Apple today updated the AirPods lineup with the AirPods 3, which feature an AirPods Pro-like design featuring shorter stems, spatial audio support, Adaptive EQ, longer battery life, HD voice quality for FaceTime, IPX4 water resistance, a MagSafe case, and more.

The new AirPods are priced starting at $179, which is $20 cheaper than the prior AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case, and Apple is also keeping the AirPods 2 around as a lower-cost option. Apple's full AirPods lineup now looks like this:
  • AirPods 2 - $129
  • AirPods 3 - $179
  • AirPods Pro - $249
  • AirPods Max - $549
It's worth noting that Apple has also introduced a new version of the AirPods Pro that come with a MagSafe Charging Case like the AirPods 3. The MagSafe Charging Case is able to quickly align with MagSafe charging pad options.

New AirPods Pro purchases will come with the MagSafe Charging Case, but for those wondering if you can get the case on a standalone basis, you can't. Apple does not plan to offer the MagSafe Charging Case on its own, so there will be no upgrade option. The standard AirPods Pro wireless charging case can be used with MagSafe anyway because it's a Qi-based wireless charging protocol. All that's missing is the magnetic alignment.

The AirPods 3 can be pre-ordered from Apple's website starting today, and are set to arrive to customers next week.

I'm very excited to get the AirPods 3 but my wallet needs a month to recover after buying the Apple Watch 7. Hopefully they aren't sold out and back ordered by then.

So will the Airpod Pros be updated soon?

Apple have simply guaranteed that I will buy no Airpods for the foreseeable future.

Who would, with this ambiguity hanging over the lineup?

I want to buy my family a set of Airpod Pros each for Christmas.

But that's a pretty crap present if they could be updated in January.

Literally, the one thing I was most eager about today and I am stoked that they were finally announce. It was almost starting to feel like AirTag all over again!

My 1st gen AirPods are basically useless at this point so I’m glad I held out. I cannot wait for them to get here.

So I guess reverse charging won’t be a thing since the polarity of the magnets would not allow the AirPods to attach to the back of the iPhones.

Is it better to buy the AirPod 3 over the pros? I don’t care about the noise cancellation and they are currently the same price. AirPod Pro is $179 on Amazon and AirPod 3 is also $179 on apple’s site. Not sure which ones to buy.

You can reverse charge using a MagSafe battery pack as an intermediary :D

Basic rundown:

AirPods Gen 1 (discontinued) - The kind everyone knows and is familiar with.

AirPods Gen 2 (still available) - Same exact style and case as Gen 1, but case has wireless charging.

AirPods Gen 3 (released today) - Same basic style and case as AirPods Pro. Has wireless charging. Has spatial audio. Better battery life than AirPods Pro. No silicone tips. No ANC / transparency.

If you don't care about noise cancellation, no real benefit to getting the Pro unless you just prefer in-ear silicone tips.

I would buy the AirPod 3 as I like the fit of a regular AirPod and don't have to deal with rubber tips. Although with noise cancellation, AirPod Pro is a good deal at $179.

One has rubber tips the other don't. So it's a matter of do you like rubber in your ear or not.

...I'm trying to decide if I should get the AirPod 3's OR wait for the next Pros, but I'm getting impatient...

I've been waiting for these since discussion of them first began last year. My Airpods 2 are cracked, can't hold a charge, and the microphones are almost useless. Fingers crossed that this edition resolves those sorts of issues. Still, it's $329 in New Zealand, which translates to $233USD. WTF, Apple? I know you inflate prices in some markets, but shipping hasn't increased to NZ so much that an extra $54 is justified for this little thing, good lord.
