People have driven into rivers and lakes even in the days of standalone GPS. Heck, they even fished out two submerged cars in Oklahoma last week, suspected to have driven off a boat launch and into a lake 40+ years ago. They didn't have a GPS, and yet met unfortunate ends.

It was Oklahoma-no mystery

I don't know what's more annoying the people defending apple or the people who are shocked that people are defending apple on an Apple site. As if this was Google maps, fandroids wouldn't be defending Google?

I am finding the timing of this to be a bit suspicious. Maps have been out over a year and I'm sure there was someone going to this airport before now. These stories somehow only happen when theres a new iPhone out.

Regrettably this story is totally plausible. You can just drive out onto the runway from the float plane / private plane side of the airport. I just drove over there to verify.... Although, when I chose ROUTE in the map app from my current location (my office is a few miles away) an error pops up and says "Directions not available - A route could not be determined between these locations." For the airport official to say you have to drive past several gates and warnings, that was a bit disingenuous. Yes, there are a few signs that say Airport traffic only, duhh, and there are gates at the end of each street, but the one I drove up to just opened for me before I even reached it.

Juli Juli Juli...

Grammar 101, "...but the issue reoccured...", let me help you. It is recurred not reocurred. Yes, there is a word occurred, however when it again happens it has recurred.

I don't understand why this is front page news?

I don't either. Google has screwed up directions just as bad yet nobody ever mentions them. This is ridiculous to say the least. So sick of the Apple haters these days. No matter how well Apple does people still complain and bitch. Apple just can't win.

Woah. Woah.

I visited the US recently and had to give my fingerprints and spent 2 hours in line only to get harassed in the sexuals by a sweatty overweight man named Carlos, because 'national security'.

But people in Alaska can just drive right onto the runway into the path of a 737 carrying 100+ passengers?

Apple Cart (-ography)

I wish Apple would just stick to the things they do best and leave the cartography to Google.

No doubt about it, adopting the attitude that Apple can do no wrong is about the most dangerous thing that can happen to Apple, and I certainly hope that Apple's mapping department takes a much more critical approach to this problem than some posters here.

Having said that, as others have posted, we should take all GPS instructions with a grain of salt, and use common sense when following GPS directions.

I agree. People need to pay attention to what they are actually doing. GPS is quite good, but not perfect and sometimes common sense is needed. If Apple maps shows a restaurant in the middle of a lake, people shouldn't try to drive there if there is no road. :D

What's sup whit the bad spellin' and grammar RicD? Reoccurred is the correctist word bro! The crap didn't go down at regular intervals!! More of a hard to predict event!!! Word!!!! UP!!!!!!!!

Google wouldn't give iOS users turn by turn navigation at all. The only reason they have it now is to appear the "better" alternative to Apple Maps. I've had Google maps give me insane directions also, Apple's just getting all the press because of how poorly they came out of the gates.

good joke there buddy.. because Google has had Turn-by-turn on Android for the past few years. They didn't put it on iOS until last year because Apple was so restrictive of 3rd party apps providing common sense services to users. Apple Maps is a joke. Google is the king of maps, Apple put its ego in the front and shafted Google Maps because of that. That's not right. and now most iPhone users get an iPhone, download Google Maps and hide the Apple Maps icon in some hidden folder. lol

why is driving onto the taxiway even possible?

You mean I need to give up my bottle of water and get groped by security in order to get into the waiting room for the plane, but I can drive my car down to the runway without even encountering a closed gate? Doesn't this sort of make any other airport security pointless?

Gosh, I hope no nefarious bad guy ever finds this out.

IMO, they've taken on too much and have spread themselves too think in many areas. But it is actually quite amusing to read all of the excuses that people come up with to defend Apple maps. Maps was not ready for prime time when it was released and it will take them quite a while to get even close to what Google has to offer today.

I can count the number of software products on my fingers. How can a company in the top 3 market cap be spread too thin on a limited number of products?

This is the case for many if not most airports. I've submitted numerous problem reports for the past 6 months to no avail. This was after I was directed to the wrong exit off of the interstate and ended up at the back of the Rochester, NY airport. Just checked and this hasn't been updated.

Try checking any airport in your area. Baltimore Washington airport will also lead you to a taxi way.

Just checked San Francisco airport. It's messed up as well. I suspect most airports are tagged incorrectly.

----------

It's Alaska remember. They all got shotguns duh

No, it's most airports. Try check one close to you.

I am astounded by the way some people on here get so personally offended whenever something negative towards Apple is written. They will make errors, not everything they touch is the best. Face reality folks.

Maps still can't find our international airport in Fredericton NB. When you type in Fredericton nb international airport it takes you to airport rd which is nowhere near the airport. I've told them a few times but they haven't fixed it. Lol.

TomTom has that information correctly (just looked for both YFC and Fredericton International Airport on http://www.routes.tomtom.com, although their directions get you to outside the airport on Lincoln Rd, whereas Google Maps on the desktop get you to the actual terminal), so that would definitely appear to be an Apple issue - whether it be the version of the maps that they have bought from TomTom, or Apple Map's search algorithm. If you scroll down the map to where the airport is, you can see a big pinkish blob covering the airport area, but no POI information.

I agree. Not every launch product change is perfect.

Wow. People can't possibly be that stupid. Really?

I can't tell you how many times Google has given me wrong-to-dangerous directions. Did I follow them? Nope. Why not? Common sense. People who are so stupid that they trust a map over their own eyes (and numerous road signs) shouldn't be allowed to drive. In fact, they shouldn't be allowed to own a smart phone. In fact... yeah.

"It wasn't my fault, officer. Maps pointed me directly into the women's dressing room. Look! It says it right there!"

"But Maps said to turn right while on the bridge. I didn't see the fencing."

"Maps made me walk into a steaming pile of excrement. I'm suing!"
