Apple's Studio Display vs. Dell's Latest $655 27-Inch UltraSharp Monitor

Last week, we compared the Apple Studio Display to the much cheaper and feature rich Samsung M8 Display, and the comparison was popular with MacRumors readers, so we thought we'd pit the Studio Display against yet another competing option, Dell's UltraSharp 27-inch "U2723QE" 4K USB-C Hub Monitor.

Priced at $655 on sale, Dell's 27-inch UltraSharp display is the same size as the Studio Display, but it's 4K rather than 5K and it maxes out at 400 nits brightness rather than 600, so the HDR isn't as good, nor is the color accuracy.

It has a simple design that's not up to par with the design of the Studio Display, but it does come with several USB-C and USB-A ports, as well as an HDMI port and a DisplayPort. It also supports 90W power delivery, so it's going to work with any of Apple's notebooks, though it won't charge the 16-inch machines at full speed.

I think the Studio Display is absurdly overpriced for a 6 year old panel, but the Dell is only 4K, does not have a camera and does not have a six speaker array. About they only thing similar is that they're both monitors.

It can be full 2x retina if you don't mind things onscreen being larger than Apple has deemed as "correct".
Some even prefer that (things larger and easier to see)

My spouse is one of those - she loves her 27" 4k external at effective 1080p resolution.

You learn to dislike the choices in this marketplace. The dell is just another 400 cd/m² brightness display, not useful for HDR.

That's a tad misleading given the distance one holds a phone is very different from how far away a monitor sits.

A 27 inch 4K monitor becomes retina at about 21 inches away. So in that sense you can say it qualifies as a Retina display. I myself have a 27 inch 4K monitor from LG and I can't even differentiate the pixels when I put my face up to it.

But also it's almost a full $1000 cheaper.

Nope, that's not how Retina works. You can still see the pixels at 1080p on the Dell monitor, it's DPI is far too low.

I own one myself, and every day I say, "Is today the day I dump this turd and get a Studio Display"?

That would not be Retina at typical distances. We want a 5.5K 30 inch monitor. I'd pay $2,500 for that, no problem.

Personally, I would like a 6K 27” monitor. I have a 4K 27” LG IPS display (which cost me $300k and has an awful ‘HDR 400’ mode that is better never used) and putting it in ‘scaled 1440p’ doesn’t give me enough workspace, I need more than that. Scaling it a notch higher to 6k-like is nice but blurry. Oh and it would need to be OLED, have Atmos speakers and cost 1k. See you in twenty years?
