Though Schiller transitioned from marketing chief to "Apple Fellow" in 2020 to take a step back from Apple and spend more time on personal projects and friends, he is reportedly working close to 80 hours a week. . .

So, Phil stepped back from for some 'Me Time', and is putting 80hrs. a week to do that. Well, what was he doing a Apple, 168hrs a week?

Schiller is 63. Doesn't he have millions of dollars already? What more does he need? Doesn't he know these are the last good years of his life? Phil, if you're reading this, please stop and enjoy your golden years. Everyone deserves that. Even filthy rich people who protect on-device app distribution monopolies and take away your headphone jack to make high-margin wireless earbuds more appealing.

Congratulations to him for a long career and a strong work ethic. Seriously.

Now please, Phil, retire.

We can tell you're writing emails at odd hours. You say a lot of weird ****. Just give it a rest please. You're doing more harm than good at this point.

No-one should be working 80+ hours a week. Regardless of position or compensation. Its 2024, not 1824.

Don't feel sorry for him though. He's clearly a control freak if he can't trust the thousands working for him to do the right thing without him overseeing everything.

This. History has shown time and time again that the single most powerful skill a leader can have is delegation. Identifying the talent you need, and empowering them to do the task. If at this point he hasn't built a team he can trust, he can't run something this big competently. It's humanly impossible to do this much by oneself and do it well.

People close to Schiller describe his three main hobbies as cars, Boston sports teams and Apple, where he is still known to work nearly 80 hours a week, respond to emails almost immediately and answer phone calls at any time. -Wall Street Journal

I don’t believe it.

I thought we had got to the point where we realise that quality over quantity is better every time. One of my workplaces had to send out warnings to people who were doing too many hours... because some people took it to the extreme and ended up having car accidents. It was absolutely serious.

I'm pretty sure numerous studies have shown that there is an optimum number of hours for peak efficiency and performance. You end up getting to the point of diminishing returns and actually making serious mistakes.

It is also key to be able to switch off... that means no reading emails at 3:20 AM, no sending texts at 1:40 AM or taking calls at 6:00 to 7:00 AM while you're trying to have breakfast etc

Sadly it depends on the job. There are too many job roles where the strategy is just to burn through people. Think any job mostly worked by teenagers.

So yeah why someone in his position would do this to himself, I do not know. Some people just can't turn it off. And I think we can see especially the last few years it's not doing him any favors.

Is he counting his meal hours and snack breaks in that number? Because he looks to not be skipping any...

The app store has been around for YEARS. Sure there will be some complex problems that come up that require a team where he can lead in forging a way - but 95% of the running of the store should be at best be a complicated problem with best practices and competent staff that can easily make those decisions.

Maybe he's spending those 80 hours trying to figure out how to raise the walls on that app store garden.

and if Phil delegated to people who are equally as passionate about keeping the app store locked, people here would whinge again.

all i can see is a hope that cutting his workload or involvement will free things up.
that may not be the case. depends who he employs to follow through with bits he delegates.

good to see fat shaming by one poster "spends three hours at the table".
well done you. hero.
perhaps consider someone working those hours may not have the same time you have to exercise or eats when he can rather than what he should? and at 63 his metabolism is probably not what it once was. regardless, your input was unneeded. do better.

To be honest… running an app store is not going to be the most intellectual or demanding of activities…

Most of the intellectual work will be done by employees lower down the pecking order… programmers, artists, marketing

Sure, he will make crucial decisions… but he will have a team of experts and advisors… lawyers etc…..in general… it will mostly be business politics in his job.

Schiller's one of the few execs at Apple that knows what he's doing and is damn good at it. Yes he takes Apple Evangelism to new levels but that's his job, or was now kek.

Yeah he's got his flaws but I'd take him 1000x's over anyone currently at Apple
