Funnily enough, HDMI 2.1 would be able to feed 5K 24b uncompressed @ 120Hz (42.5Gbps) as long as the connection could drop the FEC (forward error correction) overhead (42.0 -> 42.6 Gbps). Ironically, FEC would be used for DSC otherwise.

Apple's Pro Display XDR Is Six Years Old Today

I have a Pro Display XDR and I'm somewhat happy with it. I had a Cinema Display before, but after a while, I found it too small and all my open windows were just too crumbled. That's really the only reason I upgraded to the Pro Display.
Of course, image quality matters to me. I'm not a professional who works with image though, so I can't judge that part.
What I do wish or what annoys me is that…
1) There's no built-in camera. It's not particularly good quality, it's one additional cable you need, it takes on additional port on your display, and it also means additional effort when vacuum cleaning. It also looks less minimalistic on the back or more ugly in general, sitting at the top of the display.
2) There's no built-in microphone. I use dictate a lot (for example to type this here). And FaceTime/calls. The Logitech camera has it built in microphone, but it's not particularly good. Much worse than on the Studio Display.
3) It doesn't have any speakers. So you need extra speakers. That takes extra place. And it needs extra effort to clean it from dust, etc. I wish it had speakers of the quality of the Studio Display. They were really fantastic.
As for the Apple Chip… I'm not sure what exactly the purpose of that is? I know the Studio Display has one. What is it meant for?

And despite rampant inflation, Apple Pro Display XDR is still available at the same great price as the day it launched.
Pfft to OLED Hopefully micro led. Self lit like OLED but super bright and no burn in. Stupidly expensive though
Personally I use a 4K 55” LG C OLED. Might burn in but has a 5 year warranty and cost £600!

Due to my being a Xennial & future health concerns I've decided to give up on 4hrs of daily video & computer games.
| rather do yoga/CF/pickelball 4hrs daily.
Went with my mom to her Baby Boomer MBA Christmas party.
Her classmates who do 10k steps daily look like they're in their 50s/60s with little to no health concerns.
Those with a sedentary lifestyle reports C, CVD & T2D... or they're RIP.

I wish the other monitors Apple provides is the same. I despise built in cameras. I don’t want one always connected and an external camera always looks better anyway.
Yes IMO Apple needs to provide industry standard ports like almost every other monitor in existence.
I don’t have an issue with their more mass market (*cough*) display(s) having a camera, speakers, and a microphone, however I do not want their “pro” display(s) to have any of those things. Update the XDR to be the best monitor it can be with better materials and technologies that weren’t available or practical in 2019. High chance that it will join my desktop
I prefer to use a FF or MF MILC as my webcam.
Wish this was possible with APS-C, APS-H & FF dSLRs as early as 2003.
Even P&S as early as 1996 would be nice to have as a webcam.

Same here but with three BenQ 27" monitors with 4K. I would pay handsomely for three affordable 5K Apple monitors, but I'm a senior that needs reading glasses. And in all honesty, this is a marvel compared to the Green Monochrome monitors of the 80s. But yeah, Apple, get your act together!
Oh wow, so it hasn't come down actually! I knew it was 699, but when ordering I saw 400. Hmm, 'kay.
I replaced my 30" ACD after 11 years because I wanted a 4k screen. Not because the display wasn't working anymore. Yup, build to last.
