That would make sense if their competitors marketshare didn't double or triple for the same time period. Apple is throwing dollars away with their slow production and release schedule.

Give me a break. Apple is in a transition year. New product lines and redesigns have dictated a push to the fall for releases. This isn't how it will be from here on out of course, but would you rather have them releasing half-ass products like the iPad 3 only to replace it 6 months later?

Other companies release new tablets every 6 months from a huge variety of muddied product lines (Galaxy Tab 10.1 vs. Galaxy Note 10.1?). I prefer Apple's way - take their time, release a product when its ready and keep the product lines concise and efficient.

Despite the fact that everyone thinks Apple can just pop a retina display into the mini and they simply choose not to, there are limitations to today's technology that cause some of these products to be delayed. I think Apple learned from the iPad 3 mistake (making the iPad THICKER and heavier to accommodate the retina display) and are simply holding off until they can take the current mini form factor (that is PERFECT IMO) and add a retina display to it without sacrificing the amazing battery life or form factor.

2014 we'll see things return to normal. Product launches in the spring, summer and fall. IMO, they should release the iPhone in the beginning of the year and the iPad near Christmas time. Phones are less "impulse buys" because of contracts and such, whereas tablets are seemingly disposable (people buy new ones every year, multiple sizes for multiple uses).

I would like to see - iPhone 6 (larger iPhone) in the Spring, Macs (iPhone refresh as well) in the summer, iPads in the fall. Then move ALL iPhones to spring in 2015.

Funny how fanbois were not doubting the numbers when Apple market share was good.

Funny how Apple's share was based on actual numbers and not guesswork. All that being said, marketshare is useless. The only reason it is heralded by android users is because it is the only place where android leads, and that to without any real numbers to back it up and a conglomeration of hundreds of competing companies lumped together.

About as useless a stat as possible no matter who it benefits.

Holy crap... look at "Others"... is that all those cheap tablets in China and India? Must be no-name whitebox tablets that sell for $80

Meh... Apple is still doing fine. Market share is a data point... but it's not the only point.

Imagine if there was only one grocery store in your town. It would have 100% of the grocery business... or 100% market share.

Now imagine if there are two grocery stores in your town. The market share will change.

Both stores can be profitable... both stores can be successful. But that first store will never have the same market share as it did when it was all alone.

And that's what people are forgetting. Everyone is saying "The iPad used to have 98% market share... now it has fallen to 32%..."

Hold on... Apple is actually selling more iPads now than they did 3 years ago.

But the entire industry has grown. Lots of manufacturers... lots of tablets pumped out into the market. That's what market share is... all products from all manufacturers in a given quarter.

It doesn't mean Apple is doing anything wrong.

That's what happens you release everything in the fall.

Apple, listen:

iPad mini in the fall (October), iPad in the Spring (March).

iPhones in July

Macbook Pro/Macbook Air in August

iMacs/Mac Mini between 2x a year April and Novemeber perhaps.

Somehow I doubt the most valuable company in the world is listening to you..

This makes sense. But I bet price has alot to do with this also.

The average tablet user (internet/mail) Will see no difference between and iPad and other tablets except on price.

Same reason the Surface had such poor numbers.

I'm convinced that normal people have an "Apple" budget. Right up there with higher priced things like the mortgage, kitchen remodels and new cars.

You can only buy (afford) so many new iDevices in a 3 year period.

The fall releases are synced with the yearly IOS update.

The high % in "others" really surprises me.

Acer (vendor in position 5) only has 3.1% marketshare, yet others make up 38% of the remaining market.

I could only list one or two others from memory (Amazon Kindle, MS Surface...).

Does anyone have access to the full report?

I like the web usage statistics. It shows how devices are used. It seems like a lot of other tablets are purchased and then never used after a short period.

When you count "Shipments", as in tablets shipped to retailers, and you lump an iPad in with tablets like these:

http://microcenter.com/product/405459/d2_Pad_(D2-711)_Tablet_-_Black

http://microcenter.com/product/403745/A701_Tablet_-_Grey

http://microcenter.com/product/410598/d2_Pad_Tablet_(D2-721-BK)_-_Black

,and look at http://microcenter.com/search/search_results.aspx?N=4294954920&NTX=&NTT=&NTK=all&sortby=pricelow for plenty more wonderful tablets that I'm sure compare favorably with the iPad on features, then it's no wonder your numbers start to look bad for the iPad.

With Apple keeping a tight supply chain, they get hurt in these types of "shipped" not "sold" analysis.
Cook was right when he said he "was not sure what all those other tablets are being used for".
I have an idea, display space in big box retailers.

And it will regain the lead once again when the new iPads are launched because there are no other tablets out there that can even touch the iPad.

Why is this even front page news?

lenovo makes tablets? who knew

Me. I bought a lenovo touchpad (windows 8) a month or 2 ago, primarily to try it out and see how it worked. It wasn't IIRC a surface tablet. Needless to say I don't own it anymore.

Hard to believe, these figures are! Sure, we see a lot of Android phones in the wild these days, but Android tablets?! Who's buying them all? Chinese and Koreans?

Funny how fanbois were not doubting the numbers when Apple market share was good.

Market share is a silly metric for fanboys of either side to get excited about.

I guess it's cool when there are only two major players in a single industry because the numbers are soooo different.

Mac vs Windows
iPad vs Android Army
iPhone vs Android Army

One huge number against one small number. That's a sexy headline.

But what happens when there are multiple players in an industry? Are there fast food fanboys who examine the market share of McDonalds vs Burger King vs Wendy's vs Taco Bell vs Subway etc?

That wouldn't be too exciting... it's not a David vs Goliath situation.

Also... it's amazing to see what Apple can do with so little market share. The Mac is 5% of the computer market... but it's the most profitable computer line in the world. I'm not saying profit is the most important thing... (who am I kidding... it's the most important thing in business)

It shows that the other guys sell more units... but make less money doing so.

Wait... doesn't that mean Apple is actually doing a better job? Isn't it sort of a failure to do more work but have less to show for it?

In other words... more market share doesn't mean a damn thing :)

Polaroid makes a tablet that's scary.

It's a freaking picture frame. They sell them at the Sam's Club near me, but I guess it runs Android, so that makes it a tablet. It has some crappy interface to select the photos that you want to display, and it runs some really choppy transitions.

I'm sure Apple will have a great 4th quarter but they really need to start spreading out their updates.

For the first time I'm starting to think maybe Tim wasn't the man for the job.
