Apple's New Macs to Ship With macOS Golden Gate

The new Mac mini and Mac Studio models announced by Apple this week are "slated to ship" with macOS Golden Gate, according to Daring Fireball's John Gruber.

Apple's product pages for the new Mac mini and Mac Studio models mention macOS Golden Gate features such as Siri AI, providing further evidence that the computers will ship with the latest operating system, instead of macOS Tahoe.

In addition, FCC documents and other evidence uncovered by MacRumors all point towards the new Macs coming with macOS Golden Gate preinstalled.

"The new Mac mini comes to life with the upcoming macOS 27, which includes Siri AI, a profoundly more capable and personal assistant; helpful Apple Intelligence features across everyday apps; and an expansive set of improvements that make the Mac even more responsive and reliable," said Apple, in a press release.

Apple said the new Mac mini and Mac Studio will be released on Tuesday, September 22, so macOS Golden Gate would need to be released before that date if the computers will ship with that operating system. Based on historical patterns, macOS Golden Gate will most likely be released during the week of Monday, September 14.

I’ve been very happy with the iOS 27 beta on my phone, but my Mac is still on Sequoia. Not sure if I’ll go for 27.0 or wait for the .1 release on there.

The betas have been going swimmingly for me. Liquid Glass is MUCH more refined, especially in the tinted states. Sidebars are 1000x better. I wouldn’t hesitate to upgrade from Sequoia.

I mean obviously?

If a new model is shipping even a week after a new OS general launch they will ship with that OS.

Obviously depending on manufacturing and such you’d most likely get a day one update to line it up with general release but still.

Think this has been the case forever.

This just in the 18 Pro will come with IOS 27…

iOS and MacOS 27 have been really good, especially as a comparison to iOS 26 and Tahoe.

Those of you sticking on Sequoia because you read/heard about how bad Tahoe was, Golden Gate is better. Take a full backup and upgrade. I recommend it, but take no responsibility if you don't like it 🙂

Well yes. It would be newsworthy if new Macs weren't shipped with Golden Gate, just as it would be newsworthy if the new iPhones next month weren't shipped with iOS27.

New hardware is shipped with the latest software. That's not a news story.

Based on historical patterns, macOS Golden Gate will most likely be released during the week of Monday, September 14.

However, historical patterns could be very misleading.

If some sort of exploit were discovered in 26 (whichever version), Apple might see fit to advance the schedule. However, if one were discovered in the release version of 27, they might defer the schedule. That might apply even if 27 is already installed on the physical devices in warehouses. At least any such exploit would be limited to the new products which might make fixing a little easier.

Obviously, a day one update is quite likely for those products regardless any exploits. The combination of new hardware and new software release often finds some issues, however minor, that need fixing quickly.

Exploits appear to be one of the most important drivers of update schedules these days, for obvious reasons.

I think some here are forgetting that MacOS has traditionally shipped in October. I can’t recall them shipping a MacOS in September before. So it is a little unusual and would need a clarification. But it would also be really unusual if they drop the actual Mac release in September for everyone else as well.

Tahoe just did last year and Sequoia before it did also (it was the first)

Does anybody know yet if Golden Gate really is a "Snow Leopard" style release, in the sense of providing stability, performance, and bug fixes without adding a ton of new incompatibilities? I'm really no fan of Tahoe, but my music production software does all at least work, so I'm hoping a quicker-than-usual (i.e., less than 12 months) upgrade is going to be safe (mostly to get off Tahoe).
