I've never regarded laptops as a personally customisable computer. Buy one at the spec you want and use it. That's it.

If you want to start swapping parts out, go buy a Mac Pro. The smaller and lighter and better the design the MBP will continue to push will mean obviously mean they'll tighten up in other areas.

That was the beauty of the expresscard slot. But Apple saw that well-to-do high schoolers and "creatives" were flocking to the pro for its larger real estate over the macbook/ibook and not really the expresscard slot, and then they came up with that rediculous "1% of users use the expresscard slot" but then again i'd believe it, cause i'd believe that over 50% of photoshop installations are pirated by dumb noobs that do sigs and "photography" by changing around a few sliders.

The expresscard slot was too robust (and expensive) for Apple's majority consumer. Sigh. If only it would have been adopted more we could have seen some of the solutions like the MagmaBox or more eSATA cards at a reasonable price point. But for me its perfect. I don't want a Mac Pro although i've spent some Mac pro money. I want one machine, thats it, no more, and i'm out of the house alot, so I don't mind paying a premium to attain desktop-esque functionality.

Well this is a waste of bandwidth

sorry mate but MovieCutter is right. you are happy with your mac I am happy with my mac. I don't think your point is entirely unjustified I just think it is 1. just your opinion 2. useless information except for an opinion poll which this is not (why didn't you post a poll? it would have made more sense of your post.) 3. a waste of bandwidth.

have fun with you computer I hope it brings you much pleasure and satisfaction in the fullness of time.

Ahh just another dude looking for self-assurance.

First of all, you have an out-dated machine. Lets face it, it's old, and slower. Heck, a 13" uMBP has better features and is a more advanced machine.

Unibody construction, LED backlighting, glossy display (better color reproduction, sharper images), 8-bit panels, 1066FSB, newer chipsets, DDR3, 7hour batteries, glass mulitouch, etc. The list goes on.

So keep telling yourself you have a better machine, I'm sure you do!!!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Sounds like to me that the OP is justifying his purchase and if given any chance at a new mbp.. He'd do it without hesitation

With every new macbook pro version that comes out, i get on my knee's and thank god that I was smart enough to buy my Early 2008 17" MBP.

Benefits:
Easy upgradability
Good graphics card, (Aside from the NVidia debacle)
DVI out! No massive HDCP issues.
Express card! Hey, i can use my OWN card reader adaptor, Esata Card, and pretty much any other card i want.
And I got a multi-touch trackpad.

Oh, and did i mention that this version has ROOM inside to install STANDARD sized drives and parts that don't cost a fortune? 500GB, 1TB hard drive? No problem. And how bout and internal blu ray drive? No sweat!

I just look at the new unibodies and aside from some external cosmetic stuff, (Which i think is terribly ugly.) it's a lot of bad moves on Apples part. Making the computer a few mm's to short to install standard sized drives?! Display port? What a pile! As a pro user, i know exactly why display port sucks major ass. I feel sorry for those who are handicapped with it. And, now with the exclusion of the Express card slot?!

Seriously. I know there will be unibody fans. But aside from some fancy marketing gimmick about how the design is more sturdy and has better battery life, I think the new designs are terrible!

Any thoughts?

I dont have a 17" macbook. So I have no axe to grind. But your post resembles this my friend.
Sour Grapes

Sorry, forgot about the crappy glass displays. I feel for the 15" guys too! For me, battery life is nice. But, i can't remember the last time i was doing a marathon session on my MBP where i needed 5+ hrs of battery life.

My whole life having laptops, i've been reasonably close to an outlet. So the battery thing is fluff to me.

Then get an iMac for Pete's sake... it's only 20 pounds. Thanks for feeling for me :). I could not be happier with my brilliant display . No nasty reflections because I look straight at it, and the colors are superb. Not to mention I got to watch 3 full length movies on the plane with this last month.:D

Maybe I am the only person that doesn't really mind the whole 8600M GT thing. My MBP has one, and if it fails, it fails! Apple will nicely fix it for free. No problem. People here make it seem like once it breaks, the computer is garbage and can never be used. And if it breaks more than once, or if I have more than 2 repairs, I am sure Apple will replace my MBP for free. I am not worried at all.

For the most part that is true. But I think the worrying part is what happens when the GPU fails after the 3 years and it hasn't failed to qualify as a lemon? Some might say, well after 3 years, time to get a new computer anyway but some look for their computer to last them a long time. There are still people who use the old PowerBook's.

If my MBP dies after 3 years (even though I won't keep it that long) and the GPU fails, I am sure Apple will fix the computer. The issue is big, and I am sure people will have failures well after the 3 year mark. When my MBP dies after 4 years, there really is no point in keeping it. I would just sell it and buy a new comp. But, I understand what you are saying. I guess it really depends on how long you are keeping your computer.

Thats like saying my girl is perfect (aside from being naggy, overbearing, obesse, controlling, abusive, foul mouthed...etc).

good example

doesn't anyone else think that this just stinks of someone who is just trying to validate themselves?

He didn't upgrade her to the next model. Maybe he's happy with his lot.

Wow, a lot of hate posted people here. And, a lot of mistakes. Many people seem to not know that much about apple products, (including my own current MBP model.)

Overall, i'm just stating my opinion. I didn't realize that it was a crime. And to reply to those who think i don't have the money to upgrade and that i would "upgrade in a second" are wrong. I said in my original post that I would not be upgrading any time soon from my current model. It works great. Why would i even want to upgrade?! Spend another $2.5K+ for a machine thats martinally better? Are you serious?

Apple fans crack me up. Its always the latest and greatest only.

Overall, I think the unibody design is much superior to the older alu body design. It looks sharp and is more solid then the prior model.

I own the late 08 unibody model and think that apple really hit it out of the part for this model.

what I don't like is the fact that apple (in the newer models) no longer has a user replaceable battery. What the unibody models have over older models is that the drives and ram are easily replaceable. Before it was major surgery now its fairly easy.

The dual GPU, DDR3 ram, and FSB bus definitely make the unibody model a great machine.

While you're happy with your MBP that's great, but that doesn't mean anyone else who bought a new model wrong, or anything. They're happy with their models and you're happy with yours.

There were some mistakes made by users, but you didn't really address any of the concerns except that you have money.

My thought. You don't like 'em. Don't buy one. I just got a Macbook Pro, I love it. Be thankful you have such a bevy of choices when it comes time to buy a computer. Other than that, a pretty useless thread, eh?

Good for you man, let's see if you'll still think the same when your 8600M GT dies on you.

This issue alone curses all non-uMBP (except the early ati x1600-based models). No way any laptop with a nvidia 8x00 gpu is worth considering at all!!

Cheers
