Yes but there's no better smartphone than iPhone. All other systems are worthless junk.

If that is true, then the vast majority of people buy worthless junk. More than three people choose worthless junk for every person who gets a freebie iPhone at Wall*Mart. Same for the $99 iPhone, and especially true for the iPhones priced like flagship phones.

This is why we're becoming more stupid and lazy. First off, are we so beholden to GPS stuff anymore that we just throw common sense out the window? Were there not signs/barriers screaming "you can't go this way"? You have to take GPS and other digital maps with a bit of salt. Use your head (or learn how to read a real map).

Secondly, that close to the airport, were there no signs pointing them to the terminal? Or are they just the sort of young, hipster tech-minded types who'll always trust/believe the stuff on their phone screen vs. "old school" posted signage placed there by the airport itself?

:D

This was 100% avoidable, and 110% stupid.

Let me guess, they only use Yelp and Urbanspoon to find places eat, while walking past dozens of great restaurants because they can't lift their heads up from their phones. I know the type...

I guarantee you if they weren't relying solely on their iPhone for "directions", they wouldn't have done this. They would've seen the terminal signs posted as they neared the airport. This is the kind of stuff that happens when we just turn our brains off and rely solely on "tech" for things we used to know how to do (I have three stories from my real life, regarding people I know, doing something very similar).

Yes, Apple needs to fix/update their map info (I've got some wrong stuff posted around my area as well). But I'm also going to shoulder a bit of the responsibility as well, and not drive through a store's plate glass window (or over a cliff) just because my phone or GPS says I should.

Look up, open your eyes and use your heads, people. It wasn't that long ago that we all got around really well without this stuff. Don't let it become a crutch, and your sole means of getting around.

And it doesn't matter if they were in an unfamiliar city/airport. I've been to tons of strange cities and airports over the years, returning rental cars or whatever. But I can read signs, and I've never driven onto restricted space. And if I saw I was going to, guess what? I'd let the posted, on-site signage overrule the info from my GPS, end of story. Especially these days. t's a wonder they didn't get shot! You can't just barrel onto restricted airport property anymore like you're in a 70's cop show or something.

The ads come when you search for things. If you want your business listed, you gotta pay Google. Just like an ad.

That is correct. It is also sad. Before Google came along, its competitors put paid listings first in a search. Google's claim to fame was clearly separating paid listings by removing them to the side. Now Google is becoming the competitors it beat.

Google Maps do have these same problems from time to time, but the big difference is that Google actually fixes things when you report them. Apple still hasn't fixed a single error I reported a year ago. I'm sure they fix things in the US and other big markets, but Google fixes reported errors in days even here in Finland.

In 's-hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, All hospitals are still on there old - 1 year+, location. Complained many times. Also the city complained. No change what so ever.

People might die due to hospitals being on wrong places.

Interesting, here in the US, when someone is sick or injured enough that a speedy arrival at a hospital is the difference between life and death, they tend to call 911 and get a ride in an ambulance staffed with medical techs and a driver who knows from personal knowledge where the hospitals.

Feel sorry for folks over there that your medical system is so shoddy that you have to drive yourself and it seems they hide the locations of hospitals to thoroughly that one has to use a maps app to find them. You should take to your government about that.

According to the airport's chief of operations, Melissa Osborn, out-of-town drivers have driven onto airport property twice in the past week, crossing the runway and driving directly to the airport ramp side of the passenger terminal.

I'm sorry, I cannot stop laughing. It's like a deleted scene from "Lampoons National Vacation"

"These folks drove past several signs. They even drove past a gate. None of that cued them that they did something inappropriate," she said.

Seriously, if you disconnect yourself from driving because you don't have reserve attention capacity to listen to electronic navigation instruction while following the rules of the road, comprehend signs, and make common sense judgement - shouldn't this be grounds to forfeit the right to drive?

Regardless of how accurate navigation gets, if it tells me to drive into a lake, I'm not doing it - and yet people have. Have we become this disengaged?

Clearly the issue is with the location of the POI pin being on a runway (basically in the center of the airport image). Also service roads on the airport property should not be listed as public roads. If the pin is moved to one of the terminal buildings and the roads are change to private, then the navigation would route correctly. Simple fix.

There is the catch. If the source gazetteer lists the taxiway as a public road why shouldn't Apple etc consider it a valid road to direct folks to. Particularly if that gazetteer was provided by a govt entity.

And as the article states NO ONE was told by the system to drive onto the runway. They made that choice themselves.

So tired the of Apple Maps 'jokes'. Honestly, their maps have gotten significantly better. There is a huge amount of roads that not only are hard to map, but changing as well. Apple has problems, sure, so does Google, so does Bing, and so does MapQuest. Who cares. Report the issue, and move on with life.

