Apple has updated Remote [App Store, Free], their iPhone and iPod touch application for controlling music on computers or Apple TVs, to version 1.2. According to Apple, the new update offers bug fixes and adds compatibility with the forthcoming iTunes 8.1.

Initially launched with iTunes 7.7 in June 2008, Remote added playlist editing in September and currently offers the following features:
- Control the music on iTunes or Apple TV
- See the album artwork on your Remote
- Create Genius playlists
- Create and edit playlists in iTunes
- Search your whole iTunes library
- Control your AirTunes speakers

Remote is a great app. But I can't seem to break myself of the habit of reaching for the regular white Apple remote. (The one they don't bundle anymore!)

I just wish EyeTV had a similar remote app. Then I could hide my white remote and change my habits.

The EyeTV was my first reaction when I saw this. Hopefully they are working on one.

Remote.app has a lot of room to grow when paired with an AppleTV. As-is, it is much easier to search iTunes or YouTube from Remote.app than with the white Apple remote.

I got crazy if I search using the Apple Remote.

Especially back in one of the original versions where if you searched YouTube and had "Searching fo" and went over to the results by mistake, and then went back, it'd have cleared the word you are searching! Have to enter "for" again, but drove me nuts for big word searches.

I agree, there are some issues ... that's where the "room to grow" part comes into play. :D

For instance, it would be nice to see the search results in Remote.app and be able to select the item you wish to play on the AppleTV instead of having to swap between Remote.app and the small white Apple remote to search and select. I'm just saying there is lots of potential here.

I hope Remote.app v1.2 contains some new features that we haven't seen yet.

I've been using Remote Buddy ever since my iMac and iPod Hi-Fi remotes both disappeared. Works great for EyeTV, Front Row, QuickTime Player, VLC, DVD Player, etc even though it's a web app. It also shows you what's on your iSight and extends the capabilities of your Apple Remote. 19.99 euros after the free trial, which I think is around $25.

Remote, AppleTV and rented movies

I know that the description for Remote is a utility to control your music and videos but I would like to be able to access the play screens for the movies I have rented on my AppleTV directly from Remote.

As it stands now, you can not see your rented movies from within Remote, so you must find the white remote to play the rentals.

I hope that Remote soon becomes a truly full featured controller for all my Apple stuff, bringing me fully into the digital world.

Am I correct in assuming you are able to use both Remote.app and the white remote with your AppleTV? When I tried, it's an all or nothing thing: I use Remote.app and the white remote will never work until a reboot of the AppleTV or doing the 're-pair' procedure.

Does using Remote.app disable the white remote for good? Even after I have closed Remote.app, the white remote won't work [but the AppleTV shows it is receiving commands from the white remote]. I guess you can't pair both Remote.app and a white remote to the same AppleTV?

I've never heard of this. I don't have an AppleTV but the remote to my computer works fine even though I also use Remote.app. How old is the remote? The batteries tend to die after a year or so of use.

The remote works great after I've forced a pairing of it after using Remote.app, so I don't think it is the batteries. I guess I need to try it again.

So you're saying you use the white remote and Remote.app with your Mac and it's not an "either/or"? If you're using Remote.app can you still use the white remote even if Remote.app is running? I can't. And even after quitting Remote.app, the white remote simply won't do anything on the ATV [but the light flashes at each key press!]. At least I can re-pair the remote after using Remote.app, but that seems very kludgy to me.

I use an app called Rowmote for exactly those purposes. It works on my iMac G4, and will work on most Macs with 10.4 or higher after you download a little background app that basically let's it talk to your computer. It's great, clean, and only costs 99 cents. :)

The new iTunes DJ and Remote.app are great together. This shows a lot of promise for parties. the ability to request a song to play and vote on the next song is great. Now if only everyone at the party had an iPhone!

With the original version of Remote, I have been able to see the artwork of what's playing, as well as control airtunes speakers... why is this listed as new features?

My apple remote application doesnt seem to be connecting to my library. I've installed the app onto my ipod touch and load to the screen where it says to enter this passoword. however when i open itunes nothing appears in the device section.....

any ideas?

They haven't fixed the worst problem with the remote app yet - TV shows are still listed in alphabetical title order instead of season/episode number.

As far as I can see, the only new feature with this update is the "iTunes DJ", which adds the track voting feature to the remote. Don't get me wrong, it's a cool feature, but Apple has utterly failed in their drive to invent new features and then convince us that we have always needed them. No, I still can't even conceive of a situation in which this would actually be useful. Maybe I move in the wrong social circles, but I've never been to an event presided over by real or amateur DJs where I felt the need to whip out my iPod and start messing around with wireless networking. I tend to get up and leave at that point instead, listening to my music on the way home rather than subjecting the rest of the party to my esoteric tastes. I suspect Apple's developers have been to even fewer of that sort of party than I have.

Besides, it still didn't fix my problem where I have to delete and re-add my library link every time I disconnect.

Ugh. I've been hoping for months now that one of these Remote/iTunes updates would fix my not being able to use Remote.app problem, but it still is not working. No matter what I do, iTunes on my Mac Pro won't show my iPhone as a remote in the Devices list, whereas iTunes on my PC netbook shows it. This is frustrating, as I have all of my music on my Mac Pro and wish to control that. :(

Is this one of the new features? I don't remember seeing these air tunes speakers on the app before. But this is really nice!

Shame.

In my case the update of either remote or iTunes suddenly allowed me to access my Vista (sigh) based itunes library.

I only recently got my first mac so I can´t say if the mac based itunes would have had the same problem.

I´m a happy bunny at the moment.
