Surprise, surprise. The preliminary report was preliminary.

Not that this really clears up the confusion since there aren't standards for the reporting, but at least it gives a little context.

Stop dismissing the signs, Apple needs a huge wakeup call, switch up management, bring in new blood that has the tenacity and drive that Steve Jobs had, make Apple great again.

So..did you miss the memo about Apple hiring John Giannandrea to head AI last year? Maybe read some news before complaining about something that's already been addressed.

So much like iPhone unit sales, the numbers weren't good so we stopped reporting them.
They were at least 4 years late on that one. Samsung stopped reporting long ago and the others never reported. Why subject yourself to unnecessary scrutiny when you make 30 times more profit in a quarter than tech darlin’ Amazon and actually have proven you know how to transition to new markets with relative ease. Amazon doesn’t report unit sales either by the way.

The statistic I'd be most interested in is the number of accidents or near-accidents for a self-driving car versus the number for a comparable number of miles driven in a regular car by an average driver.

I don't expect that self-driving cars will ever be absolute perfect, but I'd like to know when they're better, on average, than we humans are.
Agree.
I'd also like it broken down to show (a) where the autonomous car was at fault and (b) where the other driver was at fault and the autonomous car couldn't avoid it.

Apple Maps and Siri have been in sleep mode for years under Cook's watch. Apple Music was late to the party, and revolutionary TV service is yet to show up. I think we need someone else to go.

Fascinating. And not surprising considering that Apple has a history of reporting numbers conservatively.

All that said, I still get a little ooky when I think about ceding control of my vehicle to a robot. I am typically an early adopter, but in the case of autonomous vehicles, I will happily wait until its proven beyond all reasonable doubt that I’m a Luddite.

Apple Maps is not industry leader.

Siri is not industry leader.

If Apple can't lead on these, trying to twist the disengagement stats and trying to put Apple in a better light is not going to help anyone.

Pretty much, but many would rather be in denial over the state of Apple and where it’s heading.. in some areas.

When the battery doesn’t have the required “health”...the car will throttle down the maximum speed?

Someday maybe emergency vehicles may have the transponder codes to take over your vehicle to stand down. Sort of like with Star Trek II when Spock ordered the Reliant to lower its shields.

Heaven forbid Apple not be ahead on EVERYTHING.

This is even worse news. If the car is making disengagements for non safety reasons that means it can't drive in a straight line?
No...it means the driver is taking over prematurely.

Maybe if we build WALLS in between lanes it would keep all the cars from going where they aren’t wanted.

I can agree with Siri but Apple Maps was garbage and is now my go-to navigation app.
Apple Music was maybe late but is there anything wrong with it now? I still prefer it over Spotify in the end.
TV yeah I don't really care about that part, I'm happy with Netflix.

Self driving cars. Remember them? I saw one in that Total Recall Film once.

  • Johnnycab: Hello I'm Johnnycab, where can I take you tonight?
    Doug Quaid: Drive, drive!
Johnnycab: Would you please repeat the destination?
Doug Quaid: Anywhere, just go, GO!
Johnnycab: Im not familiar with that address, would you please repeat the destination?

See the problem? And that was wayyyyy in the future. And don’t say it was just a film. I know. I saw it for myself.
  • So it must be true!

As far as Wall Street is concerned, Apple's autonomous car project is always going to be considered dead last and far behind Tesla and Google. Apple just doesn't get it. Considering all the money Apple has to spend on R&D, Apple never seems to have what it takes to become an industry leader on the things that could help Apple get rid of always being on the 'doomed' list. It's so annoying to have to constantly see articles about Apple being so far behind Amazon, Google and even Microsoft when it comes to AI. Of course, it could just be that Apple isn't disclosing as much information as those other companies are. I hope that's actually the case. Whatever. I'm probably missing what's really important and we'll only know for certain how well or poorly Apple is doing when actual products are released.

40,198 may be high, but just shows no one trusts autonomous vehicles just yet 100%.

We're currently "stuck" between worlds, that's what it is. Whoopee-Goldberg moment.
