My first mac, after being absent in the mac space since the Apple //e and Mac Classic. Shortly after I upgraded to a dual Power PC G4 (that I still have and fire up from time to time, to remind me of simpler times).

20 years already! I encouraged my mom to buy one of these. Was disappointed by its super-slow performance, though. I did self-install a RAM upgrade on it to try and speed up its performance. Worked reliably for a few years, and still have it! Would probably boot right up if I tried.

I just bought a G4 mac mini *today* off Facebook marketplace! I've been looking for one because I thought I'd be run to try and run OS 9.2.2 on it - I've never owned or really used classic mac os.
You wanted to wish it a happy birthday in person :)

I seem to recall ordering one when it was first released but, due to high demand in the US, it was delayed in the UK. Other uses for my funds meant I never bought into “Mac” back then. It would be 2024 before I bought my first Mac. Amazing that a little delay turned into such a long time for Me & Mac.

Thinking about this Mac makes me so sentimental. I remember when it was introduced. I can't imagine working with a G4 processor with 40GB of disk space now! But at the time, every product Steve introduced was magical. 😀

I remember vividly wanting this Mac when it was announced. I was 20 and running my own website and hosting my own Apple news related podcast.

I turn 41 this year.

Now I feel old. Thanks a lot MacRumors.

20 years ago the Mini was certainly small but required powering by a brick

Crazy how they now pack the whole lot in something so small! (Also how I have yet to hear the fan a single time in the M4 model or the M2 I had before!)

I used one as an edit machine before I got my first PowerMac. 1.42GHz, and I took the top case off, got a third party PATA adapter and installed it into a gutted Quadra 660AV case with a 3.5" 7200RPM hard drive and a full sized DVD burner running off the Quadra PSU. Was a good time

I keep a 2009 Mac Mini Server on a shelf; few years back I installed..a newer OS on it with OLCP (I believe). Tripped me out that it still worked and ran pretty decent. I'll have to look for the power cord and mouse/keyboard; I've since moved and those items are in a box in storage. Be fun to spin it up again.

...The original Mac mini featured a PowerPC G4 processor available in 1.25 GHz and 1.42 GHz configurations, an ATI Radeon 9200 GPU, 56MB of DDR SDRAM (expandable to 1GB), and 40GB or 80GB of HDD storage. Connectivity included two USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 400 port, and DVI output. It shipped with Mac OS X Panther and iLife '05. The Mac mini's aluminum and polycarbonate casing measured just 6.5 x 6.5 x 2 inches—far smaller than the bulky tower PCs and even many contemporary Macs of the time...

FireWire! You had your day. I was organizing my boxes of older cables the other day. It pained me to throw away my FW cable. :(

I've had multiple

- iMac
- iBook
- MBP
- MBA

And one MB & one Power Mac tower

The Mac mini M4 is likely the 1st one I'd likely buy.
