some of the good things Android is doing and I get killed! If it was up to you guys, we'd still be running single core PowerPC CPUs and having tiny 15" monitors with a 1024x768 resolution.

I like advancements in technology, only issue I have is when they try to remove things that are of higher quality because they want more money for a lower quality product. Aside from that I want amazing displays, speed etc...

Because you're acting as if apples offering is some outdated product that can't compete with the current lineup of phones. That's not true in any way. It's not the fact that you're talking about advancement of technology it's the fact that you're spreading FUD.

You're entitled to your own opinions. Not your own facts. At a glance, I can name ten significant external design differences between the iPhone 4/4S and the iPhone 5. There are also significant changes inside the phone.

To say that there are merely two differences is to misrepresent the facts.

The 3GS had a compass. The 3G did not. I never found the compass app useful, but the ability to orient the map was nice.

Even so, I held onto my 3G until the iPhone 4 was released.

I think the other guy is forgetting the biggest difference between the 3G and 3GS was taking VIDEO. also the 3G only came in white for the 32gb model. with the 3GS both models came in both colors.
Compass yes, and idk why no one on this forum like SPEED and POWER and smoothness when it comes to phones. I have had every single model and personally think each one was a well improved in more than one way.

You missed my point. Every upgrade has been significant enough to warrant an update for people like me.

3G to 3GS was absolutely one of the best upgrades because the phone went from sluggish to usable.

4 to 4S, although not the biggest upgrade, had faster Internet which was enough for me to want to upgrade.

How is apple gonna take my money now? They're gonna release the same phone and expect me to buy it? Nope.

There has to be something else up their sleeve. I'm calling it now.

Apple is a business. They want my money. And they're not gonna get it by giving me 0.1 extra GHz.

Reading posts by silly, entitled children with no idea what to do with their money always brightens my day. Thank you.

I'm not upgrading to a phone that's 8 months old before I've even held it in my hands. I got the 4 on launch day, I intend to try and do the same With the 5S

Well all right then, princess.

why do some of you expect the oceans being parted annually?

if youve invested millions or more into a tool line for a new phone design, wouldnt you want to get more than 1 year's use out of it as the latest design? you know, like your TVs, stereos, and other consumer electronics that hardly change form factors from year to year?

why would phones be any different? because youre bored?

that doesnt really happen. apple has a roadmap that guides thier releases -- they dont add new fangled tech willy-nilly. see LTE or NFC.

Dual LED flash as the standout feature of this phone? My HTC EVO had that years ago.

Still running the same dual core CPU? True flagship phones have moved on to quad and octa core offering ludicrous speed and power.

A tiny sub-HD screen? When is Apple going to step it up to the big leagues? We have had 720p and now 1080p phones with sizes around 4.5 to 5" and still Apple trots out the smallest flagship phone on the market. They are losing badly in this category.

Wait, by smallest phone you mean *winning, right? Isn't that the point of portable electronics?

The 'bigger is better' argument is crude. If bigger were inherently better, everyone would be crying for the iPad or iPad mini to have phone functionality. But they're not.

It's like trying to say that wallets are dumb because you can hold so much more in a safe. Really? Duh, but no one wants to walk around with a safe, even if it holds more

same thing in a new pa...wait a sec? so basically it's the "same thing in the same packaging" "Great INNOVATION"

So... we only can dpect storage, battery and speed gains on the 5S...:apple:

I still hope it could include fingerprint scanner and nfc to lead again against Android, this is a shame.:(

If IOS7 is really able to sort photos in chronological order and the memory will be increased to 128GB, I've think about to change.

The problem is, I want to have all my photos on my iPhone, but the amount of photos increases faster than the amount of memory in the phone.

Why do some people expect Apple (or any other company for that matter, but especially Apple) to come up with some earth shattering product every 6 months - 1 year? We don't seem to expect this kind of "innovation" from other companies. When you buy a car, do you expect them to come up with some amazing new feature that has never been there before every year or so? Cars have stayed largely the same for a very long time with minor upgrades to them as the years go along. (This is just one example).

Really, what do people want these companies to come up with for a phone? It's a phone that does some computing functions. There is kind of a ceiling that they hit eventually that will limit these seismic changes in the technology. I agree that the 5S probably won't be earth shattering as far as style and features go...but for those who have an older phone, it will be an upgrade for them. Maybe not for 5 owners, but geez, you just bought your 5 less than a year ago, what the heck do you need a new phone with amazing new features for anyway? I'd say most lower to middle class people do not upgrade their phones until the 2 yr contract is up anyway because most can't afford to shell out $600-800 for a new phone just because a new one came out.

