With all the quirks showing up in the M1 family of processors, I am glad I cancelled my Studio order. I can wait until the M2 or M3 come out at this point.

With all the hub options out there, my 14" M1 Max with 64GB of memory and 4TB SSD has tons more power than my old 2013 MacPro with 128GB of ram and a 2TB SSD and can be connected to all of my legacy equipment. My fully loaded 16" Intel MBPro can also use the same hubs.

The lead times are closing in on having deliveries after the M2 models are announced.

I tend to think it is location dependent for what you mention here. I can go to my local Best Buy here stateside and purchase one of the available units there, walking out with it today. A friend of mine in Canada went to their local store and purchased one immediately, too, fairly recently.

Not a 64gb M1 Max they didn't - you might be able to buy one of the off the shelf M1 Pro units but the rest have been impossible to come back since launch. Best Buy don't even sell CTO machines.

Well that's funny. Just got a text 5 minutes ago from Apple. My order now "delivers" June 28-Jul 11 instead of May 9-16 instead of April 13-20. This is getting brutal as my 2016 MBP can't even run Photoshop any longer. M1 Max 64GB 2TB

The last few weeks? Availability has been nil since launch. We've sold systems at the start of November that Apple finally fulfilled in mid-March! This only made things worse.
No totally true. Availability has been almost continuous for default configurations much of this year. It’s the custom ones that were/are taking forever to get.

Ordered a MBP 14 in May with a shipping date of 8-20 June. Will be interesting to see if this time frame holds, if it gets delayed further or, fingers crossed ships sooner.
Currently tied to a desk with an M1 mini, so really need a laptop. I thought about buying refurbished, but as this is my first MacBook I wanted it to be fully new.
The portability of a MBP is going to rock your world! Even just being able to use it lying in bed or sitting on the couch is a delight. And even a 16" is so lightweight you can take it anywhere.

I recommend an InCase bag for them (https://goincase.com.au/collections/bags), they are strong, long lasting, loads of pockets and compartments, really well designed, and look pretty good IMO. I have the larger day pack, which has space for charger, extension cord and double adapter (for sharing a power point with someone), lunch, water bottle, pen and paper pads, etc. I'm on my second one now in many years, as the first one did eventually get ratty around the arm straps after years of daily use.

Do you want to check that? - Apple currently saying July even for base SKUs. Furthermore we've had 50 16-inch M1 Max base SKUs on order, on a priority list with Apple since launch day and they've been able to fulfil 3. The other base SKUs in 14-inch and 16-inch have been seen more but even they couldn't be consider "readily available".

Ordered a 16" M1 Max (64GB/1TB) late March.
Initial delivery early May.
Just had the email to say its now early July!

Ordered a 16" MBP February 9.

Initial delivery estimate was early April.

Then early May.

Now it's expected in late June.
Exactly the same here (type, orderdate and eta's). Hope my current MBP will last, because battery is giving problems and is thickening already. Something about eggs and one basket. Not good, if you want to show reliability to customers and stock-holders. Too bad Apple is the sole supplier of M1 and MacOS, and their devices look good too. Else I would have cancelled already.

As of when I wrote that, 16s where available for immediate pickup in the two markets I keep an eye on. About a week prior they seemed to disappear until I checked again to write that response.

Every time I periodically checked prior to that with the exception of a period of time in January (I think is was January), they were available. Pretty much the same for the 14 until about a month ago or maybe a few weeks.

My 16 was definitely available for pickup last December when I got it. As well as my iPhone 13 Pro Max, that was not listed as being available. I got lucky on that one.

I get it that people are struggling to get custom orders, but in my corner of the US, base models haven’t been an issue.

Hi!
Same situation. Ordered a 16" M1 Max (64GB/2TB) on March 24 in Italy, about the same delivery date as expected in early May.

Arrived email from Apple on April 29, 2022 with subject line: "Your shipping date has been changed.
Delivery date pushed back to June 24, 2022."

I also confirm your message. Same situation for me as well.
I currently have a 15" late '13 MBP that... still does its job (although the fans scream from morning to night, working with a 34" external screen).

I changed the battery I bought on iFixt myself not too long ago.
The original one had swollen up like a balloon and didn't make the trackpad work anymore)
Anyway it was already the second one, since for a spark from the power supply, I had to change logic board and battery... .
The current one is the third battery but... it already shows some problems (maybe the replacement is not of excellent quality... ).

Certain policies and delays make me want to try other solutions!

My fingers are crossed! :)

All we can do is to have “a little” patience...
Wait times spanning "months" makes your receipt of the machine closer to the release of the M2 MBP, despite the fact rumor has it those machines won't debut until 2023. Nobody wants to drop $4k on a new Mac only to see its replacement hit the market less than a year later. That isn't cool.

All this makes me feel like we are NOT going to see an M2 Pro/Max MacBook Pro in Q4 2022. 2 year cycle, wether that was always Apple's silicon plan or not.

I hope it is a 2-year cycle. It lessens the impact of buyer's remorse. Regardless of how powerful the machine is (e.g., a 32-core GPU M1 Max), no one wants to see their purchase replaced in less than a year after their purchase, especially if they buy into that model not too long after it's release (within the first 6 months or so).

