Developers hoping to attend Apple's 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, California can now apply for a chance to purchase a ticket, with Apple's lottery having kicked off at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Tickets are priced at $1,599.

Tickets will be doled out using a random selection process, implemented because in past years, tickets sold out within a matter of minutes. Approximately 5,000 attendees are expected at the conference, which will also be attended by Apple executives and more than 1,000 Apple engineers.

The 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference will start on Monday, June 5, and will last through Friday, June 9. Apple announced the conference in mid-February this year, as it is the first that will be held outside of San Francisco in many years. In 2017, WWDC will take place at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California, which should be a welcome change for many developers as it is less expensive to secure accommodations.

Apple says that it is working with the city of San Jose and local businesses to plan "very special experiences" around San Jose during the week of the conference, so this year's event promises to be unique.

Along with the ticket lottery, Apple is now accepting WWDC scholarship applications for students and STEM organization members who don't have the funds to attend the conference. Scholarship applicants, who must be at least 13 years old, have a chance to earn both tickets and accommodations for the 2017 event.

Apple is asking prospective scholarship attendees to share a visually interactive scene created in Swift Playgrounds that can be experienced in three minutes. Swift Playgrounds for iPad or Xcode on macOS must be used, and Apple will judge applications on technical accomplishment, creativity of ideas, and the content of written responses.

Apple's ticket lottery will end on Friday, March 31 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, while Apple will take scholarship applications until Sunday, April 2 at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Lottery winners are likely to be notified on April 3 by 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time as that is when Apple will begin charging credit cards.

Developers and students who are not selected to purchase a ticket will be able to watch both the keynote event and sessions with engineers through the Apple Developer website and through the WWDC app for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.

I'm so gay and can not wait to watch the conference online. I hope it will be better than past boring years. I hope OSX and ios will not loose anymore features. I still thing there should be a Pro version on each platform.

Apple is gonna go big this year guys... with all new.... TOP VIEW EMOJI's!!!

Can't innovate my ass!
Hold on. Last time My comment was deleted because I wrote Happy and you can write @$$ ??How does it work here.

Funny how it's random picks but the same people seem to always be there each and every year.
Most of the people I used to see there every year haven't gone the past 3 years because they've lost out on the lotteries. There almost seems to be a reverse loyalty bias in the "randomness".

I don't see that at all. I don't know anyone who has been able to go 3 years in a row. 2 years in a row, max.

Of course, the TOP developers don't really have a lottery. They'll allow say 5-10 from each company who makes the top apps, and the company in turn can figure out who goes with their own lottery or other means.

I'm a alittle surprised they don't make use of their donut hole, by hosting the thing out in the garden, with 360deg of displays visible to everyone. Make a bash of it. They could invite 3x as many people in the space they have.

Wow... $1599.00 USD.. is a lot of money to me. Mabe one day when I will be a rich man I can attend a conference..

hmm. Will it be Leap Year at WWDC and apple actually update any of their mac's this decade?

we are seriously in WTF mode and people need to speak up. Time to bolt from the Mac line if Apple doesn't show serious new models/refreshes across the board to market fast.

I've been waiting for Sierra to hit .6. Guess that's not gunna happen. Soon it'll be time for a whole new OS again. Back to square one. I wish MacOS returned to paid upgrades every few years instead of annual automatically downloaded anthills.

I sure hope there's a new Mac Pro announced at WWDC17.

Not going to happen. But I think you seemingly already knew the answer to this. WWDC is primarily for developers and is orientated towards the conference side of things, as it about the software and demoing.

As cool as that would be, wasn't there a story on MR or maybe AppleInsider that said Apple hopes to finish construction in April, but would take 6 months to move staff there, so October? Not sure the logistics, but my guess is WWDC is too soon to hold at Apple Park

The idea is that people who attend (including the students) are spending other people's money. It's about normal in the scheme of conferences... last engineering conference I went to was $1000, in a mediocre city too. Though conference fees are only a part of the total expense, add airfare, $150/night in hotels, $70/day in food... I think a week worked out to be around $3000.

$1600 * 5000 attendees = $8m!

They make in one conference more than a man dreams to make all his life!!!

And many shorter concerts or performances make even more money from those attending.

If it doesn't happen then, the MacPro is dead.

The current gen MacPro was released at WWDC 2013 (wow - 4 years ago). If it doesn't happen then, it's not going to happen.