Seriously...this isn't an excuse for Apple's poor map directions, but an airport that's large enough for a 737 is typically barricaded by lots of fencing; not a simple gate that can apparently be driven by. Seems weird.

Things are different up in Alaska....

That said, these errors are just a huge (very high publicity) lawsuit waiting to happen to Apple (imagine if someone had driven in front of an airliner taking off or landing on that runway & caused a crash)...Apple needs to get a better process in place for a timely update of errors people send them and at this point it still doesn't appear that's been done (doesn't matter who is the source of their data - it's Apple and their brand is taking the hit in all this).

Hopefully Tim takes this opportunity to look at how the fix (process) is going and gets it updated as a top priority. Steve would be peeling the paint off the walls with his language, of subordinates and partners, at this point - and he'd have made sure a real fix was in place by now.

Apple's brand doesn't need this damage. Once something really terrible happens to someone because they were following Apple maps which gave bad info, the product which is already down will never recover (it's like Apple Management doesn't realize this). JMHO...

What a shame.

Apple under Tim Cook is a mess.

Tim Cook is incompetent and needs to go.

Apple's Board of Directors have got to wake up and start looking for a replacement CEO ASAP.

Really?!? You can't understand why the default maps program used by millions of phones that instructs people to drive onto airplane runways is news???

It's like a nonsense article, a joke. I mean, it's one runway, in one state. It's an issue within an app, with lots of issues. It's hardly breaking, interesting, or thought-provoking news.

"News and rumours you care about" is getting more fictitious by the post.

That's right, they should never report anything where it shows the almighty Apple being flawed.

What you've done there, is assumed - and you have assumed incorrectly.

So what's the Problem?

If it saves time, looks like a great shortcut. Just remember to look Left, Right, and up before crossing.

Or it does but Apple has thousands of reports to go through so yours isn't fixed in five seconds like some folks think theirs simply must be.
Am I not allowed to point out a negative?
It isn't just me, and I don't expect five seconds change. But main POI's should be resolved faster. Seaworld in San Diego was one example I mentioned and is the largest tourist attraction in San Diego, which is the second largest city in California. Per this morning, 3 months later, you'll still end up at the wrong side of the bay. Don't get me wrong, I am not blindly following any GPS and I use Maps much more than Google Maps but this should get a faster turn around time. Plus I am not the only one complaining about turn around times...

I have to respectfully disagree here. This is an international airport, that has airliners takeoff/land on this runway.

It could easily (since people are driving across the runway following Apple Maps already) result in an airliner crash when timed right - which would be a PR end for Apple Maps and massive PR mess for Apple in general....and it would all land (in the public's eyes) as Apple's fault.

This is very relevant to this site and hopefully folks at Apple see it as well (this could blow up in their faces so easily...they need to fix this ASAP).

I recall, back when Apple Maps made its debut (and we were denied Google Maps on our iPhones for a few months), I complained loudly about how Apple Maps sucked in comparison to Google Maps. And I don't even live in Alaska.

There were, of course (as is always the case on this site's forums) dozens of Apple defenders rushing to explain to me why I should no longer have my choice of map apps.

This article made me chuckle. Why the religious die-hards insist that my iPhone should only use an Apple product as my map, I'll never really understand, but it became a moot point several minutes after the new Google Maps app became available. It's still much better, by the way, and thanks very much.

Fanbois, save your breath. The oxygen is wasted upon you.

after reviewing some of your other posts, I have a hard time understanding why you are on this forum or why you even use (if that is true) apple products.

Funny how the incompetence and poor design continues at Apple as it has been the past few years. They'll keep riding the iPhone same old thing device until the market shifts and suddenly no one is using iPhones anymore.

Google wouldn't give iOS users turn by turn navigation at all. The only reason they have it now is to appear the "better" alternative to Apple Maps. I've had Google maps give me insane directions also, Apple's just getting all the press because of how poorly they came out of the gates.

The last time I used it to get to WPAFB Google maps insisted my destination was a Citgo gas station outside the main gate. So, yeah, Google maps does stupid sh** too.

So tired the of Apple Maps 'jokes'.

Then maybe apple should remove the jokes from its maps...

but until it does, it deserves to be the butt of every joke for a jack ass move like this. and it deserves to be a bigger joke in that now this got all this press attention, and it STILL is in their maps. If they can;t fix this immediately (and they have not) they are idiots and deserve to be the butt of everything Leno and Letterman 9and members of this forum) throw at them...

don't be such a fanboi- when apple is wrong they are wrong, and directing someone to drive down an active runway is wrong. and VERY funny. as much as you don't want your precious multi-billion dollar company to be laughed at, it is their own fault. get over it.
