Sadly I am now using MapQuest. Pleasently MapQuest has its own turn by turn built into it and Siri isn't needed and its free. I have a iPhone 4 so its a nice surprise though I'm not happy with the white interface in music and the phone dialing but I can manage.

This is clearly an unfinished product that they've rushed out to avoid having to keep Google Maps on iOS6. Whatever their issues with Google this is a really stupid mistake. They should have kept the Google Maps and waited until the Apple version is properly finished, even if that means waiting to iOS7 to release it. This just makes Apple look very sloppy. After last years debacle over releasing an unfinished Siri you would have thought they would have learned their lesson. You have to think that Steve would have had someone's balls on a skewer for this.

I love all of my Apple products and services. I really do. But taking Google Maps away from us (ESPECIALLY MY STREET VIEW!!!), was a big, big mistake since they are obviously not ready for prime time.

And those 3D/Flyover images are ****** scary. It's like I took a good dose of mescaline and now I'm having horrible hacullinations.
well said each in his own plus in my opinion IOS 6 is the worse update ever

They should have released the new Maps in the Appstore (like iBooks) and kept the old Maps until iOS 6.1 or 6.2 . Everybody wins!

If iPhone 5 is jailbroken, I bet people will find a way to side load the old Maps.

This is a good solid 1.0 release. Remember Google Maps has been going for several years and more. Google won't be laughing today. They know they are about to be eclipsed by Apple.

If you think this is a good solid release then I'd really hate to use something you think is bad. It's an awful cringing embarassment to Apple and useless for anything other than a punchline to a joke about bad mapping apps.

The Daring Fireball guy accused reviewers of "grading on a curve" every time they reviewed an Android phone and said things like "for an Android phone this (feature X, whatever) is good." and he pointed out that the same reviewers wouldn't let Apple get away with anything so shady.

Apple, imho, don't deserve to be 'graded on a curve' either. This is a bad application and Apple don't get a free pass because they've not done it before. This represents an overall backwards step in the functionality of any newly upgraded iPhone that had iOS 5 on it last week.

No criticism here. The less Google spyware—the better! They are tracking every step you do!

This is so important for me personally that I can easily wait for some weeks until the worst flaws are fixed. And the transit info didn't work here with Google Maps either (except for some months in 2008/2009 when there was a soccer championship in this country).

The 3D view looks gorgeous on iPad. The controls are intuitive and fit perfect to the touch technics.

Thanks, Apple! Keep up the good work! In less than two years Apple's maps are clearly better than all others together.

Apparently I live in Duncaster. I object to the lack of spell checking. The satellite map quality is...poor, but I can understand that. Spelling a town's name wrong is just sloppy.

Without checking with the inhabitants, the US postal service changed the name of Skagua Alaska to Skagway. They've been fighting to restore the original spelling ever since.

This section of road where I've dropped the pin (between clasketgate and hungate) is actually called corporation street and there should be a "Lincolnshire probation service" (quite an important POI) there.

However, it's actually shown here:-

That building that's allegedly the probation service is actually the jobcentre (a good five minute walk from the real probation service).

I wonder if the jobcentre is shown as being further up the road...

And here's Lincoln castle (which is also the crown court), one of the finest parts of our city:

What an absolute disgrace!!

Wow, free flash backs included with every download. Why hasn't anyone mentioned that?

Well I'm glad it's drawing significant criticism, it is in no way, shape, or form ready to replace Google Maps. If this was the original iPhone fine, but now there are too many people that depend on the maps application for getting around.

complete mess

I'd be waiting dutifully to buy my first iMac , and been thoroughly pissed off on the seeming unending wait for the new ones.

Then I was going to get the new iPhone 5 , why would i possibly do that when Apple's let a spat with its former partner completely ruin the experience for its clients. I'm loyal but i'm not a tit, no chance they're getting more out of me till they demonstrate an ability to get this right

Why did you buy iPhone then man?!?!?!?
Use something else then!
I think they did good till now. I know they will improve this!

Good job on avoiding to answer the question. If this is a good job to you, your quality of work must be terrible. I feel sorry for anyone who encounters you professionally?

So do you know anything about Cartography?

Apple should just leave some things to Google.

Agreed. Here's hoping when a Jailbreak comes, somebody adds Googles data linked in to the maps app (if that's possible anyway). Doesn't the "new" maps app have the ability to be connected to other, third party apps somehow? Could this potentially be built into the new google maps app to help out?

Imagine if you were living here.
There's about 8 - 10 million iPhone users in Japan, and over here people rely on maps A LOT. If a solution isn't found soon, Apple will just have handed the Japanese market over to Google and Microsoft.

Oh yeah, Id rather go with the crappy Galaxy S3 for maps.
They better change this soon.

FIX THIS!!! i need NYC subway public transportation directions!!!! what was apple thinkinggggggg:eek::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Cool down. Don't tell it to Apple (or—even worse—to us harmless MR forum users) but call your local public transit company for having them provide an app with their local time tables that can be easily implemented in the global maps app.

officially the worse app:mad:

come on apple , i use to find my way around thanks to iOS5 but now all i got is nothing

and i know my country gonna be the last you come to to fix the map :(

As soon as native Google maps is available I'll be happy Apple is throwing their hat into the maps game. But for now I can't rely upon an app that can't find east 12th street in freaking Manhattan...

Hmm... This sounded horrible, so I typed "East 12th st, new york, ny" in the maps app and it sure found it. I also tried it with E instead of East. What am I missing?

"- A search for Manchester United Football Club directs users to Sale United Football Club, a community team for ages five and above."

This is a problem because most Man U fans aren't from Manchester, and don't go to games often, so really need their maps to try and find the Stadium

I'm going to NY for the first time next month. Looks like the iPhone is staying home and the S3 is my companion.

ugh, again... maps.google.com will give you the same information that maps did. You guys are acting hysterical. Yes it sucks that it's not "native" but it works pretty damn good.

I can't believe that they have released software in such a miserable state. Precision is essential in maps, it's more important than getting rid of an unwanted app by a competitor.

I was really happy to read the first reviews about the iPhone 5, especially with the competition growing stronger every day, it still sounded like a great device and obviously it's already extremely successful - but how on earth can they seriously release a map app in such lousy shape when they should know that in this tough market any severe image damage means hundreds of thousands less sold units.

With all of these errors in the maps you wonder what was going on with their quality check? Hell, on this forum people gave the beta version a very hard time - for a good reason. You would think that it's so easy for Apple to get "real customer feedback" just by looking at such threads - and after reading that they should have realized that the app is nowhere close to release quality.
hell with all the money they have they could run their own macrumors forum in an office complex in Cupertino where all of that software is tested under real world conditions and feedback is submitted by real users. I know I'm simplifying the process of developing a huge project like this, but in the end it's just about this app causing massive damage to Apple just as they seemed to land a huge success. The iPhone5 hasn't changed technically but many users opinions on Apple will change - and that will hurt the sales significantly.
