This might put me in the stone age, but I am wondering if I can run this adapter into FW800>FW400.

It might put me in the stone age, but I have an audio console I really like that still uses the ol' 400.

...All in all, trying to go FW400>TB.

Thoughts?

With the appropriate plug adapter, of course.

There are to many extra connectors you need to run the Macbook Pro retina display now. CD drive plus these two connectors. annoying
Most of the time, no connectors. If you need a CD Drive, ethernet, and ethernet connected all or most of the time, buy a different computer.

UK price £25, US price $29

Canadian price $29.

That's funny because one Canadian dollar is worth slightly less than a US dollar.

Apple's new trend it to have the same prices in Canada and USA (1 CAD=1 USD). The rMBP is cheaper to buy in Canada too! :)

Why the hell is Apple hitching their wagon to thunderbolt and firewire anyway? Just go with the standard USB 3.0 and HDMI and stop wasting people's money. A fraction of computers are Macs and an even smaller fraction of those Mac users do things that require either.

My biggest beef with these adapters is that they are not chainable.

The only way would be to make it thicker, but that would make the ULV processor useless so why not just get a 13" MBP?

Because Apple's SSD upgrade prices are as ridiculous as they are, making the MBP a really bad deal IMHO. (And even if you get the SSD, it will replace the HDD, not the crappy DVD drive.)

I think if Apple offered an SSD MBP, or even an SSD+HDD MBP for a fair price, most of us MBA whiners would never have gotten an MBA. :(

well, i need portable computer (soon new MBA will replace my 13" MBP) and when I'm at home I hook my laptop on my 40" LCD TV and I need ethernet and I need my FW disk. So yeah, I do agree it's a bit pain in the ass. A hub or something like that would be nice and by hub I don't mean ACD or iMac :)

Why do you need a TB to ethernet adapter when you can use a USB to ethernet adapter? Please don't bring up the 'faster interface' argument as ethernet connections typically run at a tiny fraction of their theoretical speed.
Well if you don't want the correct answer, what would you like to hear? The thunderbolt to ethernet adapter is faster than the USB to ethernet adapter. The USB adapter from Apple connects at 100Mbps, and the thunderbolt adapter is a gigabit ethernet device.

The Canadian, US, and Australian dollars are pretty close (the Aussie is worth the most). Between Canada and the US, the two have traded places several times over the last few years over which is worth more, but it generally doesn't stray more than few cents from parity.

How about a dual Firewire + Ethernet Apple.

That would be a great idea to take advantage of the throughput.

For use with Thunderbolt drive and non TB Macs?

Do you think we'll be able to use this port to connect a Thunderbolt hard drive to a Firewire 800 port on a Mac?

They barely run at their full theoretical speed? Here in sweden 100Mbit/s broadband is fairly common, and 1000Mbit/s is availible to for about 70$ a month. Gigabit ethernet is also better if you want to move files over a network, which is very popular now when NASes are availible at a very cheap price.

UK price £25, US price $29

$29 = £18.59 (at $1 - 64.1182p)
+10% = £20.45 (Apple standard amount to cover exchange rate fluctuations)
+20% = £24.54 (VAT)

So yes, you are right to be mad as Apple is ripping off the UK to the tune of a massive 46p.

GbE can easily sustain over 110 MB/sec, which is not a "tiny fraction" of its theoretical 125 MB/sec.

Please explain.

100mb/s ethernet is old and slow. You're looking at about 11MB/s actual transfer speed. Upgrading to gigabit is a huge upgrade. Even if you only got triple that speed, you're looking at 15 minutes of transfer instead of 45 minutes.

Ethernet should really be BUILT INTO the Macbook Air.

Why? when most of the connections will be WiFi, why bother? If you want the old port, get an old computer. At least with the adapter, there will be a way for the few occasions one would need to connect to a wired connection to be able.

The idea behind the MBA is portability. Get an MBP if you want the jack.

Yes my friend, just get a firewire 400 to 800 cable (like 6 bucks in Amazon) and you'll be all set. Still I think Apple should charge less for an adapter..
