I have and watch my Apple TV to avoid ads and commercials. iAd on Apple TV seems kind of backwards.

If I wanted to sit through ads, I'd watch regular TV.

iAds are interactive so I can't see them being used (or at least the same way) in a passive content delivery system ... unless SJ is shaking up the TV experience more than I even imagined ... but who knows ... alternative endings to movies maybe? :)

If there's an option to watch sporting events live, even at an additional cost, I will cancel my cable membership right away. I've been wanting to get rid of my cable for years now, but live sports have made me keep it.

Yeah, they really need to get the big AND small sports provider's on board. I'm talking ESPN, CBS Sports, and even the likes of the YES Network, MASN, the Big Ten Network and so on.

My other question, is whether or not I'll be able to just use the iOS type software on my Mini HTPC. Don't want to buy another device to duplicate what I'm already doing...

If you want it streamed through an app - you see a couple of iAds.

If you buy it through iTunes, you watch it uninterrupted.

I can see that model being pretty good. People will have their season passes to things like Dexter, 30 Rock, Top Gear, and the shows they don't care about interruptions with, they'll just stream as part of the app.

I don't think the new AppleTV will be what many people are speculating. I think it will look and work more like Apple's AirPort Express. It will be a simple/cheap way of streaming content from your Mac, iOS device, TimeCapsule or iDisk account. As such it will have no hard drive and will be controlled via an iOS App so you can use your iOS device as a remote control. Simply plug it in and connect it to your TVs HDMI port and for $99 you can watch all your iTunes content on your big screen TV no matter where your content is stored.

Well this is getting exiting, cant wait for this event. Apple is smart to put iOS on everything but macs. Instead of creating a whole new AppStore they just add on to the current one, in which mist of the existing apps can be esily modifyed to run on the "iTV". This event will be one of much anticipation I am verry exited. Soon I can use my iPod,iPad,and iPhone to control my whole house lol. Then there will only be one iHouse lol.

Live content is the only thing with which cable/sat providers have to cling. And that's not going anywhere anytime soon.

While your at it, Apple, mind also providing my internet connection so I can finally kick Comcast to the curb? Thanks.

If it has support for more video formats then it is a win for me. Divx/Xvid etc or at least support the addition of Perian install or something...

Maybe that little 2” touchscreen we’ve seen in rumor reports could somehow be the default bundled AppleTV remote (rather than a new Nano), while those with an iPod Touch/iPhone or iPad could optionally have more space to work with?

I take it all with salt—even if it’s all planned that way, it might trickle out over time and not all at once.

I agree, I think the small touchscreen has a better chance at being part of an iTV remote than on a new nano and I would think any iOS device could also act as a remote.

MLB.tv At Bat should be enough to show the sports companies what they should do.

I am really really excited for this.

The Television industry is overdue for a revolution - and Apple is just the company to make it happen.

I am also, think about how much the TV has changed since first introduced? What has really changed for the viewers? No a lot.

We moved from B/W to Color
We went remote (Crazy) w/a remote for everything
Screen size
Picture Quality

We are still doing and seeing the same thing we did all them years ago.

I can't get too excited about the tv side of this, as being in the UK we will likely have months of wrangling with ITV before this thing could even be launched.

Even then, there are so many content channels that are US specific it makes being a UK consumer very frustrating. (Netflix on the consoles? Hulu on the ipad?)

But for the itunes library (movie downloads, music, podcasts, itunes U) and of course the apps side, it could be very cool.

So the box is $99 but the remote is at least $499? I don't see that working well, except for those people who have already purchased an iPad.

And the "remote" can't go out (of the home) with you unless you are single living alone, because then the rest of the family couldn't enjoy the iTV without it.

I do think it's time for a next-gen :apple:TV to show up. I have the current one and it is GREAT, but definitely old and needing to be refreshed.

With the iOS platform, it at least implies that there could be custom apps for it, which would be 1000 times more open than the current version (requiring hacks to just make it do a few more basic things). Apps would open the door for at least the potential of feeder services beyond just iTunes, which would also make it a lot more appealing.

A few things I hope it includes:
  • option to use local storage without having to have a computer turned on, or, at least the opportunity to use local storage attached to one or more household computers (like the current one can do),
  • option for hardware expansion even if that means one or more simple USB ports, so that companies like Elgato could add some functionality desired by some buyers that Apple doesn't seem to want to build in (this would at least leave room for other companies to offer local HD TV tuners, DVR and/or BD add-ons for those interested in that kind of thing, which would be a great way to also address local news, live network sports, etc).
  • 1080p output even if there is no 1080p iTunes content to rent/buy, nor no upgrades to U.S. broadband capable of transporting a lot of 1080p video files for some time to come. (The current heavily compressed) 720p is not good enough for everyone, but a 1080p platform would give the "720p is all I want or need" crowd every bit of what they want, while shutting up the rest of us that want a little more than minimal 720p. Everyone wins if the hardware is reasonably future proofed.

I'll also assume that it will come with a basic set of key connections, hopefully including:
  • hdmi
  • component video
  • digital audio out
  • stereo audio out
  • 1+ "normal" USB port
  • gigabit ethernet for wired networks
...pretty much just like the current version.

Beyond this, it seems everyone is hoping for a cable (bill) killer where we can get all of our favorite shows without commercials via some kind of iTunes subscription for a lot less than we pay for cable or satt. I like the concept but just don't see any way that it is going to be permitted to happen- especially when our broadband pipes are owned by the same companies that like to be paid (again) for pumping cable into our homes through those same pipes. We can dream all we want, but I know what I would do if I was Comcast, Time Warner, etc and saw this kind of a threat to my lucrative cable TV revenue stream- especially with it dependent on being delivered through "my" cable.

While we're adding items to our wish-list for Apple, I want a breed of cat that can fly and spawns harps with beautiful women playing them.

Seriously, you have to really be into Apple products to buy Apple TV. Why is this crap still around? Even when they change the name it will not take off like other Apple products. Point blank period Apple TV sucks hard.

maybe for you,

i think its a great product, tons of potential especially if it runs apps from the app store.

it will be a gaming console and a entertainment device.

Are you familiar with the term 'bonus?'

The current AppleTV comes with a remote. It does everything I need it to. But sometimes I whip out my iPhone to control it because it's faster. My wife does the same. Or perhaps we use my daughter's iPod. They'll all do it, but the original remote is still sitting there if we need it.

How is any of that a bad thing? I've never thought "this isn't working well!"
