I need a Mac Mini, I'm going to wait until the 2013 refresh.
NOPE.
I need a Mac Mini, I'm going to wait until the 2013 black friday deal.
NOPE.

I've had mine for 3 weeks now. The Mini never gets discounted. No sense in waiting.

Feels quiet on this site today. I guess people are out getting deals :D

Got an iPad Air for my parents last night with a $30 rebate (Canada)

Apple is a for-profit company with known high margins. However, you can get lower prices from some of their resellers. I think their sale pricing policy makes sense, since it enables independent resellers to continue to exist.

Wrong, Apple has perceived high margins. Unless you have concrete proof that after their engineering, design, manufacturing, advertising and packaging they have high margins then it's not "known".

Thanks for explaining to the world how to spend the amount on a gift card. I don't know what the world would do without your help.

I don't know why people feel entitled to discounts. There's people on these forums that are so blatantly materialistic and greedy and that is quite shocking. There's more important things in life than spending loads of money on Apple products. And if you don't spend the money on these luxury items, don't complain about spending too much money. These are all 'want' as opposed to 'need' items.

It’s wrong for people to be greedy and materialistic but it’s perfectly fine for Apple to be greedy and materialistic. Interesting logic.

I lingered. :( Missed out on Staples. Being a student I can really only buy when on sale too. Where did you go?

Apple Store experience today

Just wanted to post about my experience today....I purchase a IPad Air on opening day....I saw the specials they were offering today...so...I packed up IPad Air and returned it....I was able to return the original Air....get a new Air and get the $75.00 gift card....I took the $75.00 gift card and bought a new Apple TV and got the $25.00 gift card for buying an Apple TV...the sales folks we're great...so if you bought on opening day you can take advantage of the gift card specials today....

Cannot uprate this enough.

Exactly! A billion people in the world without clean drinking water, but let's whine that our luxury items aren't a few dollars cheaper on this one day of the year.

Talk about first-world problems.

Ordered an iPad Air 32GB WiFi from the canadian Apple store.

I was definitely buying a Smart Cover anyways, so the 75$ is an ok deal. If Apple had done a 10% off, I most likely would've gotten the 64GB.

Now the problem is the Smart Cover is 45$, and I want a sleeve that's 29.95$, so total is 74.95$ which is 5 cents below the free shipping limit. :D
What's the cheapest thing you can order on the Apple Store?

Here's a good question. If I elect to pick up an iPad Air at a store of my choice, but have to wait until it ships to the store, do I still qualify for today's gift card deal?

Your greed and self righteousness is quite abhorrent. You are aware that no one is obligated to give you money off these items!?

It's not just you, there are a lot of others in the other Black Friday threads that have the same mindset. I'd advise you, as well as all the others, to take a look in the mirror and decide if you really want to be 'that' sort of person.

Your obsequious fealty to corporate greed and self-righteousness is quite abhorrent. You are aware that no one is claiming Apple is "obligated" (your word) to give money off these items? As I'm sure you're aware that no one prefers that a prospective discount applies only after purchasing an item at regular price and not before, as occurs with most discounts? People naturally get annoyed at this shell game. And you have the nerve to blame people for that?

I'd suggest it's YOU who needs to look in the mirror and decide if you really want to be 'that corporate shill'.

Now on your bike..

Where did you get the idea people feel entitled to discounts? Are discounts being offered? Yes. Do people like discounts? Yes. Does that make people "blatantly materialistic and greedy"? Probably no more materialistic and greedy than the companies offering the discounts.

Why don't you let people decide for themselves what their wants and needs are?

What exactly is your problem?

Pretty sure on Black Friday everything is free shipping. I'm in Canada and planning to do the same thing (order a Smart Cover as well as an extra charger) and the Smart Cover lists as free shipping on its own.

Wrong, Apple has perceived high margins. Unless you have concrete proof that after their engineering, design, manufacturing, advertising and packaging they have high margins then it's not "known".
It's all in the SEC filings (as Dave-Z mentions above) and they reveal a fair amount in their conference calls.

Apple's operating margin is 28.67% per Yahoo Finance.

"Operating Margin is a ratio used to measure a company's operating efficiency. It represents the difference between the Total Revenues and the Total Operating Costs divided by Total Revenues, and is expressed as a percentage. Total Operating Costs consist of: (a) Cost of Goods Sold (b) Total (c) Selling, General & Administrative Expenses (d) Total R & D Expenses (e) Depreciation & Amortization and (f) Total Other Operating Expenses, Total."

R&D is not part of COGS, it's a separate line item in their consolidated statement of earnings. Those are the engineering and design items listed above.

There's a separate line item for SG&A. That covers advertising. That also covers things like employee salaries, the electricity bill for their bricks-and-mortar stores, the gold leaf toilet seat liners in Jony Ive's private bathroom (just kidding), etc.

Profit margin is Operating Margin minus taxes.

Apple is pretty profitable compared to other hardware electronics companies (Samsung, Acer, HP, Dell, etc.); they're publicly disclosed numbers attest to it.

At some point, you may wish to learn how to read a public company's financial earnings statements. Public companies are required by law to disclose a certain amount of information on their operations, so shareholders (including prospective investors) have some sort of understanding on the management's effectiveness in operating the company.

If you ever decide to invest (whether it be directly in the form of equities, or indirectly through mutual funds), you are highly advised to learn a bit about reading financials.

I get free shipping if I only put the Smart Cover in my cart. If I add the sleeve, it says "Add $0.05 more to get Free Shipping" and I have to pay 6$ shipping.

Free shipping is probably just on Apple branded stuff. Oh well, who cares for a few dollars. I'm not sure I'll get the gift card today anyways.

Apple is a publicly traded company. They release total sales, gross margin, and net income numbers, as well as total unit sales for each product line. While they don't release enough detail to know specifically how much they earn on each individual product or item, their high margins are known within a reasonable range compared to other companies.

You may be right, on both points.

Experience tells me some third-party items are dropped shipped from the manufacturer directly. That's probably the reason you're seeing a shipping cost.

Also, I just placed my order and it says the virtual gift card will be sent when the item ships. Doesn't matter too much to me. It's my Christmas gift anyway. :)

Back on topic, you might have more luck placing your order by phone. An actual human being might recognize that 5-cents isn't much and give you the free shipping. Couldn't hurt to try.

... but, I just bought an MBP Retina about a week ago. Even though I didn't buy it on Black Friday, does anybody think the Apple Store would be generous enough to give me a gift card? I mean, technically, I could return the same MacBook and re-buy it to get the discount, but ... do they ever just do this just to be nice?

Just return it and get the gift card. They might have to do that anyway in order to give you the gift card.

Extremely unclear if this applies to EDU purchases. The Education website has the HUGE banner up top that specifically mentions the Black Friday special with a free gift card but there is no indicator at check out that the gift card has been added.

Give it a rest, I'm not the one with a hundred billion in the bank, running ads telling everyone what great deals I'm offering, maybe you missed that.

Just took my new iPad air back to the store and they gave me the $75 gift card.

I bought it within the last 14 days.

They basically returned it as a closed box item and sold it back to me with the GC. Took 5 min. No hassle.

Wrong. As a publicly traded company Apple reports their profit margins every quarter. And they are high every quarter. It is a very well known fact.
