I think you'll find that most Android phones are actually sold at $200-300 to consumers, just like iPhones. And the BOGO or even free sales amount to desperation to sell a few more before next month's version comes out. Possibly even because they made too many, simple "supply higher than demand".

No, most android phones aren't sold at $200-$300. They start off high, then they are discounted later on. The reason they are discounted is because the phone is cheaper to buy from the manufacturer. Smartphones are like computers. They all use the same commodity parts, so they should get cheaper as time passes by. So when people brag about apple making so much profit all that means is that you're paying more for hardware that should cost less.
 
The impact of the iPhone is tremendous here. Just last year, I only saw 5 iPhones in one year. This year, I saw at least 100 iPhones.
