Apple recently rolled out its updated 3D mapping experience in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, according to both Apple's iOS 15 features page and reports on Twitter.

With the launch of iOS 15 in September, Apple introduced an updated Apple Maps experience with 3D maps that feature additional detail and custom-designed landmarks in select cities.

At launch, the updated Maps app was limited to major cities like Los Angeles, New York City, London, and San Francisco, but Apple has been working to expand it to additional areas. Back in November, Apple brought the 3D Maps experience to Washington, D.C. and San Diego.

As of now, the detailed city experience for Apple Maps can be accessed in London, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego, Washington D.C., and the San Francisco Bay Area.

iOS 15.2 added these new looks to CarPlay for the first time too, supposedly, right? Or did I misread that somewhere...

If there’s one segment of improvements Apple has made, it’s definitely been with Apple Maps. Even from three years ago, the changes have been significant. It’s clutch in my area, and is my go-to.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art lit-up must be night mode; nice.

It might be cool if we could access security camera views from places like Philadelphia Museum of Art. See the little camera on the 3D model...touch it...and get the security camera view.

Strange to go into that amount of detail with the direction of lighting on the building. Wonder if its automated in some way like the trees.

I care more about the Maps software giving me good directions to where I'm going than how pretty it looks. I live in the Boston area and am constantly appalled at how often I'm taken to my destination via ridiculously long or obtuse routes that have nothing to do with traffic conditions.

Apple Maps biggest issue for me is the lack of a street view of sorts for anything that’s not a major city. I knew it wouldn’t come out right away, but it’s been several years now and for me personally, they aren’t close to being a replacement for Google Maps, which is a shame because I otherwise enjoy how Apple Maps in embedded into iOS. In due time, I suppose.

Dunno why this isn’t a available for all regions and cities yet. The nav in my car had this for ages and the file is literally less than 80 MB. Plus actual store logos on the map instead of generic gas pump logos.

I hear you, can’t even get 3d satélite view here in Reno Nevada, yet I can go “Look Around” (street view) to remote camping sites in south-west Western Australia… loved seeing Conti’s campgrounds off Caves Road. Loved zooming down London Court in Perth But I don’t understand Apple’s deployment logic. Hey one of the world’s biggest cities with more than 20 million doesn’t get updated satellite views.

Aside from design, I hope apple maintains accuracy and keeps its map up-to-date, unlike Google Maps.

I feel keeping it up to date all the time is nearly impossible. Especially since Apple doesn’t really encourage crowdsourced corrections. Google had a special program for that once that featured some perks for contributors. Apple should consider something like that.
