Apple's Next CEO Adds Retired Hardware Executive to His Team

Incoming Apple CEO John Ternus is rehiring Laura Legros, a former vice president of hardware engineering who retired from Apple in 2022, reports Bloomberg.

Legros previously managed product delivery, development schedules, and coordination across engineering teams. Under Ternus, she will work across different parts of the company, and report directly to him.

According to Bloomberg, Legros was one of Ternus' most trusted deputies before she retired. She has presented at past Apple events, introducing the 2018 MacBook Air and the 2020 iPad Air.

As he prepares to take over, Ternus has been shadowing current CEO Tim Cook and leading executive meetings. He has met with company leaders to work on product plans, and has been spending time with Apple's design teams.

Ternus will take over as Apple CEO on September 1. Cook will remain at Apple as executive chairman to engage with policymakers around the world.

What happens with Cue? It looks like his reputation comes more from bias (he looks goofy) than facts. Everyone says he’s an incredible negotiator, and I’ve found his longer speeches (i.e. the one he gave at Duke) very interesting. Btw, he sounds way less “corporate” and more natural than other execs, since I hear that’s a common complaint 🙂

Changing a CEO will cause a leadership shake-up at the highest level, which will have a ripple effect. You will see key hires like this leading up to the September 1st switchover, then for the next 30-90 days you will see multiple "retirements" or leaders assigned to "special projects" (that don't exist) that allow them to vest remaining stock until they are officially shown the door. Expect to see a slew of external hires and internal promotions displacing the previous leadership team.

Once Ternus get's his directs team figured out, this reorg will slowly move down for each level. There will likely be some "right-sizing" of some teams as budget is re-allocated to other "growth" areas of the company. Not a great time to be in middle management at Apple.

I was never super crazy about the transparent plastic Apple hardware era.

The first translucent (not transparent) CRT iMacs and the blue-and-white G3 were nice, though.

I liked the "Snow White" era ... beige/platinum with lots of parallel lines.

I'm not sure the 2020 iPad Air (before the M1 model), but the 2018 MacBook Air (first with the Retina display) was so underpowered.

Same with Jony Ive so they can go back to shrinking their hardware rather than bloating them up?

This one heavy bong load of post considering all the heat issues the MacBook Pros had from about 2016-2020, and that the Mac Mini is smaller than ever, the iMac is thinner than ever, and the Mac Studio now exists.

Never? 🙂 Of all the ex-Apple folks that have ended up in other tech companies or other companies period, Forstall is one of the few no one wanted. Apple doesn’t either🙂
