Sheesh! The point of self driving cars is to reduce the chaos and death caused by human drivers. It's absurd to claim that self driving cars can't be allowed while there are human drivers.

Just face the facts: Autopilot — which is no where near as good as what will be autonomous driving — reduced Tesla's crash rate by 40% versus the same set of drivers without it. When (not if) it gets to level 5 autonomy, you can reasonably expect it to be five to ten times safer than humans. Asking if it will be 100% safe is also absurd, so just don't do it. Nothing is 100%, but autonomous driving will be much safer than human driving.

If you think that any engineer could possible conjure up any possible move another human inside of car could pull off while driving, then I believe that you are in for huge surprise.

I am NOT saying that what is inside of current cars that help humans recognize danger etc. is NOT improving on crash statistics. But they are NOT self-driving NOR autonomous which means self-government. Neither does TESLA.

The claim here is a self-driving car. And THAT axiom will remain the figment of the humans' imagination for 100 years to come... And by the time it will be ready, we won't drive cars no more.

Sure, and we should believe you, because you know more about it than all the engineers at all of the car manufacturers of the world. You know more than everyone at Apple, Tesla, GM, Ford, Volvo, Porsche, Nissan, and the list goes on. We should ignore the exponential growth rate of this and other technologies and trust you, because you know better. Nothing to see here folks, some guy on the internet says so!

No - you should not listen to me. Just listen to your common sense.
What wonders me about you is that you act as if the idea of a such a vehicle has just emerged because Apple is being rumored to test one... This idea has been around since forever. Its not like those fine car makers, you carefully care to list sat down at breakfast and read Mac Rumors a year ago and went - Oh - Why did WE not think of this....

Since the series Knight Rider from the early 80'ies with D. Hasselhoff anyone with a Tivo was exposed to this concept. And in the 80'ies the idea was OLD. This is 2017 and the idea is even older. DO you really believe that the entire automobile industry just slept and never thought about doing this themselves ? Or perhaps they did try and came to a conclusion that ended with one fact: No matter how hard you try - you will never be able to predict any possible scenario of what could happen in a serious situation.

To make the car steer straight for 8 hours on a free road with no cars - is a no brainer. A child with a wallet and a visit to Circuit-City could rig a car to do that. But make it do the right thing when a frozen pool of water covers the otherwise dry road in a curve - is an entirely different thing to manage. Or when it is in a Jam and is the last car of the jam and a truck with a sleeping driver approaches fast like a freight train - will the Apple Car make the decision of purposely driving off the road to avoid being smashed...

There a millions - no billions of things that WILL happen on the road and half of those haven't even happened yet. And to think that team of engineers lead even by Apple which is very fine could possible imagine all those unimaginable scenarios is just - impossible. Just by that notion an autonomous or self-driving car is just as realistic as claiming to be able to bypass gravity altogether just cuz we've got Aero Planes. Nice dream but not yet possible. Not IMPOSSIBLE but juuuust not quite there yet.

PS - This here aint no iPhone missing a call nor a MacBook Pro with Flawed Butterfly-Key design nor SIRI getting it all wrong or an iMac overheating just by reading emails. This here is YOUR daughter's or Son's LIFE on the line if there is just a slight glitch. And the Lord knows that in that regard Apple is full of glitches. Which doesn't matter because it is just an iPhone and nothing really important can be done with those. A car is real life and death situations - something responsible car makers have been dealing with since 100 years. Apple has NVER had to deal with situations worse than someone's phone loosing battery life or a kernel panic on a Mac. Nothing life threatening. I chose to put my trust in such regards into experienced hands. Alas Apple has zero experience in such matters !

That's about the only thing you've gotten right. A few points, and then I'll waste no more time on you:

The idea is always the easy part, but now, the hard parts are nearly complete. While much of the auto industry has indeed been sleeping (explaining why they're still selling ICE cars), computer hardware and software have been improving.

It is not necessary to predict all possible scenarios. It's only necessary to predict possible actions and reactions based on the current situation. Computers are very good at this. Far better in fact, than humans. All that's needed now is the right investments.

My guess is that Tesla will achieve it first, but Apple and Nissan may be close behind.

They did not sleep. And Computers and Hardware did not improve. They got worse. Outsourcing all over the place lead to declination in quality even with Mercedes and BMW.

I have two daughters and there is NO chance on this planet that I would EVER put those in to a self-driving car and tell it to take them to their grand mother... I seriously hope that you will NOT make that choice for yours if you have any !

That made me smile! Check this out:

Soon enough, you'll have a difficult choice to make. You can either use a self driving car, or you can pay through the nose to get insurance so you can drive it yourself. Oh it won't happen this year or next, but it's coming.

Thats a good one... But Tesla is Tesla - A car which can't drive further than 400KM if you step on it... Nice for Cities perhaps but who wants a car with such a poor milage. Here in Germany, people laugh at folks in teslas ;-)
80.000EURO and you can't even take it from Hamburg to Frankfurt. We hit 250 - 300 Km/h on the a-bahn and love it as the palms start sweating due to adrenaline. After 160 Kilometers you stop for gas cuz you just waisted 80 Liters in your 300 hp car going 280. That is life and that is awesome. Why on earth would I wanna let a self-driving car take all that fun away from me ;-)

But anyway, Elon has to do something to make it worthwhile buying a Tesla and perhaps he will have more success in the insurance business than with self-driving cars and rockets.

We could probably discuss this all night ;-)

Holy crap! It's like you just woke up and found that there's all this technology out there that you don't understand, and it scares you! Tesla sells cars that can go for months, if not years, without ever having to stop for fuel because you start off every day with a full "tank"! By the way, in Germany, people at BMW are scared of Tesla, and rightfully so:

SO try taking that car for a single drive of 650 KM...

You are wasting your own time...

Most owners won't get past 200 Miles on a one charge. Check Tesla Forums an owners. I know one personally and while he is reluctant to admit it, he's pissed about the non-milage he gets off his car. He says if you wanna drive a Tesla and have fun while doing it, it won't last you 50 Miles.

If Tesla cracks 1000 KM. I'll bite if at that point it doesn't look like a Toyota and chargers are all over. Until then, I'll get in my E500 and drive wherever I darn please and stop for gas (2 minutes) whenever I darn please.

And the good thing about all this, is you don't even need to be directly behind it to know its self driving... You can spot one of these cars a mile away. Just look out for the roof top.
