Let's keep analyzing and debating the relevance of a CABLE when Apple themselves have said that the industry is making a shift towards WIRELESS data and charging.

Me thinks some of the lightening cable team should have been working more on Map data ;) (yeah - I just went there)

Never has so much nonsense been put forwards. CRC is not a security feature, it's not a form of authentication and couldn't be used as such. Put quite simply it's a method of spotting errors in transmission.

I've seen nothing anywhere that suggests any good cause to say that there is any form of authentication or security built into the cable. It would appear that the FUD-mungers are having their day once more.

and...

i have this new cable, new phone, and a new car (hyundai ix35)

somewhere there is a "lack of compatibility"...

it just keeps making the charge noise every five seconds and nothing else happens...

tried two cables, same issue...

annoying...

The same thing happened to my sister with her 4s, she got cheap knock off wall adapters and they showed charging but the % never went up on either of our phones. Must be your car?

Not necessarily. As long as its justified which I think a lot of that court case was. There was evidence of blatant copying But to make a fkn cable with security measures. Thats taking the piss out of the consumers a bit. And for a fan boy to then get a hard on about it and hope that they take whoever to court is a joke.

Nobody has made a cable with security features. CRC is not a security feature it's a data integrity feature.

Good move by Apple. Hopefully they can prevent others from making knock off cables and selling them for a lower price. They should sue anyone who does this.

Absolutely correct. If other companies can make crappy cables, then they might damage Apple's phones, and people will blame Apple, tie up the phone lines at Apple Care, and cost Apple money looking for warranty replacements.

Even if that doesn't happen, they will siphon money away from Apple's accessory sales.

Apple will, with their revolutionary chipped cables, be able to provide the best user experience in the world, all the while receiving the profits which are their just due. These crap cable makers should be sued if they try to make cables that fit Apple products.

But when you realize that would have equated to "Shouldn't have released the iPhone until the adapters were ready to go" you can see that maybe Apple did do the right thing. Apple threw its resources at iPhone production, it would have been silly to shift some of those resources to allow production of adapters to catch up.

A month ago I would have felt the same way. My thoughts were that as long as they were available in a reasonable amount of time, what the heck. But as it stands now I likely won't have one until November, nearly two months after I received the iPhone. Not cool.

I guess the next logical step for :apple: would be to replace all usb ports on their Mac's with lightning ports so that we would need to buy adapters for all of our usb devices too. Just imagine how much thinner they could make our MBP's, MBA's and iMacs with this kind of innovation!

So from this we can deduce that there is no security feature here at all, only CRC checks for data integrity and a chip which can store identification information about the type of connector or peripheral (needed so the phone can decide how to configure its pins). This is just going to take a little time for manufacturers to get used to before cables etc. start to come out. It's just a bit more complex than a straight wires only cable so is going to take some time for 3rd party stuff to come out and at first it is going to be more expensive. In a years time it will be common place and the price will have come right down.

Missed the tone entirely. I can't help but laugh. Thanks!

Wouldn't be a bad idea for lower data rate devices. TB is expensive and this would make the cables for things like Ethernet a lot cheaper. Not saying they should ditch all the USB ports but replacing one or two may not be a bad idea.

Didn't apple require licensing to make the old dock connector as well?

I am not seeing this as something new, from what I understood you were required to be part of the MFI program to legally make cables or dock connector devices in the past too. That said, I may not understand the MFI program, or patent (or otherwise) protection on the old 30 pin port.

Apple Store dadeland and Apple Store Lincoln Road here in Miami have an entire wall full of lightning to USB cables... Yet they're hard to find in other places? I have a feeling Apple isn't distributing these very evenly according to demand!

What time of day did you see an "entire wall" of them?

My local Apple store has about 20 pegs full of them every morning. They are all gone by evening. I happened to be close to the store before noon, so I popped inside and bought a couple last week. I spent about 15 minutes looking at the new iPods, and about a dozen lightning cables left the store during that time.

Get over it

Your device comes with the cable, you can get adapters for old cables.
Everyone said the cable/port was outdated wanted smaller ones. Now they've done it, all you do is complain. Get over it already.

Dadeland was around lunch time on a Wednesday; I went there to pick up an extra lightning cable as I felt weird only having one.

Lincoln Road was at 11AM on a Saturday. I happened to be biking around Miami Beach and figured I'd drop by to see if they had any 30 pin to lightning adapters. Nope, but plenty of USB to lightnings.

CRC is not "authentication" or "DRM." CRC is a simple checksum. It makes sure that data doesn't get corrupted during transfer.

A chip is simply necessary to make a reversible cable with adaptive pins. Please stop perpetuating this "authentication chip" ********. Apple is clever enough to know that a hypothetical "secret chip" would never prevent third party manufacturers from producing copies.

Thanks for being informed and reasonable... a quality that seems to be lacking these days. ;)

This isn't a conspiracy. CRC is not an anticompetitive 'security feature'. It only makes sense that a cable capable of CHANGING IT'S USE have basic CRC abilities. Think about it... with this ability, your cable could have the ability to automatically detect issues (cable is crimped, twisted, etc) and possibly find another better data wire to use, or it could reduce the speed of transmission on the data wire to compensate for interference. It could even tell your computer about the issue so that you were informed.

There were PLENTY of unlicensed accessories for the 30 pin. You could get many of them on Deal Extreme.

One of my favorites as a cable that has a dock connector on one end, and a usb plug and audio plug on the other. Plug one connector into the phone and get charging, data and audio all at once. It was great in the car. (picture attached)

This cable didn't seem to be licensed. It came in a plain plastic bag, had no brand name, nor the "Made for iPhone" logo that companies slap on officially licensed stuff.

Either that's sarcasm.. or congratulations, you've won biggest iDouche of the day award. To claim your prize, please climb up a tall building then jump off. :D

Not everyone has forgotten Microsoft's $150 million "investment" to you some years back. Don't forget who helped keep you around.

Wow, people still believe this?

For the record, Apple was cash rich when the 'investment' occurred (check it out).

Curiously, Microsoft made other large payments as well during the same time frame (check the filings)

Even more curious, was that during the same time frame the long standing lawsuit between Apple and Microsoft over windows, shortcuts, and mouse operations was settled.

But keep on believing that Microsoft 'Bailed out' Apple

I don't get why people think that they can't use their lightening cable adopter. I use the cigarette lighter with USB to charge my iphone 5.