Alright, I'm off my soapbox. I don't want to offend anyone, not my intention. Just talking.

Here's the thing though, the 5 itself wasn't earth shattering. They gave it a taller screen and LTE (which isn't particularly helpful to those of us who don't live in LTE regions). The design isn't radically different. Even though it technically has a better CPU, it's not really noticeable since the 4S itself had plenty of power. Battery life is the same at best. Camera is the same, except the lens doesn't scratch as easily.

Honestly, the 5 was almost a 4S+. And now they're releasing a 5S which is likely an even more incremental upgrade. So the problem isn't that Apple doesn't release something exciting every year. The problem is they haven't released anything exciting since the iPhone 4.

Also the car analogy doesn't work in this case. For most people, a car is a pretty significant investment. It's not feasible to upgrade a car every year, and automotive technology doesn't evolve nearly as quickly as phones. Apple deliberately stays behind the curve, just so they can milk out their customers in incremental steps. Steve had the talent of adding just enough to keep things exciting, while still leaving plenty of room for future upgrades. Nowadays they don't really have that touch.

I highly doubt the battery will be any better. I don't remember any of the S models having improved battery. And a part of me doubts that they'll increase storage. They know that many people have a sweet spot between 16 and 32gb; I really doubt Apple will give up that free $100 (iPad could have easily had increased storage by now, but Apple knows that they get more money this way). At the most I can see them replacing 64GB with 128GB, since 64GB is already a niche product. I don't think they'll add yet another price tier, as $500 on-contract is ludicrous

I'm not surprised that it's the same design, but I have to admit that I was half-expecting them to shake things up considering all the **** they've gotten recently.

While I guess it would have been nice for the company to flip off all their critics with an awesome new design, I guess it's kind of good that they still feel the need to march to the beat of their own drum.

Apples best work is done with conviction, not because others are telling them to do something.

they should have changed the design....:( it's been long enough seeing that same old boring design.

I've never understood comments like this. How would you change it exactly? Make it rectangular just to be different for the sake of it??

It needs to be a rectangular block with a screen.

----------

I want to have all my photos on my iPhone

Whatever for? It's a phone, not a storage solution.

Not surprised anyway for this picture.. I am on Android now willing to get the Iphone 5s experience or be disappointed. It seems everyone's (OEM'S) is keeping their pace on innovations to slow down somewhat upon battery performance and carrier networks upgrades the old ways for the new faster grid.

What's the hold up..

Personally I have had every iPhone from the 3G to my 5 and this time around I can say I do not plan on getting the 5S. I want a new phone with the better iOS like 7 should be and give me at min a 4.5" but prefer 4.7, or 4.8, or 4.9" screen, nothing over 5.0 though, I had the Note II and 5.5" was a bit much.

Everyone misunderstands that quote. He was making a statement about his anger that Apple has lost it's way, when a mosquito bit him on the bum.

"Can't innovate anymore" <bite> "My ass!!!!!"

This is hilarious!!:D

I don't really care much for a new design every year. Every iPhone looks good for at least 3 years before other companies catch up. For those trolling about Androids looking better look at Galaxy 3 & 4; they look basically the same. Give me a lightning fast processor to make it a super phone and I'm sold.

The iPhone is a mature product. Mature products don't go through radical redesigns on a yearly basis. They tend to make small, incremental improvements with occasional re-imagines.

every detail makes the phone look different, for example look at the s4 and the htc one, both of 'em look completely different don't they? are they just a rectangular block with a screen, i dont think so. still not satisfied? look at the lumia 925 and the GS3, do they look alike? there are many variations and different outcomes, you can not drag the same design for millions of years.

Does the iPhone look like the htc one or the gs3? You're comparing different brands. A better example would be does the gs3 look like the gs4 and yes...Yes it does.

...Whatever for? It's a phone, not a storage solution.
Why does someone put music on it? - It's a phone, not a jukebox.
Why does someone put games on it? - It's a phone, not game console.
Why does someone makes photos with it? - It's a phone, not a camera.
etc.
The iPhone is not just a phone. It was also provided to put photos on it, but it's a bug that the sort order of the photos is scrambled, because a few years ago it was fine and it changed with some updates.
