Can’t remember but we are bombarded daily by negativity about Apple. Post after post predicting failure, blathering about overpricing, pronouncements of no innovation. In these forums Apple’s Armageddon is always right around the corner, one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.

So it would normal to expect a a bad financial result and then be surprised by a quarter like this one, the best ever. When you read the negativity every day you start to wonder. Hence a question like your comes up. When in the hell is Apple finally goin to fail.

I’m interested to know when the last bad quarter was and why, and how Tim Cook managed the questions about it. Would be interesting to see the parallel. I don’t follow many businesses earnings calls and only really see them float up on here from time to time, but Apple seem to have good earnings calls, so I’d be interested to know a time maybe where it was different and how he answered.

Q1 2016 last time Cook reported a negative quarter. Mainly because of iPhone sales in China.

Tim Cook is saying Apple intelligence will grow as more devices are eventually sold with them being able to be used on them. The million dollar question that Tim Cook isn’t answering is how many people are actually USING Apple intelligence. All of my devices are Apple
Intelligence capable…and I’ve turned it off on all of them. Can sell a 10 or 10 million Apple intelligence devices, if people aren’t using it then it doesn’t mean much. He’s being quite deceitful with his answers…
Do you realize YOU are not a credible statistic, right ? Most of the users (with an AI capable device, I mean) most probably doesn’t even know it is possible to disable it.
Because, by the way, it is a meaningless move. You don’t need it, you don’t use it. Why bother to disable ? AI is not taking control of your device, if you are not using it actively. Hysteria so typical of this forum… 😏

Resurect jobs first.
Don't think that is my problem at all. I'm however certain that the soul don't die (expect in specific cases that is way over course here) and that reincarnation is an absolutely reality. He might walk around somewhere and already have plans for a company that will bring down Apple. Or he just do something entirely different. The consciousness of Universe have mystical ways of working - I leave it at that.

Some of us like our storage space back and also better battery life. Especially when it’s practically useless in comparison to ChatGPT, Claude, etc.

"And I think I know from my own personal experience, once you start using the features you can't imagine not using them anymore," Cook said.

That's hilarious.

I, like a few others I know, have switched off Apple Intelligence.

Aside from briefly messing around with Image Playground and Genmoji out of curiosity, the features have been a complete waste of time.

So bad, I'd rather have the 7GB storage and battery life back, however minor the gains.

For anything generative, I just used the ChatGPT app, Apple refused many requests because of their overly cautious and politically sensitive settings.

Turning off the notification summary in iOS 18.3 - arguably the most useful Apple Intelligence feature - was the cherry atop a pretty bland and mediocre sponge cake.

I don’t know anyone who rates Apple Intelligence highly, outside of this forum, anyway.

Earnings calls is what Tim Cook cares most about. When Steve Jobs was CEO, product introductions was what Jobs cared most about.

Cook is focused on maximizing value for shareholders. Jobs was focused on maximizing value for customers.
Oh, another Cook hate post from a certain person.

Cook is doing his job as CEO better than Jobs ever did. Gone strength to strength since Cook took after andmaforstall got the boot. Funny how these things just coincide huh?

Not only that, but since they made it and Opt Out feature, I took a hard look at the settings and additionally deactivated what Apple Intelligence (and since my 13 mini does (understandbly) only have access to Siri) and Siri can learn from my Apps, letting Apple collect less data (even if they promise to never collect such data, but that can change with update TOS or business decision). In short them shoving down the new wonderpill to sell the next slew of devices, they made me reconsider a more stricter approach and I hope some felt the same way.

Yeah it’s the same boring people doing it every time. I just don’t understand why people just hate on Apple. They get bad results and they are doomed…. They get good results and it’s all about greed. Some people just don’t have happy lives I guess.

Quite possibly up there as one of the most daftest statements I have ever read on the forum.

Steve Jobs:

Launched game-changing products like the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Revolutionised entire industries inc music (iTunes), smartphones (iPhone), software distribution (App Store) as well as entirely new categories (iPad).

Tim Cook:

Inherited all the above and has spent the last decade fine tuning, optimising and milking it for every last cent.
Kudos, he didn't run Apple into the ground. But let’s not pretend he’s in the same league as the man who built it.

- iPhone 16 series is not series is not selling remarkably well, nor remarkably bad. This should drive Apple to innovate more

On the backdrop of the mobile phone market growing +4% in 2024, a drop in iPhone sales isn’t just "not remarkable"—it’s a red flag for Apple. Investors won’t be losing sleep since services revenue is climbing, but internally? I’d bet there’s some serious concern. The iPhone has been the backbone of Apple’s business for years—if it's starting to show cracks, that’s a problem they can’t ignore.

120hz displays on the iPhone 17's are probably going to be great boost especially in markets like China I reckon.

It’s worth remembering that Steve Jobs did all of the above with Tim Cook as one of his right hand man. Having the idea for a revolutionary product like the iPhone is nothing if Steve Jobs didn’t have access to the supply chain needed to manufacture it in sufficient quantities to sell.

And while Steve Jobs was technically the CEO on paper, in reality, he had already handed off most of his duties to Tim Cook, who was pretty much running the company’s daily operations at that point.

