"High-End Noise-Canceling Market" is going to be my new favourite phrase.

I am definitely in the "High-End Noise cancelling Market" in the moment - bring it on Apple

When it comes to noise cancellation, Bose is the only real game in town, though. Their noise cancellation is great and it's the reason I got their headphones, even if they're ungainly and the actual audio is comparatively poor.

Apple could definitely make something that was probably nicer and better sounding than Bose at the sameish price, and I'd be happy.
It is said that the latest Sony noise cancelling headphones are rivalling or are even better than Bose - i haven't test both but read about the Sony headphones a few times now.

Apple has become a poor imitation 'me-too' company, releasing boring, copycat products late to market and with over-the-top pricing to boot! I can just imagine them busy at work on a "magical" $49 mouse pad or some similar trifle.

Because of course Apple made the very first MP3 player, smartphone, tablet, and smartwatch... that people didn’t whine and complain about in their first iterations.

If they can make something nice like Master & Dynamic's MW60, I'll be really happy. So all leather and aluminum design, no plastic crap like Beats.

What better to pair with a $1200 iPhone X than a $600 pair of headphones! They should fly off the shelf (just like the X).

Obviously Apple came to the conclusion that Beats wasn' the right brand for the introduction of the high-end line...

A $1200 phone I don't understand and will never pay for. But a $600 pair of headphones (even though its still a lot of money) I kinda do. A good quality pair will not only sound better and bring you more joy if you love music, but should also last much, much longer than a phone which is outdated in a few years.

I’m sure Apple believes they can walk and chew gum at the same time but how about they focus on their core products first.

iOS 11 has been a mess. High Sierra has had too many bugs. The Mac mini and Mac Pro are waiting for a refresh. The MacBook Pro needs to be rethought. No future development on AirPort products. No more Touch ID.

But somewhere was a group of people asking for Apple-branded headphones and Apple is about to deliver. I’m happy for those people.
You realize different people work on these different things, right? Lets put the audio experts on iOS, that'll fix things. DERRRP.

Apple is the same as it has always been. It takes an emerging product category with a frustrating user experience and deliver a polished product made possible by its control over both the hardware and software.

I for one don't mind Apple working on "boring" stuff if it means they can put their own unique spin on things. I certainly don't regret getting the AirPods and Apple Watch.

Apple was practically giving them away with the purchase of any iPad or Mac during their back to school promotion. Whatever brand value Beats may have had is long gone in my eyes.

.

Yes Apple. Just drop everything else. Please? Have everyone work on core products. Prefereply just Macs. And just forget about the rest.

You may not know that Apple, with more than 60,000 non-retail employees, is organized into different groups. And that the group the focuses on audio/music-related products is different than groups that focus on iOS/macOS and Macintosh hardware.

That' not a very fair assessment, IMO. Yes, it's true that audio people are not going to be designing the next gen AMOLED display, but that's really not the point. Apple has numerous times pulled teams off of one project to work on another, but even more, Apple is well known to simply not putting enough focus INTO a project to actually bring it to its full potential, such as when they kept Apple TV as a "hobby" for years. Just because they have people working on it doesn't mean that they have the BEST people working on it, or that the company is actually focusing on bringing a cutting edge, top quality, market-changing product to the customer.

Wouldn't it be ironic if they were wired headphones.

I agree with your assessment that Apple has been sloppy in implementation. Remember there's no Steve Jobs to stop garbage from coming out anymore. High Sierra was supposed to fix the bugs in Sierra similar to how Snow Leopard fixed Leopard. Perhaps they need an even higher Sierra, like "Summit Sierra" to fix the bugs in High Sierra. :)

Hope you're right. I still have couple constant issues in iOS 11 with my new X. The big bug that I have to reboot in order to fix, is when sending photos. The phone often hangs at the attach screen and nothing stops it hanging including killing the app. I have to restart the X and then I can send photos via iMessage or an email.

You might want to schedule a visit to the Genius Bar. I have made and sent photographs everyday since owning my X in December, and have yet to have any problems.

Go into a Best Buy 4-5 years ago and the entire headphone section was Beats. Now Beats occupy one tiny corner amongst many other brands. I still argue Beats was a stupid acquisition even if it was pocket change for Apple. They didn’t need Jimmy Iovine to start up a music streaming service. There’s little evidence any success Apple Music has is because of Jimmy Iovine. And the fact Apple is developing its own non-Beats branded headphones and speakers just says Apple believes a sizeable chunk of its customers won’t buy anything Beats. The success of AirPods shows Apple didn’t need Beats to get into the audio accessories game. Seems to me there was no strategic reason to acquire Beats and Eddy Cue got snookered by Jimmy Iovine.

Right because no garbage every happened on Steve Jobs watch.

Should Apple take the same pricing strategy as it did with HomePod, which is at least $100 higher than the closest rival product from Sonos, then customers can expect the rumored headphones to be a top-tier premium audio accessory with a price tag to match.

This line doesn’t make any sense. HomePod is cheaper than Google Max and the other premium Sonos speaker, those are its comparable, not the lower ends.

But it would make more sense to look at how AirPlay is priced since they’re, you know, headphones.

The money is that the value of Beats was getting the personnel involved more than anything else. They don't seem to be positioning Beats as a premium product, otherwise they would have just gotten rid of the brand and gone ahead with Apple. Beats are "cool" in a different way than Apple and they seem interested mostly in harnessing that.

I imagine, for many, a $400 pair of headphones makes more sense than a $400 speaker. I look forward to seeing what they'd do design wise, to differentiate it from Beats.

-- edit --

Oh, and Airplay headphones? That's an interesting prospect, and I imagine they'll do it (or I hope that they will).

Well said. Not to mention Beats aren't known for enjoyment of high-fidelity audio. Got a pair of Beats as a promotion last August when I bought an iPad. I had to mark the new set down to 35% of what Apple charged in stores to get them sold in Seattle. Happy for those who need Apple headphones, but I wish they'd focus on what made them successful.

Well said, very succinct. That's true with every single product Apple has developed.

You really think WiFi base stations are (or could be) one of Apple's "core products" and not music playback?