I speak from experience here. I remember when the Mac IIvx was first announced and was very excited about it. That was October 1992 when I needed a new Mac. I got most of my Mac news from MacUser magazine back in those days, so I needed to wait until the December 1992 issue to read MacUser's take on the new machine. That got me hooked, but I still wanted to do a little research before spending my heard earned cash (being an engineering student at that time) on the expensive (for me) new machine. I finally pulled the plug and dropped about $3,000 (in 1993 dollars) on the machine. Less than 1 year after my purchase, in October 1993, Apple killed the IIvx and replaced it with the machine it should have been -- the Quadra 650. I remember paying Apple another $1,000 for a motherboard swap, making my IIvx a much more enjoyable machine -- something you can no longer do with Apple computers of today. In short, I wasn't happy at all with how fast Apple replaced that machine, and I still remember my feelings about it to this very day.

The M1 Max is a very powerful chip which could easily last 2 years (or more) without feeling old or slow. Nevertheless, Apple is pressured by competitors to stay on top of the Apple Silicon game by releasing new chips which keep those competitor's scrambling. So if it is less than a 2-year cycle, it probably will be because Apple wants to show the world that it didn't simply have the fastest chips for a year or two, but that it can continue that dominance long-term.

@JDW I totally agree. On top of that I'd like add that the leap from M1 Max to M2 Max is doubtful to be as impressive or noticeable as the leap from i7 to M1 Max. Which, perhaps, relieves a bit of the pressure off Apple to deliver every year.

I also hope that if they do have a 2 year chip cycle they have an even longer design cycle. I love everything about my 14" MBP and don't know if I could honestly imagine a better iteration in the form of a complete redesign lol!

But again, there's no way you're talking about the top end base model M1 Max almost never been available for next day delivery online - and if you're not looking at Apple stores then only base models are available as your average shop doesn't do CTOs.

We could have genuinely sold hundreds of M1 Max base SKU machines for more than retail if we could get our hands on them. I bought in $150,000 worth of 64gb machines that became available and they sold out in 3 days at retail price. M1 Max and 64gb machines - the actual desirable models are just not available, anywhere, in the world.

I ordered a dell precision 5760 mobile workstation and waited for 8 weeks by the end of Feb 2022. Just a few months before the new 5770 announced ???
Just ordered a basic configs precision 5770 on 04/25, finished 04/27 at Wistron's Chengdu factory, and arrived today in my hands.
That's a super surprise cause from 04/30 to 05/04 are the holidays.

??? So you think M2/M3 are coming while they still have issues supplying M1? Never going to happen. There are issues and it doesn't matter what the chipset nomenclature is. If they can't get us one what makes you think they will get you another?

I don't see that happening at all.

*What quirks?

A superb response to a rather odd post. I too want to know "what quirks" because I've watched just about every single YouTube video and read most articles on all the M1 Macs, and there are few things that I would consider a "showstopper quirk." For an amazingly detailed set of videos on the topic, I can't recommend Max Tech on YouTube enough.

As to the release of the M2 models, I suspect the Air might get the M2 this year, but I highly doubt anything else. The 14" and 16" MBP probably won't get an M2 for at least another year, which would be Q2 2023. And I believe that is the right timing too because a lot of people are still waiting for the exist M1 model MBP to ship, so you wouldn't want an M2 model to ship only a few insanely short months after you finally get your hands on that brand spanking new M1 MBP!

MBP 14” 24 core Max chip 1TB ssd and 64GB ram - ordered on Feb 3rd. Was due to be delivered in March, now has been delayed 1-15 June.
I am a bit miffed at Apple not updating me or letting me know anything. I called before the first delivery window as I was suspect that the order had not shipped and I had not been charged yet - Apple rep assured me that it would be fine and deliver on time (Spoiler : he was wrong)
Now I have called up and had a rep try to convince me that the best thing to do would be to cancel my order and reorder - I think this is pure insanity! I understand that if I ordered a new machine today it might have a shorter wait time than from the 3rd of Feb. But the idea that it would arrive BEFORE the machine I have already ordered in Feb is pure madness.
Also I had the apple rep talking about a “goodwill gesture” that will be received after the laptop has been delivered but this is not going to satisfy me. I told apple if you want to get a satisfied customer and you haven’t started building this machine yet put more SSD into it and I will be happy. Apple said no (but I dont really know why as this would be a simple and easy thing to do and would really make me happy about it)
Anyway I dont know if there is any advantage in cancelling at this stage.. Maybe a new 15” raiser blade but I bet that there are mad delays on that one also!

Your post inspired me to send an email to Tim Cook. A larger SSD is too much to ask, but perhaps something more realistic would work. I proposed to him that even though Chinese lockdowns are largely outside Apple's control, it still might encourage Mac buyers who face multi-month wait times if Apple could offer a goodwill gesture like discounting AppleCare+ or waving the first year's $150 subscription fee. If someone is paying top dollar for an Apple product and is forced to wait months, regardless of reason, having a perk for waiting patiently is not only the nice thing to do, it's also the right thing to do.

Yeah, I think I'm going to send an email today, too.

I ordered my new machine in February, knowing that my partner was starting grad school in April, and she'd be getting my 2017 MacBook Pro to use for school. Now we're three months later, the shipment has been delayed twice, and she has an upcoming residency where she's going to need to take the only laptop we have on the road with her.

The least they could do would be to throw in complimentary AppleCare. That literally costs them almost nothing over the life of the machine if it's built well. Or give us a year of free AppleTV+ starting now. Again, something that costs them almost nothing. Or double my iCloud storage.
