It’s only twice the price of a 970 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD 1TB, what a bargain!

Apple may make fine phones, iPods and tablets (All of which I own.) but they priced me/forced me out of their computer market 10 years ago due to things like this.

Frustrating they don't just use M.2. Im sure they could have used some software encryption to tie it to the T2 chip.
They can't...the T2 chip acts as the SSD controller and Apple's blades are simply dumb NAND modules. An m.2 module has an SSD controller onboard (typically, Phison), which isn't going to play well with the T2. Apple using m.2 is a non-starter.

Yea, and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD is like $200. With a compatible board, they can support read/write up to 5000/4400 MB/s

So, in addition to the mac pro that costs an arm and a leg, you also need a second mac to restore the mac pro after you swapped the SSDs. Great!

The ps5 will probably cost 400 or 500€ and has a built in 850gb SSD with a speed of 5,5 GB per second. How in gods name can apple charge so much for an inferior ssd and not be ashamed. I’m really considering switching to PC world after 14 years of apple.

Man, I need to ask whoever at Apple priced 1TB of storage for $600 where they get their crack from, cuz it's gotta be the good stuff.
Apple has 500+ stores, 130,000+ employees and $3 billion a month in operating expenses they’ve got to cover. Their net profit margin of about 20% pales in comparison to other companies.

Sure, Apple has some expensive products. But they’re not overpriced, are they?

I put 1TB flash storage in my MacBook Pro. It cost me $110. There's like two or three companies that make the majority of all NAND flash storage chips, which then get re-branded and packaged. Apple is insanely overpriced.

That actually gets you a SSD controller chip package and its DRAM too. These don't even have that. The bill of materials is even lower cost. In somewhat fairness is ti more NAND packages for the Apple solution. ( but yeah paying Samsung for their V-NAND (vertical) so don't need as many packages. )

P.S. it would help alot if Apple would couple some wear performance stats to these things. If it is 30-40% better endurance some of this surcharge is probably worth it. ( since a failure or substantively detaching the cards basically wipes out the data. ). Want to plug them in and they work for the typical entire service life of this Mac Pro system.

There’s a lot more that goes into total cost than just BOM cost.

If you go out to eat, that plate of pasta that costs $14.99 has about 20¢ worth of spaghetti in it. $12-13 goes to rent, labor and other non-food costs. Try telling them you can get a pound of pasta for 50¢ and see how far you get 🙂

That’s apples and oranges.

If you’re willing to pay $5 for a 99 cent box of pasta, that’s your right as a consumer.

If you’re trying to tell the rest of us that one part we can buy for $200 is worth $600 and not only do we need to put in in ourselves but need a second machine to make it work is justifiable buddy, that’s your perspective.

We all know how many devices Apple sells.

This is one major reason their computers/PC’s are a complete joke. I’m all in on the Apple ecosystem except for my desktop.

All of the following applies to the iMac. They’re selling 8th generation Intel when 10th generation is on shelves. They sell 8GB of RAM upgrades for what 16GB of faster RAM can be had for. Their graphics cards are demonstrably bad compared to PC’s in the same price point and AMD only doesn’t help. If you think 1TB of SSD storage is fairly priced at $500 or anyone besides them is using a hybrid drive?

See what an educated PC buyer would say if you told them they were going to get an AMD RX 560 in a $1,500 machine.

Well, if you agree with all of the above you might be an Apple fanboy.

"This puts a bit of a damper on all the speculation that the 7,1 could have a short lifespan in lieu of ARM coming."

Lifespan in fact may be short.
Modifies Blade Runner
Cop: "So they built in a fail-safe device"
Dekard: "Which is what ?"
Cop: "4 month lifespan"

If the people in the target market are willing to pay the price, who are you to say it’s overpriced? Apple’s killing it, selling 300+ million devices a year. That’s not because customers find Apple’s products overpriced, it’s because they find Apple’s prices good value for money.

Feel free to complain that product(s) are too expensive for you, but that’s a you problem, not an Apple problem. As long as Apple provides it’s actual customers (as opposed to many MR forum complainers) with products they value, Apple can continue charging prices that reflect that value.

If you don’t want to pay Apple’s prices, feel free to buy something else 🤷‍♂️

PS How much do you think Newegg would have to charge for that 1TB SSD if they had to cover $1.5 billion a month in R&D expenses?
