I wonder if this will actually do anything other than make people feel good. I've reported so many spam texts to 7726 but I don't think it does anything.

Either way I'm not touching iOS 16 till at least 16.1. Not after iOS 15... That was a mess

Just took advantage of it! Carrier is Verizon, iOS 16 beta 2 - reported an SMS as junk immediately.
Verizon already supports this with their Call Filter app integrating with iOS Messages app in iOS 15. This isn’t really new.

Some people need to take calls from numbers they don't know for work purposes, so your suggestion is not an ideal one for all users.
Well, the operative word seems to be “option”, which would imply most likely that it’s “opt-in” (though even if it’s opt-out, such people could opt out).

Personally, as someone who doesn’t live in the same area code as my phone number (and haven’t for nearly four years now), I’d kinda like to have the ability to block unknown calls just from my area code. I do not have any legitimate business case for getting calls from unknown calls in my area code (which is a fairly geographically large area code anyway*), and spam callers forge numbers in your area code in an attempt to get you to answer. So such an option would significantly reduce scam calls for me.

Actually, it might be good to expand it to the area codes in your state, that’s a tactic I’ve seen. I lived near the border with another state. I’ve never once gotten a scam call from a phone number listed in the area code just across the state border (never mind that I lived less than four miles away), but I’ve gotten a fair number of scam calls from numbers associated with area codes in the state’s largest city (over a 100 miles away) and from random small towns I’ve never heard of over 150 miles away in the same area code. I’m guessing scammers might be banking on the idea of you having legitimate needs to answer a call from your state’s largest city, because I basically never get scam calls from any of the state’s lesser zip codes (even ones closer to home).

* So I’ll often get spam calls from random podunk towns of less than 1000 in population in a part of the state I’d never been to before. It’s almost never a town or city I’ve visited or lived in, at best maybe I’ve heard of them in TV severe weather coverage.

How do I turn this off? I get so many messages from 2FA, appointment reminders, etc. and the big red button when I delete messages causes me to accidentally report it as spam.

I get it it’s my fault for deleting messages so fast but still. It would be nice to have it not prompt every time I delete a message not in my contacts.

Same problem! :(