Different people are needed at different parts of a company’s life cycle, and I doubt Steve Jobs would have fared all that well in today’s business climate, where Apple’s biggest challenges are not other smartphone companies such as Samsung or Huawei, but governments of various nations and an increasingly polarised political climate.

But let’s not pretend he’s in the same league as the man who built it.
I guess if you need to define what it takes to be a man, you might say that. I have my opinion and you have yours. But if you need to try and denigrate my view, that’s your prerogative. But it helps me understand where your definition comes from.

As far as your comments go. If you’re going to curate a biased point of view, in the way you have, it shows your argument is terribly flawed. Maybe make a better argument by using all the relevant facts and not missing out what Cook did in the Jobs era and what he has also done in his. Jobs said, Apple would not have had the success it had without Cook. Credit where credit is due. In the same way Cook leads with his mind on the lessons he learned from Jobs. Jobs defined the company. Cook made it a success.

Well at some point i guess it will come to the EU as well - I have been in the apple Eco system for about 20 years, but tbh their total failure of delivering to EU for the past 5+years have me wondering if Apple is for me.

Right now i like Apple for the privacy, and i dont trust Google - and i really like how everything works together.

but Apple have some MAJOR challanges ahead
  1. EU - they are not delivering same services here like NO AI AT ALL
  2. Apple Carplay is like 10 years behind, it was mad for 8" screens and do scale well. - and why only 3 main shortcuts, .. why because it was made for 8" screens, you could easily fit in 10 on a big screen like modern cars have.
  3. There are so many things that would have never happend under Jobs - we need attention to details rather than new features like who need new emojis, i use 5 i dont care if they take them away. if they fix all the stuff that could be easily fixed if you payed attention to details like Jobs did.
    1. snooze button / stop alarm button have reversed placement on countdown vs Alarm
    2. when you pick up a call the black screen with a timer take over the whole ****ing screen on Carplay WHY
    3. the enter pin and enter passcode, why is button placement so different.
    4. why cant i add an appointment to multiple calenders (android have Applications like "Copy Calendar Events" - app that take care if it
    5. when i search in my calendar the oldest occurrences come first... so if i want to find my appointment for my barber, i have to scroll throug every applintment since 2017
    6. why do my freaking ipods connect automaticaly to my mac, even if i toggle "only if they were connected last" i have 1 set that i keep at my computer and 1 set i carry around for phone / Car
    7. why do my care take over the call from my ipods even before i get in the car, i NEVER want it to take over calls (but yes i want to play music via the screen
    8. why can i search for an app and then have the iphone show me whe it is... now i have to look through EVERY single folder to find the app to delete it... i can search for it, i can share it, BUT NOOO you cant delete it via the search or have ipone take you to the folder / page
    9. and the list goes on and on and on... Pay atention to details... its why we love you

I was waiting for the "Apple is doomed" rubbish we see when we Apple have 0.9% drop on a device. But here we have it folks.

Meanwhile. Services up 23%, iPad up 14%, Mac up 15%. But Apple are doomed! 😂

I’ve got an iPhone 16 and I keep forgetting I even have Apple Intelligence available.

Same. It’s poorly done. I am sure most of my friends don’t even know it’s enabled or even a thing. Using both, I can say Samsung does it better. Proper overview with descriptions of what each item does and you can enable or disable each item individually

Apart from, you know, the company wouldn't still exist if Jobs hadn't turned it around.

Cook has done well in following Jobs but if a Tim Cook would've taken the job in 1997 Apple probably wouldn't exist now.

Awfully quiet from the "Apple is doomed" crowd this morning.

Couple of points:
  • I will say it certainly looks that Apple's China sales have peaked, which obviously will have significant impacts if that is indeed the case. Wonder if the rumored new form factor with the "Air" phone will drive sales there.
  • Interesting that Apple Intelligence seems to be driving sales of the iPhone 16, I honestly wouldn't have expected that.

Every time i see margins going up it reminds me that they're turning the screws on some combination of supplier or customer to keep a bigger slice of the pie for itself and the shareholders, vs just growing the revenue (size of the pie)

Jobs was more about growing the pie through new products and new innovations that made people want to buy the products. Cook is about growing the profitability even in the face of declining revenue
You know how difficult that is? Under Jobs the revenue would just decline, but because of where cook has taken apple bumps and potholes along the way have less of an impact on earnings.

Or the drop was already predicted and accounted for and apple has mapped out its plans with some measure of real world sales. MR posters view this as a “crack” , but it is unknown as to how apple views this.

Ah more hypotheticals. Or apple would grown bigger and much faster than under jobs. More innovation etc. I like playing hypotheticals.

Apple Intelligence will begin the EU in April on iOS, it's already there for Macs (in English, though, to be fair).

The delay is because they needed to make sure that Apple Intelligence didn't run afoul of the DMA. When your government decides that it is qualified to "help" Apple design its operating system because it knows better than Apple, things are going to get delayed or not released at all - if Apple guesses wrong and the feature isn't allowed it could cost Apple a up to 20% of their global revenue - which is more revenue than the EU accounts for. Not worth the risk.
