They cut prices (through various sales) in China a couple of times - I guess that didn't help too much.

Android phones are getting better in terms of performance / value, and iPhones are simply too expensive if you look at the average income numbers. On average a Chinese person living in China makes about 20% of what an average American does while the iPhone costs a bit more in China due to high taxes.
The average income is quite a foolish way to look at iPhone numbers. There are plenty of rich folks in China in Tier 1 cities.

Good news. Chinese are not dumb to pay that insane Apple tax.
Suck that Tim!
So insecure.

Apple has the privacy issue on its side, but more and more people don’t care about that issue it seems. People want cheap and free even it means selling their personal information
In my opinion their privacy crusade is a farce, if Apple was so worried about privacy they'd have fine tuned privacy controls baked into every iPhone where you can go in disable/delete unwanted apps, firewall connections, disable not only permissions inside apps but services as well but they don't. They only use this privacy crusade to make their users paranoid of anything but Apple devices. Also the apps you use are pulling your data, as well as the websites, and services. Unfortunately complete privacy does not exist. They just use it to make people paranoid and sell more devices.

Keep telling that to yourself. Independent tests show Android sends 10 times more data to 3rd parties & Google compared to iOS.

Not a surprise. Competitors does better camera in low light and so... Better screen... Better autonomy, cheaper... And include fast charger...

Apple is seriously in trouble if they keep putting all their effort in phones only and don't update their mac and keyboards soon...

Don't forget Huawei also offers copious amounts of social credit rewards points. When you think of it that way it makes Huawei a no brainer purchase in China.

It's not like anybody has a gun to their head to persuade you to buy that brand... Oh wait a minute.

The trouble is, with Apple trying to move to services for revenue, they need sales and market share. They seem to be losing both (but perhaps increasing average selling price). No Android user would (or can) use Apple for services. It's a great shame that Apple is taking this approach. I moved away from an iPhone to more neutral services - Dropbox, hosted email with my own name as I Apple won't allow non-iCloud domains. Keeping a Mac but put off even getting a new one because of the keyboard issues on laptops.

And they are catching up with others on streaming and production.

Better screen? Doubtful. Autonomy is what sells in China? Nah. And I’m sure the charger makes a big difference.

btw which Mac needs to be updated to keep Apple from being “seriously in trouble”?

Try again.
huawei mate 20 pro and samsung s10 both have better screen in terms of contract and brightness.

as for macs, alot of folks are holding off on a new mbp til apple fix the keyboard. which is a bigger portion of the market compare to imac, mac mini etc.

Two choices, both not 100% perfect with respect to security and privacy. I’ll take iOS, you can have Android. It’s great to have choices!

In China, everything (literally) is done using WeChat - and there's absolutely no privacy. None.
People don't care.
Privacy in China means: act like everybody else so you don't stick out.

Needless to say that I don't want to live in such a world.

iMessage & Facetime work in China. Plus they have privacy. You should use that. Dont use iCloud in China, if you value privacy. Use encrypted iTunes backup.

Why are people speculating on Apple’s problems in China when they are announcing actual facts in two hours?

There’s a reason I sold Apple recently. I don’t expect good news. And the services narrative means squat to me since that’s all bs. That said I expect a broader pullback anyways. It’s been quite the run up this year.

I don’t see apple ever being in serious trouble

If it were purely an iPhone/Android issue, you’d see Samsung somewhere on that list. I don’t think we can discount the lean toward Chinese companies.

This is bad news for Apple, but really bad news for Samsung. Samsung needs to compete head to head with these companies for a slice of the Android market globally with little barrier to adoption.
Huawei phones are very good and improving a lot faster than established companies have been iterating.

Samsung of course is the first to take the hit.

The same will happen in Europe.

Sure it has nothing to do with massive state subsidies given by the Chinese state, copyright and patent theft, and authorities turning a blind eye at counterfeit products and fake Apple Stores.

It is not responsible to write an article about Chinese iPhone sales without mentioning the giant elephant in the room: Geo-political tensions and the Chinese government. The Chinese government has been actively telling consumers to not purchase American products like the iPhone during this trade war - full page ads in newspapers, etc. They have also been not-so-secretly rewarding companies who purchase Chinese phones like Huawai. Essentially providing subsidies to competitors. The fact that people are still buying the iPhone AT ALL in China under these conditions is the more interesting data.

The real question is: If/when a trade deal has been struck between USA/China, will Chinese smartphone sales revert to pre-trade war numbers? That will be interesting to see.

Instead of speculating, let's look at China fact. Notice China up 16% y/y? China had a bad Q1 in 2019, but it's not a trend yet. Let's wait until Apple reports this afternoon before we start the doom and gloom. If you read the chart posted in this thread, you would have thing China fell off in 2013 and never recovered.

You're graphic is greater China, the MR graphics are mainland China.

The average worker in mainland China still doesn't have the income for iPhone/Galaxy/Pixel priced phones so they go with cheaper domestic's. Apple will eventually find a way to crack the market but it's still some time off.

If apple cared about privacy, why do they not encrypt user data before doing an iCloud backup? They do a server side encryption, not client side.

If it is encrypted on the server, it can be decrypted on the server.

The Chinese people are buying phones made by Chinese brands. How unremarkable. The only question is how many backdoors are provided to the government.

Patriot act in USA means they can access all iCloud data.

The Chinese have this thing called common sense. Why are you gonna cut off your nose to spite your face to have a status symbol? You know what 700 to $1000 could do for a household in China? Besides, the cameras on cheap smartphones are just as good or even better than Apples.

In fact, the Chinese brands probably add more localized services and features that iOS just can’t deliver because Apple doesn’t want to meet those users where the they are. Apple needs to understand that, not everyone will be able to RDF to their every move. There will always be a market there for the company, but its just gonna be a pretty small one unless they start competing on pricing.

Simple. Apple doesn’t know design anymore. Apple focuses on nonsense like APFS, Swift, Face ID, multilens gimmickry, pressure sensitive UI gimmickry, True Tone gimmickry, crapware like iWork and iLife.

Meanwhile, Huawei gives us special edition works of art like this.

That’s a collector’s envy.

It’s all about the basics with me. I like apples ecosystem and won’t move. It’s apples job to educate the market. It’s apples problem if someone is just as happy buying a cheap android and doesn’t know any different.

But Apple is playing the wrong game when they pick things like cameras to highlight most of their focus and marketing on. Android does cameras well too...

Apple continues to have a hard time marketing “why iPhone”. It’s almost as if they don’t know themselves. Psst. It has next to little to do with privacy.
