The Vision Pro headset that Apple announced today will have a unique biometric authentication method, employing iris scanning for the first time. Optic ID uses cameras in the headset to scan the eye, much like Face ID scans the face.

It is, in fact, almost identical to Face ID, but it uses the unique layout of a person's iris to verify identity.

Optic ID can be used to unlock the headset, authorize purchases, and unlock passwords, much like Face ID and Touch ID. Optic ID data is encrypted, stays on device, and is stored in the Secture Enclave processor so it can never be accessed by Apple or third-party developers.

The headset has numerous privacy features in addition to Optic ID. There is a visual indicator when the on-device camera is being used to record 3D video, and all eye input is isolated so apps and websites aren't able to determine where you're looking. Camera data is processed at the system level, so apps also aren't able to see your surroundings from the multitude of cameras.

The fruits of this labor will not be seen till next year on how all what they showed today translates to real world usage. Also, that price! eek.

So is this Wi-Fi only, or will it support 5G?
I mean....lol. When are you going to use 5G? During the 2 hours it can be used away from the wall? Does this look like something you're going to take outside? There wasn't even a single clip of a person using it outdoors in the entire keynote.

Hopefully Settings in visionOS will afford configuring multiple users accounts (like in macOS - and tragically missing from iPadOS) so that when [say] another family member puts on Vision Pro, they are greeted with their own user-specific settings and experiences base don Optic ID. That would be cool.

I do wish iPadOS offered multi-user accounts. But I get it - they want to sell everyone their own iPad.

Perhaps the least surprising thing about it. But it will be nice to just put it on and instantly authenticate.

No way it has any kind of cellular capabilities, 5G, 4G, SIM slot, e-SIM, or any of that when it has 2 hours of run time in the portable mode, running on the battery pack.

This is the first iteration of something very cutting edge that they've simultaneously tried to make portable and sleek at the same time.

It incorporates nearly every kind of sensor and chip from the entire range of Apple products and some blindingly bright displays inside.

For now. But augmented reality would be incredibly useful while driving. Not wearing these of course. But there's only one more major new product Apple has been rumored to be working on...
For now, indeed.

AR could will definitely prove super beneficial for driving. It's no real stretch of the imagination to see where Vision Pro could be a precursor to something like Windshield Pro (goofy name intended to illustrated the obvious use-case) on an Apple EV. ;)

I know the internet is melting from the vOne announcement. But if you push the Apple marketing speak aside, it's a fascinating vision about where personal computing is headed. Laptops? Pfft. Feels like their most ambitious endeavor to date. I'm all for it.
