Apple's rumored new consumer-oriented standalone monitor could appear this year and come in at around the $2,500 price mark, based on comments made by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Writing in his first "Power On" newsletter of 2022, Gurman says the new monitor is "destined to be about half the price of the Pro Display XDR," which he's "hoping" launches sometime this year.
Speaking of Macs and iPads, I'm hoping Apple's next external monitor — destined to be about half the price of the Pro Display XDR — launches in the coming year.
Apple is believed to be developing a lower-priced external monitor that would be sold alongside its high-end Pro Display XDR, which costs $4,999 before factoring in the optional $999 stand.

Taking that into consideration, Gurman's wording suggests he's confident the new display will be somewhere around the $2,500 price mark, although he appears to be less bullish about it being released this year.

Gurman first reported on Apple's development of a standalone display in January 2021, and suggested it will be a consumer-oriented successor to Apple's previous Thunderbolt Display, which was introduced in 2011 for $999 and discontinued in 2016.

In the December edition of his newsletter, Gurman used his Q&A section to double down on his belief that Apple is readying the new display, predicting it would be a "hot seller for those looking to add a larger screen to their new MacBook Pro without spending the equivalent of a luxury car down payment on the Pro Display XDR."

In related rumors, Twitter-based leaker @dylandkt last month claimed LG is developing three new standalone displays that may end up being for Apple, including one based on the current 24-inch iMac, one based on the upcoming 27-inch iMac, and a 32-inch model that may be a new Pro Display XDR with an Apple silicon chip.

In Gurman's latest newsletter, the well-connected journalist also covered his other expectations for new upcoming Apple products in the year ahead, which we've summarized separately.

Man. Apple are really missing the mark if $2500 is the price point. We all just want an iMac screen without the Mac inside, so make it cheeper than your iMacs. Ten's of thousands of employees and they can't get this right. I feel like I am taking crazy pills this is so ridiculous.

I don't understand whom this is for. Like, it's a premium monitor, sure. But a $750 monitor is already premium. A $2500 is… I don't even know what. A supercar of monitors?

Apple needs to figure out a way to get third parties to make reasonably-priced high-resolution displays, and… this ain't it.

A good 32" 4K 120Hz IPS monitor with 1100 FALD zones is currently worth $5K.

If this is 27" 5K+ 120Hz with over 2K FALD zones (like the MacBook Pros), it would be better in every way and at half price!

Unless you need HDR OLED is an option at 50% discount to the rumored 50% discounted price. You also get per pixel "FALD.'

I would buy three if they would cost $500 each. That is at the end the price a 24' monitor should have; at the end it's just an IPS display.

It doesn't make any sense spending $2500 for a monitor when with the same price you can buy a new MacBook Pro or 4 Dell monitor USB-C, QHD, 60Hz which are quite good in terms of quality.

If the price it has to be $2500 or more, better continue selling just one display for "premium" users at $5000. It would be more understandable.

I have the LG 5K UltraFine display (£900) and a separate LG 4K IPS display (£300) connected to my M1 Mac mini, both are attached to a monitor stand. They work great for me, a "pro-sumer".

A $2,500 (read: £2,500 in the UK) Apple monitor is a definite "no" for me. That's crazy pricing. I can get EIGHT good 4K's for that!

I understand that Apple might be wanting to push this as a really great monitor, better than anything out there at the price, but they're going to miss a LOT of Mac users who can't justify that amount of money when there are just as good monitors out there for a fraction of the price.

Apple, if you're listening, just release a monitor that lots of people will buy. We don't all need the best colour representation and all the other gubbins you're thinking of adding on.

Can we have:

- a non pro monitor that is basically the lcd from the M1 iMac in 24 inches - & whatever the 27 inch iMac replacent size is too
- both at reasonable prices ie at the most 1/2 - 2/3 of what the base equivalent iMac costs.

- And the pro versions of these two running at 120hz when we start to get pro macs with the updated HDMI spec to support them.
- these will then be priced starting at half the XDR monitor I’d imagine.

For all the people complaining here that the price is too high and all they want is a simple monitor : why don't you get a monitor from another brand ? Does it have to be branded "Apple" ? There are plenty of very good quality and well designed monitors out there from many brands, and for very reasonable prices ( even for Pro work).
And they will work with any of your Macs.

A major appeal of Apple has been its design and peripherals that are part of a design family.

So it’s disappointing twinning a MacBook or a Mac mini with a (usually) black plastic monitor.

So a reasonably priced Apple designed monitor has been a glaring omission from its Mac lineup (and hopefully it’ll be a peripheral that is part of its iPad lineup too).

its also about the scaling of the screen nobody sells a 5k 27" monitor, the closest you can get is 4k 27" when this is paired with another apple display the items are not scaled correctly and look off (blurry)

OLED monitors are priced very differently from the TVs and they are very unsuitable for desktop use.

The LG UltraFine 27" 4K OLED is $3K and doesn't come with high refresh rate. What it comes with is abysmal brightness and OLED burn-in.

I disagree. Apple traditionally tends to stay away from markets that are well served by other brands, and this is one of them ( the lower-end, not the high-end). There are quite a few good looking monitors, that look almost like a copy of a flatter iMac.
Here is an example, that looks exactly like something Apple would have designed :

I agree but... I recently got $500 (company price) 32 inch 4k HP connected to my MBP.
Does it blend in? No.
Is it better than the TB displays? Yes. (height adjustments and resolution is better)
Is it better that 27 iMac 5k? Certainly not - but the additional 4.5 inches is useful

$2500? Very strange middle ground.

That's the problem, though: almost none of those are high-resolution enough for Retina 2x, so you'll probably run them at 1x. But since macOS no longer supports subpixel rendering either, text will look bad.
