After announcing last week that it would be launching its online store in India on September 23, the store has now gone live, opening up direct sales for Apple in a largely untapped market with significant growth potential.

As in other countries, Apple's Indian online store offers a full range of Apple products and accessories, with shopping assistance from Apple Specialists, free no-contact delivery, a trade-in program for iPhone sales, free one-on-one online training sessions with certain product purchases, build-to-order Mac options, and multiple payment options.

Isn't it cultural appropriation to just use these traditional indian patterns and the word "Namaste"? Apple really needs to revisit its colonial history and stop RAPING other cultures! Tim Apple, we want answers! /s

On a serious note, I really respect india for having such strict laws in regard to production origin of products. Maybe not Germany alone, but definitely in the context of the EU, they could pull something similar through, if they wanted and the EU-leadership wasn't so hopelessly drunk on globalism. In a way this would force companies to diversify their supply chain, because the highly-optimized single-supply-chains in China came crashing down during this year.

Since "Namaste" is a traditional greeting in India I think it's okay to use it for a store that is made for India. On the other hand I the patterns seem inappropriate to me, too.

Ye!!! Finally configure-to-order is possible. Though prices are on the higher side. MacBook Pro 16" near-max config is $800 more than US store price.

We payb bloated prices for almost all devices 😐

This is great news. And no it's not just an online store for us.
Most importantly, it opens configurable options.
People who didn't trust 3rd party sellers will feel more comfortable buying directly from apple.

Now only thing left is to reduce the taxes, then Apple will easily win the Indian market.

Great news. Another 1.4b people market. Almost 5X the US population. This will be looked at as the pivotal moment for Apple in India.

Keep in mind only a small proportion of this population can actually afford Apple products.

Just for fun, let’s see how much the iPhone SE that is actually even made in India costs. Oh, look at that, 42,500 rupees for the 64gb base SE 2020. That’s $578.41 in USD as of this post. Somehow I was hoping that with this phone made in India they’d be charged the equivalent of our $400 pricepoint for it, or 29,390 rupees roughly.

So yeah, 1.4 billion people but try to imagine how little money most of those people make.

It might start to look like the second coming of Christ if Apple actually charged LESS than the USD equivalent for their iPhone SE for Indian citizens. Charge them something insanely cheap like $100 aka 7,344 rupees. Take the hit. Lead by example. Let those 1.4 billion people ACTUALLY into the Apple ecosystem at profit-loss prices, not just the small percentage that can afford these inflated prices even on products made in India.

Then I’ll be truly impressed and even a bit awed.

Huge country with lots of people, most of them which can't even afford a higher than lowest cost phone let alone any Apple gear.
But, for those who can, now you have the safe place to go to, resellers aren't always your best option.

Surprised they didn't go to Pakistan too, surly they are neighbours?

That would be a long way of...if ever for (obvious) reasons which a won't and can't go into deeper here.

Seems like a good idea, but then Chinese scalpers would buy the whole lot. ;)

I too can't take this "cultural appropriation" thing seriously, it's such a 2018 problem, when american cooking rice was considered racism and international conflict lol
But the poster is so cringe, imagine, if Apple was Indian company, opening online store in USA and poster was Bruce Springsteen, Grand Canyon, Bald Eagle, burger and on top it was "Hawdy 'yall" - it's that level of cringe.

Looking at India and Brazil the only thing this accomplishes is that everything is just needlessly expensive and nobody is happy having those laws, also because it barely has any economic upside. So it sounds like the exact thing that the EU would implement.

The just need to add a keyboard configuration too, otherwise great.
The price might be on the high side compared to the US and the average pay in india, but it is still cheaper then in most (if not all) EU countries.

Well, this explains why Apple services went down yesterday.

If they were plumbers, they would shut off half of the world’s water supply to install a new faucet in the kitchen.

The original SE was priced at Rs 21k when it was made in India. I was also hoping that this new SE should be priced at those levels since it is made in India. I am hoping that is the next step. Most products are 15-30% more than US and I am including California level taxes. If this comes down to 10% then Apple would see a lot more success.

While Apple most likely can afford to pay its (and its contractors') workers more, unfortunately, Apple is a business beholden to its shareholders to maximize profits. Too bad you can't become a $2 trillion company by paying decent wages.

I don't know if others noticed, but look closely at the design. I see a number of hidden Apple icons in there including:

Photos
App Store
iTunes
Settings
Breathe
new Siri "busy" icon
microphone icon
Safari
Activity rings
small Camera, Phone, Messages, and FaceTime icons that are cut off on the left of the screenshot in the article
three different arrow icons in the upper left that look familiar, but I can't place them definitely
cardboard box (some dev tool icon?)

And also the following non-icon Apple-related imagery:

AirPods, AirPods Pro
iPhone triple-lens camera
Apple Pencil
Apple Watch with sport band and activity rings face
matrix of circles reminiscent of Apple watch app screen

Anything I missed?

That’s all great and all, but the Apple Store App has yet to be updated to include an option for The India store!
