IMO the reason the world is so screwed up and litigious is people like you that don't understand that people are fallible, machines created by people are fallible, all things are fallible.

To demand and expect perfection just because you spent some money is absurd. It's just a recipe for disappointment. Stressing out because some machine is broken for a couple of hours is just silly. Now if it is still down tomorrow or through the weekend, but so far it's just one of those things.

Oh and I've been an IT manager with both corporate and government organizations for 20 years.


Yes, and people choose the alternative that is closer to perfect, that causes less frustration and brings more joy. As an older gentleman, I think you would know that some people are more fallible than others. And that fallibility can at times be caused by gross negligence and should not be excused.

When all of this mess is said and done, sorted, Apple will still make a butt load of money on the new iphone, ipad, and macbooks.

Why? Cuz even on Apple's worst of days, they are better than Androids best of days. ;)
 
What do you mean 3 hours ago... This has been happening since last night. I could not activate my nephew's iPhone. It would say this iPhone is registered to an apple ID and would force my nephew to activate to his apple ID.
For some reason, it knew when the password was wrong (he forgot it) but when we reset it, and put the right one in and pressed next, it just didn't do anything. Then, randomly it would come up with this exact message that the activation servers are down. I just thought this was because of the developer portal being down.
So count this as being down since at LEAST 2pm EST, so about 23 hours.

If I bought an expensive phone and contract, and couldn't use it for days... well, that would be my last Apple product.

Nice trolling and by nice I mean pathetic. If Apple were really letting its customers down it wouldn't make 7 billion dollars in 3 months would it. Oh what's that. Couldn't hear you over that tin foil.
 
Any idea how many people are experiencing this? Is this front page news worthy or slow news day worthy?

Seriously, this first world panic crisis crap has to stop. Seriously, travel to a third world nation. Help some people get some clean drinking water or something. Maybe your perspective will change and you'll realize that there are bigger issues in the world.
 
This explains why I couldn't activate my restored iPhone this morning. Eventually got it to go through after 15 minutes though.
 
I agree that a service going down for a few hours in itself isn't a major issue, but there seems to be a steady stream of services going down briefly. Admittedly news sites jumping all over these small issues do inflate things. Still, I wonder if Apple should just institute a defined day every month where services may go down for a few hours for maintenance. Obviously it's preferable to do online maintenance, but I'd imagine sometimes larger scale offline maintenance is necessary or more effective rather than trying smaller fixes until they finally go down unexpectedly. Ideally, Apple could give visibility a week ahead on specific services they expect to take offline for maintenance and a timeframe, but even without that, if there was a regular monthly maintenance day it would be less disruptive if service interruptions happen during that day since at least we know why.
 
All of this activation stuff is being added by Apple to appease the lawyers.

Who cares about the customers who actually have to use it.
 
Better solve the problem soon or the media will jump all over it.
 
And this is precisely why I don't support in-app purchases. I just don't like the idea of relying on a remote server for a trivial feature unlock.
 
It's technology. Technology is known to occasionally have a problem and occasionally break.

As long as they get it running again within a reasonable amount of time, there is nothing "outrageous" about this. Relax! :)

Hope it isn't down as long as the dev center. Talk about outrageous.
 
why do iPhones even have to be activated? With my Galaxy Note 2, I just bought it full price and just inserted my sim card. No need to ask permission to use what I just bought.
