Remember when Macs were made out of plastic and no one said anything bad about plastic?

I do.
There have been bad things said about plastic(s) for years. Not surprising, though, as there’s been bad things said about pretty much anything you can think of.

Rumor is they will be launching an Apple Studio Display S later this year (available in 5 colors), with the Apple Studio Display Pro in 2Q 2023 with ProMotion and a Studio Display ProMax widescreen version.

Re. brightness: On my 2015 27" iMac, I rarely crank it all the way up, or it'll just about burn my eyeballs. Do other people use their displays at full brightness? Does a monitor with more brightness capability equal a better image even when brightness is turned down a bit?

I really wish more folks would take Apple to task for making good healthy human ergonomics something you have to "pay extra for". It's absurd.
I’m pretty sure there are thousands, (maybe millions?) actively taking Apple to task for making good healthy human ergonomics something you have to “pay extra for”. It’s just that those people taking Apple to task are not the people Apple expected to buy the monitor anyway.

When you compare the Apple and LG Display…

saying the difference is $300 is misleading.

Since LG can be height adjusted and the height-adjustable Apple Display is $1999..…

It’s fair to say that the price difference is $700 ($1299 to $1799)

Agreed - the direct price comparison really should include the $400 extra for the ASM so that both are height adjustable. That's the most direct comparison possible here.

To your point - they are $700 apart.
Pretty staggering.

I've been shopping a 32" 144hz 4K Gigabyte monitor (M32U) -- it's $735 for the entire thing
Not 5k I know - Just giving an example of what $700 can get you these days

If it wasn't for that added $400 height adjustment option, the Studio display would be a much better value than the LG. But … nope. Tim Apple is being Tim Apple.

Amazing to me that "software" is to blame for the camera -- and they didn't notice and shipped it like this?

Going to be fascinating to see if that's really true -- or if Apple cut some corners here on the camera.
Jason snell didnt have any issues with his camera. I suspect it was a weird software issue that effected some but not all units, hopefully fixed soon.

Completely agree.

Include the height adjustable stand as default and it's a clear value winner over the LG UF5k
Clear winner for me since I use a VESA mount, plus I'm getting a better case, picture, sound and a processor inside it and I'm sure the camera will be fixed. I'm curious as to what they have in store for the processor.

Aside from very obvious thermal issues when it comes to plastic vs. metal, I don't have an issue with plastic products when its possible to make them, especially when they save money.

The studio display is unnecessarily expensive, and the metal is a lot of the reason.

You're paying the same amount for no stand as people who get a stand. And neither you gets a choice in that matter after the fact. I'm not going to reward Apple for that.

The problem with the Studio Display is just knowing what it could have been.

The displays on the 14” and 16” MacBook Pros are absolutely beautiful and I think people expected the same level on this display, especially for the $1600 price tag. Then they ask $400 more for an adjustable stand, and add a non-removable power cable..it’s just odd.

For that price, it should have all the tech from the MacBooks. HDR, 120hz with variable refresh rate, mini-LED.

Really a disappointment knowing what they could have done..
But then it would have been the Pro Display XDR. The ProDisplay XDR is not a promotion display. If they added all that tech they wouldn't sell any of the more expensive displays. I do agree, however, that it should have HDR.

From the story: "The Studio Display also wins out when it comes to color and contrast, as it looks just a bit more vibrant than the UltraFine while offering deeper blacks and crisper bright areas without blowing out the highlights."

If I were in the market for a 5K display (I won't settle for anything less), the Apple Studio Display would be an instant purchase. Especially with the extra features.

For adjustability get the VESA mount version if you can mount one to your desk or wall. I've got one for a 27" LG 4k. Assume there on VESA stands that sit on a desk too. Also have an iMac sitting on blocks which works too. Cool NOT.
Fine, except they charge $1600 for the VESA mount version, and doesn't come with the expensive, Apple-designed stand, that should be one of the reasons to buy this product in the first place. I'm not going to subsidize this poor design by Apple.

They should have made 1 version with VESA mounts built in ($999), and upsold the regular stand ($1499), and adjustable stand ($1899), both of which should connect to the VESA mount.

The fact that they didn't do this is why I won't buy any configuration of it.

Does anyone take off $$ for no stand? No, so I'm not going to complain about Apple not doing it either. I have a lot of cheap ****** plastic stands in the basement that I do not use that will eventually end up in a landfill some where. At least I'm helping the environment a little.
