It seems like the same version as before to me - maybe they bundled some of the supporting services (Quicktime, USB drivers, update utility, etc.) into one program instead of installing them all as services, but it runs just as poorly as ever here.
Working fine for me, using less system resources than Chrome, old ITunes program, or Edge does. No more Apple software upgrade app. No more irritating pop up about installing ICloud.

...and according to reviewers in the store, no ability to connect/update external devices like your iPhone/iPod...so...it actually does LESS than the EXE version.

And it won't even let me download for my Surface...but that could be me and not iTunes.

I'm syncing two ipads and Iphone 8 plus so don't know what that one reviewer is experiencing.

The store version runs much faster than the standalone version. I also gained an extra 4GB of space using the store app. It also does not load junk on startup either using Task Manager so no iTunes helper.

So...when you plug those in via USB, they show up in iTunes?

Good to know...I think it was more than one that mentioned it, but maybe they were just referencing that single user.

Releasing iTunes for Windows doesn’t make much sense to me in 2018. If Apple Music is the future, why keep stringing along a bloated piece of software and further convolute Apple’s brand names? iTunes and Apple Music should be just one app by now: Apple Music, with subscription + option of purchasing music all within the same app. There’s Apple Books, Apple TV, Apple Podcasts, and Apple News (with Apple expected to have a subscription service eventually). The time for “iTunes” should be done.

Among other things, playback of Apple Music is precisely one of the things iTunes does.

iTunes and Apple Music should be just one app by now:

They are, and always have been.

But get rid of the brand “iTunes”. Actually get rid of the entire app and create an Apple Music app for Windows/macOS like iOS from top to bottom with the same simplicity.

They are, and always have been.

Not on iOS and Android, it’s never been.

This app version of iTunes did not work reliably for me, the USB connectivity seemed broken. The iPhone would disconnect randomly. Windows itself would no longer recognize the phone by the name I gave it, it was just "Apple iPhone" now. Transferring images from the DCIM folder was extremely slow, and the connection would break after just a minute or so. I had to press "trust this computer" again whenever I reconnected the iPhone. I reset the privacy settings, rebooted everything, nothing helped. Uninstalled the iTunes app and reinstalled the normal version, and things were back to normal.

I’m not. iTunes Store is exclusively for buying stuff from the Store, not for playback. You want a unified Apple Music app. Music is exactly that.

It's not, because I can't buy music from the Music app. Not unified.

And yet, I can buy books AND consume books in the same app: Books.

But Apple’s brand for buying music is, and always has been, the iTunes Store, which is unique and isn’t confusing anyone.

iTunes for windows is 12.7.4.80
the Windows iTunes app is 12.7.4.81

I generally use my Windows computers to Sync photos to my ipads AND the latest Itunes has a bug
causing the sync process to go very slow on my mac mini 2 to 3 sec per picture.

The Itune app seemed a bit faster

you may have to re plug a few times so the correct drivers gets installed on windows 10

If you look at the process tree this version of iTunes is just launching all of the same supplemental programs itself, nothing has really been changed (besides removing the update service) - I think anyone who claims it is faster is fooling themselves honestly.

I agree. It already locked up on me a few times already. With the desktop app I only install the Mobile service and iTunes as I don't sync anything.

Really all this delay for another lazy stupid centennial app port. Really why can't MS just release actual apps.

It's really just a testament to the Microsoft Store that they don't dictate app design the way Apple does, and how hypocritical Apple is that they won't follow the Microsoft Store standards. It's literally just a straight port of the desktop version of iTunes.

On the other hand, those morons at Microsoft can't even get something as basic as hyphenation support working on Word for iOS (even if it wasn't exposed on the UI, as long as it carried over from paragraph styles created in Windows/macOS it would be fine).

It pisses me off to no end when I read on their release notes or marketing material that Word supposedly keeps formatting unchanged across devices, when that is patently false; the iOS version is a crippled mobile app that feels more like a little bone thrown at the iPad crowd with the intent of getting them to switch to a Surface than anything else.

At least good old fugly iTunes for Windows here is and has always been functionally equivalent to the macOS version (provided you use an old-school pointing device, that is). You gotta give Apple credit where credit's due.
