A new study that measures iPhone usage rates by state suggests that Apple's iPhone is most popular in states like Alaska, Montana, Vermont, New York, Kansas, and Mississippi. The study, conducted by Chitika Insights on December 25 through December 31, sampled "hundreds of millions" of U.S.-based iPhone ad impressions to determine the percentage of iPhone users in each state.

Each of the above listed states, along with many states in New England, saw between 55 and 65 percent of smartphone traffic coming from iPhones. Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan saw the lowest amount of traffic coming from iPhones, at 40 to 44 percent. New Mexico was the state with the lowest iPhone usage.

According to Chitika, iPhone usage rates did not correlate to geography or raw population figures, but there was some relationship to both population density and education level. A higher median income was also associated with iPhone usage, but that could be a result of education level, as those two variables go hand in hand. In states with higher education levels and denser populations, iPhone usage tended to be higher.

In a similar study conducted in 2011, Montana was one of the few states where iPhone usage outpaced Android usage. In many states the iPhone is not dominant, but the two usage maps provide an interesting look at how iPhone adoption has grown by state over the past four years. Many states where BlackBerry dominated, for example, are now seeing high iPhone usage.

Chitika's study is not the first to correlate iPhone usage with higher education and income levels. Several other studies have also suggested that iPhone owners are, on average, wealthier and higher educated than other smartphone owners.

... Both of which have low population/population density. iPhone has 100% popularity in my house . I think the stats here aren't all that informative...

Not trying to be a hater, but ... Mississippi?

Southern states like Mississippi do often have a higher number of wealthy families: descendants of those who used to or still own big plantations. Mississippi has fairly decent education as well. It's organized fairly well and they have good teachers there.

And then you woke up?

LOL - true. Must be a mistake. Mississippi is one of the worst states in the US, seriously.

This study was taken over the Christmas Holiday when lots of people where out of state visiting relatives.

Maybe that would skew some of the numbers per state.

What happened to the stat for Washington DC? It's not on the list or the map, so is part of Md or Va or do all the congresspeople and lobbypeople not count?

Interesting choice of categories:

If 44% of web traffic is from iPhones, that's "Very Low." 55? "Very High." It's like when you get a small section of a graph stretched taller to make the data seem more significant.

But even with the differences being small, it's interesting to compare state vs. state nonetheless!

What correlation? So you're telling me Alaska, Montana, kansas, and Mississippi have higher education levels than California and Texas?…

Higher education does not equal smart. Owning an iPhone does not mean one is smart.

Most of the people I've met with phd's were the biggest idiots I've ever met in my life.

When you live in an area where you have to purchase cars and equipment that could mean your life or death your always going to spend a little more on a phone that is extremely reliable and not subject to easy breakage and virus resilient.

District of Columbia?

It appears that the District of Columbia has gone uncounted. (Follow the link and you will find that it is omitted from Chitika's chart.) While D.C. may not have votes in congress, district residents certainly have smartphones! With respect to population, D.C. is bigger than Wyoming or Vermont. The District of Columbia also has an Apple Store (something not all states can claim). Dropping so many mobile phone users from these statistics is sloppy at best.

I'm sorry. I showed this comment to my 9 year old. She laughed too. I told her you were just kidding.;):D

On topic: There seems to be no relevant conclusion to be gained. The highest iPhone penetration is in states with high and low income, high and low population, and high and low education levels. So basically it's saying some states have higher iPhone usage than others. Uh, okay.

Hmm... That explains why I almost _never_ see anything but iPhones here in Vermont. Well, of course that the product is great would be the other reason.

I'd be more interested in a map with some more granularity so we could see if, say, there's more or less of an affinity for iPhone usage in rural vs. urban areas.

Exactly. This unscientific study means nothing.
