The "smaller and cheaper iPad" is the one you put to the side when you buy a new one. Like an old iPhone, an old iPad Air is still perfectly functional and suitable for this purpose. Slap it in a stand plugged into the wall and you have this device already.

Thanks to the proliferation of trade in deals, including from Apple, I doubt most people hold onto old iPads when they upgrade.

If they are smart, they will launch something to compete with the Echo Show 15.

There is already a lot of iOS, iPadOS widgets that can be leveraged. Integrate AppleTV functionality and a remote.

The main problem with the Echo Show 15 is the poor amount of widgets and the lack of being able to sync with iOS/iPadOS/macOS reminders.

Call it HomeBase or something.

So this is a new version of the Home app, but a version that only works when physically connected to my home, and is only functional when I’m sitting in front of it? “Honey, can you sit down in front of the Home App and turn the downstairs light off while you’re up?”. Lovely.

I swear more often than not Gurman has nothing new to write about so he just regurgitates things he’s previously written.

Am i crazy in thinking this is 7-8 years too late? The Amazon Echo show came out in 2017

While this is the first rumor I've seen that references "cheaper price", I'm doubting Apple is interested in selling these that low. My working gut guess has been about $499 but- admittedly- that's just my guess. Apple just doesn't tend to do "cheaper." See products actually rolled out in the last year or so and you won't find many/any where the crowd is dazzled by the bargain pricing. And that- IMO- has been the primary problem with HomeKit everything to this point in time (11 years after launch). HomeKit inclusion adds a steep premium to the prices of all the stuff... stuff that works largely the same way for other platforms minus the fat cost premium.

But as that pricing is a guess and my counter is a guess, we only really find out when it arrives.
This isn’t the first rumor that’s referenced the cheaper price than an iPad, all of Gurman’s reports say the HomePad will be much cheaper and smaller than the iPad. And the cheapest iPad is $350.
Additionally, if you’ve been paying attention to the supply chain rumors, you’ll notice that all of the displays that have been connected to this product have been very low-end LCDs, even more lower end than the basic iPad.
Additionally, this display is not supposed to have the speaker built-in, but as an additional docking station sold separately. The device in its default state will just be a 6 inch square screen that can be mounted on a wall or on a dock.
The thing that actually could bring the price to $499 is that speaker dock, but seeing as Apple wants these screens everywhere they won’t price them that high.
Apple prices products lower when they expect you to buy multiple of them, think AirTags ($29), HomePod Minis ($99) and Apple TVs ($129).
I expect this HomePad to fit in with those. The real profit will be when people purchase four of them, different docking stations for each one.
$150 for the one that’s on the nightstand an extra $200 for the speaker, another $149 for the HomePad on the wall upstairs, another $150 for one downstairs…
The idea is that one day eventually no matter which room you’re in, no matter if you were wearing your watch or have your phone on you, have headphones in, it doesn’t matter, you will be able to control you’re home from all rooms.

Just what I need,..an iPad using old parts in a dock & with limited functionality. Thanks Tim!

Looks too small and light to be a boat anchor which would be best use if it were heavy. Where there is smoke there is fire and our country's economy is both hot and cold meaning instability.

A new gadget is not on everyone's mind. Regular Gasoline in Phoenix area has gone from $3.15 to $3.65 in an about a week. No oil embargoes going on. Oh, and there now is a $0.50 extra charge for each egg ordered at local restaurants.

So much for helping the little folks survive.

"A made-up concept of an Apple smart home hub"

Made-up? Who wrote this, a 10 year old?

Made-up and concept are kind of redundant, unless the point trying to be made was that this is a rendering, not an actual physical mock-up?
Maybe the caption author is finally admitting that all the renders of this upcoming device that have accompanied MacRumors articles (and no doubt all over the rest of the Internet too) have been so speculative as to have earned the description "made up".

And I think the concept is having a device that all family/household members can always find in the same location. A general-purpose mobile device like an iPad would tend to always be whisked away by someone.
Not if you glue it down

I'm going to guess it won't hold a candle to the power of Home Assistant. I think I'm going to go ahead and get the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 for my Home Assistant Yellow, and I'll keep automating with that. There's no way Apple could catch up with the world's second largest open source project.

As Cook and Jobs have said in the past, Apple's very careful about what products they bring out, and will not do things that they can't offer something better than what other manufacturers produce. Of course, that's always a matter of opinion, but I think they would never support all the things Home Assistant supports. They're going to use it to drive people to buy more Apple products.

Like Homey, which is another Home Automation hub based on Raspberry Pi. And now that LG has bought it, it's going to be focused on selling LG refrigerators, microwaves, TVs, etc. Home Assistant on the other hand is owned by a non-profit and cannot be sold to a corporate entity.

The most "green" and economic Apple could do is create HomeOS that can be installed on older iPad's. The only obstacle of an older iPad can be older wifi support. In certain situations older wifi standards could cause problems with camera streams.

If Apple does release a dedicated HomePad of some sort, I hope it gets an ethernet option with PoE (power over ethernet) support.

...Apple has a huge opportunity. I hope Apple also brings back the AirPort as a mesh system.

Please not. These days wifi cannot cover 10-20 feet distance without a deteriorated signal because the neighbours wifi is flooding the all same channels due to Mesh systems. I remember the days my old 1st gen Airport Express using only one channel could reach the next street (150feet away) with ease.
The Wifi Alliance should come up with a standard that can suffice with a very small 20MHz channel, not spilling over to the direct adjacent channels and still provide 1Gbps bandwidth. Making more efficient use of the frequency bands and allowing more AP's. We seriously have to get rid of the old wifi standards as soon as possible.

Expecting to hear about this only at WWDC especially since it is rumoured to run a new OS. Launch should happen soon after that.

Literally why when you can do all these tasks from an iPad without having to get up and go sit in front of this device.

Try replacing all of the light switches in your house with your iPad and you may become enlightened as to why there is value to certain devices always being in the same, predictable location

This part ... doesn't excite me

The last thing Apple needs is yet another "OS" to manage and resource for

so let's forget about having an OS that is designed for its purpose and just shoehorn an old OS into it?

Apple did that with the iPad and look how happy everyone is with iPadOS /s

Which ones do you get and are they easy to set up? And do they stay connected?

Bought some lights that haven't arrived yet, but the Govee plugs have been totally flawless for me.

I have these

At this point, we have vaporware. It does not exist except in the conjectoring in forums etc. Only when sitting in an Apple Store does it become hardware and then we all will actually know all the public specs and can chew on those.

🫤

I'm sort of interested in this, but by the time they release it and with how they'll price it or restrict it or "something", I'll probably be uninterested by the time it's even a thing
Probably one of the main reasons Apple hates leaks so much

I think for many people, an iPad will be fine. If you always have your iPad with you, you can use an iPad. Or your iPhone.

But I think this will be a multi-user device with a guest mode, so that everyone can use it, including guests, but different users will have access to different functions. It will recognize known users by their faces and/or voices.
